IJF COACHING ACADEMY

We are incredibly proud of coach Craig Arundel who is taking part in the IJF Academy Undergraduate Certificate as Judo Instructor course this week at the British Judo Centre of Excellence in Walsall.

Leading the practical course are former international judoka Tina Trstenjak, Olympic, World and European champion, and DANIELA KRUKOWER, World and Pan American champion. They are working under the guidance of Daniel Lascau, IJF Academy Sports Director and 1991 World champion.

The IJF Academy qualification is an internationally recognised higher education qualification and is mandatory for coaches working matside on the IJF World Tour.

Before attending this intensive practical week, Craig completed 18 weeks of online learning and assessments. The practical sessions have continued to challenge every participant, helping them develop their technical knowledge, delivery and understanding within a positive, high quality learning environment.

Craig’s final technical examinations take place tomorrow. We are extremely proud of the commitment he has shown and wish him the very best of luck!

Scott’s Journey

A Commonwealth Games bronze medal, and a lifetime in sport, where swimming, rugby and judo were part and parcel of each day.

Born into a family of judoka, it seemed inevitable that this would be the route Scott would follow.

🔗 Read the full story of his journey here 👇

Scott has been doing judo his whole life. Having a world champion (Loretta) as a mum and a dad (Billy, also his personal coach) who competed across the world and coached athletes at six Olympic Games, there wasn’t much choice. It’s in his blood. Scott’s judo journey has seen him become two-tim...

MARK McCRAW
6TH DAN 🥋

Tonight was a special occasion as EdinburghJudo member Mark McCraw was presented with his 6th Dan by Richard Kenney, 8th Dan, OBE.

Mark started his judo journey at The Edinburgh Club 50 years ago, when he was just eight years old, coached by George Kerr OBE, 10th Dan.

Mark competed at every Scottish and British Championships from 1985 to 2002, with one of the highlights being winning the Scottish Championships in 1994. He went on to win medals at the Combined Services and Royal Navy Championships.

After 50 years in the sport, Mark thoroughly deserves the prestigious grade of 6th Dan, which means he can now wear the coveted red and white belt.

A huge congratulations to Mark from everyone at EdinburghJudo! 👏🥋

Behind every multi‑sport event is a dedicated team of volunteers who keep everything running smoothly for athletes, coaches, team staff, and spectators. At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Karen and Kirsty were part of an exceptional group of volunteers whose hard work and enthusiasm helped make the judo competition at the SEC Centre such a success.

14 years after at winning a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Karen was on the other side of the tatami as part of the Field of Play team, ensuring athletes and medallists got to where they needed to be in time with strict broadcasting schedules.

Kirsty was matside as an IJF CARE System Camera Operator, capturing all the action on video as it happened to aid the referee's decision-making, and improve the fairness of matches. A great experience that will add to her growing skillset within her own refereeing journey.

By volunteering in these roles, Karen and Kirsty embodied the spirit of judo and the importance of giving back to the sport, all while gaining new experiences and lifelong memories - great work!
