Itās the first Monday of January, everyone has recovered from their hangovers (just about) and today is the day to officially start your New Years resolutions, so a lot of people will be starting their fitness journey today.
If you are one of these people, Iām proud of you. The decision to make health and fitness a priority is possibly the best decision you will ever make, and prioritising yourself and your health is something that you will never regret.
With that in mind, here are some of my best pieces of advice if you are starting your fitness journey today :
- Donāt be worried about knowing everything straight away. For a lot of people the gym can feel like an intimidating place because it seems like everybody knows exactly what theyāre doing - I can promise you thatās not the case! I have been a qualified PT for 2 years and Iām still learning new things now! Take some time to get used to the gym environment, be patient with yourself and learn as you go.
- Be realistic with yourself and what you can change. The whole ānew year, new meā idea takes everyone by storm at New Year, but is changing your entire diet and lifestyle straight away really sustainable for you? Consistency is what brings results, but if you are trying to change too much at once and putting too much pressure on yourself thereās a high chance you will get overwhelmed and give up. Start with small changes that can fit into your current lifestyle, do these consistently and keep building from there.
- Enjoy the process! Changes donāt happen overnight, it takes time, so you want to enjoy the journey along the way! Donāt force yourself to do an hour on the treadmill if you hate it, go for a long walk instead or take a class. If cutting out your favourite foods will make you miserable, find a way to work it into your plan and still reach your calorie goal. Eat foods you like, move your body in a way that you enjoy and youāll be able to sustain these changes because you actually enjoy them!
Good luck on starting your fitness journey today! I hope this advice helped, if you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments or give me a message, Iām happy to help!
