Is balance affecting your athletes’ strength gains?

If your athlete can’t balance on one leg they are going to really struggle with a lot of exercises in the gym.

The intensity of their training will be limited.

How does this happen?

1️⃣Athletes might not have a stable foot on the ground so are not using the ground efficiently.
2️⃣Athletes may be creating a very rigid foot and lower leg with other muscles than having to provide stability. This then prevents these muscles from working as the prime movers during the exercise.

You may suggest holding onto something while they perform an exercise to help them balance and then train with a higher load.

But keep in mind that this will not help their balance, and once removed the athlete may not be able to perform the same movement with good technique.

Do you assess in all planes of movement?

We move in 3 planes along 3 axes.
⬇️⬇️⬇️
The Sagittal, frontal, and transverse.

This is from the side, from the front/back, and from above/below (ie. birdseye view).

It’s easy to get stuck only looking from one perspective, but you may be missing a big part of the picture with your client!

Example:

A deadlift is primarily a sagittal plane movement, meaning the biggest movements are in the sagittal plane (ie. Hip and knee flexion). However, it is important to ensure movement in the frontal and transverse planes are also efficient to maximise performance and reduce risk of injury (ie. Knees in line with shoe laces).

Is your client experiencing pain?

It might be from a movement happening in a plane of movement you are not looking at 👀

Where are your knees and feet pointing in a squat?

Here we are looking at the frontal plane.

The knees should track in line with the feet and point in the same direction.

Look at your shoelaces 👀

Are your knees staying over your shoelaces? ✅

Most commonly athletes fall inwards (knee valgus) which can indicate weakness of the glutes, your stance being too wide, too much hyperextension of the lumbar spine, or a lack of ankle mobility. This could lead to injury.

However pushing your knees outwards is also not optimal as it will reduce the glute muscles’ activity as they are not in optimal position for contraction.

Principles of rehab vs principles of movement.

These look pretty similar right? 🤔

These pyramids both highlight the importance of fundamental movement skills - THE BASIS OF EVERYTHING.

You must also earn the right to progress. You can only start to incorporate the next step on the pyramid once you have mastered the steps before it 🤸🏼‍♀️

It’s not about moving from one step to the next. It’s about building.

We teach you what to look for and build confidence with the first and most important part of either pyramid!

Movement is a skill.

Often it is assumed that athletes should naturally be able to perform these skills.

This includes basic skills such as Jumping, running, squatting.

But these should be taught with the same emphasis on skilled practice as how to hit a tennis forehand, kick a rugby ball, or shoot a basketball are.

Focussing on the skilled practice and not just on weight and reps could be the difference between performance progress, plateau, and injury!

The number 1 thing you are probably not focusing on in your training.

Not what exercises you are performing.
Not how often you are performing them.

But HOW you are performing them.

Movement forms the bottom of the pyramid of performance.

Do you really focus on it enough?

Want to get a first hand view of what we are about… for free??

Check out our previous online workshops 🤩

Over the 3 challenge videos we explain the importance of the neglected, but crucial, concepts you need to know about and teach you a few of the corrective exercises associated with them.

This will enable you to understand why you may not be making those PB’s, keep picking up injuries, and not reaching your full potential in your sport!

In the running masterclass we take you through the basics of running biomechanics and how this relates to performance and injury!

As always our information gives tips and exercises you will then be able to immediately incorporate into your training programs and your sport so you can feel the difference for yourself and/or your clients.
