Just reposting this as a reminder. Thanks to those that have signed up already. The first newsletter is in the works, and should be dropping around the 15th of September.

Hey everyone!

It’s Darbs here with some exciting news in that we are now in a position to launch Two Lions BC as a fundraising entity for UBBC.
Similar to the concept that other Universities have in place, the most notable being Blue Star at Newcastle, the aim is to have former members of UBBC set up a standing order of around £5 per month (approx. £1/week) which then builds up a fundraising pot.
This money is not for the day-to-day running of the club, so won’t be used for things like buying washers, nuts and bolts, or replacing shoes in boats at the Res, but is there for the club to tap into to support with larger purchases - for example if UBBC wanted to buy a new boat, the UBBC committee could apply to have money they have raised themselves matched by Two Lions to fund this. We would also look to make certain other purchases to raise the profile of the club, the first of which would be a branded gazebo which would give UBBC a significantly larger visual presence at BUCS and Nat Schools, and this could also be part of a student-alumni meet up at Henley Royal Regatta as other Universities currently do. We would love to have raised enough for this gazebo to be on display at BUCS Regatta 2022.
Unlike the club’s usual budget, the Two Lions fund does not need to be spent down to zero each year, in fact we think much the opposite. We would love to grow the amount in the fund to the point where we could help buy a new boat for the club every couple of years, which would then allow for a regular trickle-down effect through the club to help improve the standard of the boats at the Reservoir over time.

Being a donor to the Two Lions fund will gain you a membership number, instructions of how to set up your standing order, add you to our mailing list to receive the quarterly newsletter and invitations to alumni events, but is not designed to be an active rowing membership (you would still be allowed to row as part of Two Lions at selected events, for example the Pimms Party alumni-student races, and possibly a Henley Royal crew may be constructed if suitable athletes were available). If enough people wished to row regularly for Two Lions BC (i.e. as your primary club), this is something the Two Lions committee could begin to discuss with UBBC, but plans for this are not currently close to being realised and would need to take into account the priority of use of boats for the student club for the majority of the year.

If you are keen to become a donor, all you need to do initially is to fill in this form: https://forms.gle/oi5trycPkA9ceDa56 and I will get back to you with the details of how to set up your standing order and what your membership number is. In September, the first Two Lions news letter will come out, and then expect to receive the subsequent editions in December, March and June. If at any point you wish to end or suspend your standing order, just let us know.
This idea is something that has been spoken about for so very long, and it’s great that the journey has finally begun! I hope that you’re keen to be a part of it.

Hi guys, George here for a Summer update!

We've been back training for 6 weeks now and we've had a real mixture of venues, only just coming back into Slater Hall after erging on the Bournbrook Hockey Pitches while indoor sport was banned. It's been really great to be back at Worcester consistently for the seniors, and this will hopefully materialise with some strong performances at the Metropolitan Regatta 5th and 6th June for our top women's 8+ and men's 4- and the other 7(!) UBBC boats racing over the 2 days. If anyone in here is racing or finds themselves at Met please ping me a message and feel free to come over and say hi! We're also planning on racing some top crews at Marlow Regatta 19th June, before our final activity of the year at BUCS Regatta 24th-26th June and Henley Women's Regatta the week after. Some coaching from alum Benjamin James before he deploys to the gulf has been incredibly useful in such a difficult year, so our thanks must go to him.

We've had a fantastic uptake of novices in a "learn-to-row" style course where we had over 100 students want to take part, possibly a new club record? Regardless, the wind at the res plus exams has meant slightly slower progress than hoped but with the weeks now becoming more Summery I think they could have a real treat at BUCS Regatta and hopefully even come away with a medal! Before then, we have a private match in the works with Bristol Uni, and many of you will be happy to know that the wintech 8+ Chris Berry has finally fulfilled it's intended purpose and is safely at the Res alongside the Resolute 8+.

Obviously socials are a bit difficult currently, but we're hoping to host some alumni/student racing in late September where it would be great to see as many people as possible - details TBC. While Henley Royal Regatta is in an awkward time which means it is likely that we can't field a boat for it, we will definitely be hosting something on the bank so keep your eyes open for that.

I will be taking on the humble role of Boathouse Manager/coach next academic year as I start pulling the strings behind the scenes as the Guild's Sports Officer, as our incoming President Beth Sinnott will take over shortly, but please do come and say hi if you're around at Met/Marlow/BUCS/HWR, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible!

Hi all, George (president) here. Was hoping to make a newsletter including the results from Fours Head and the British Rowing Sprint Festival, but since both were cancelled and we're now in lockdown, I thought I'd give a quick update of how the year has started for the club:

Starting off, it's clear we have a really strong crop of seniors this year, as a combination of experienced freshers and a lot of keen returners from last years novice squads put the club in a good position with plenty of squad depth. We also have 3 senior men gunning for GB Trials (2 open, 1 lwt), 1 senior man and woman each on the Performance Talent Pathway, a beginner woman working with World Class Start at Agecroft RC, and 1 senior woman being accepted onto the GB Paralympic Development Programme! The river has been kind to us, and we haven't had any flooding yet (praying that we don't have a repeat of last year...), and we've been mostly doing fours and quads, staying away from eights for the time being. Things started off rusty with most people not being on the water since April, but we're back to form now. Boats damaged from the flooding in February are also trickling back over the next few months, and the infamous new boat racking in Worcester is genuinely looking realistic this year.

The novices this year didn't have an in-person sports fair, so the ones we have are keen and despite the changes really throw themselves into training and club life where possible. This year we have switched to a focus on sculling to start with, as this was more realistic with bubbles and COVID measures, and only this week we had our first swimmers in singles. They've also been benefitting from a new 4x+ at the res bought from Monmouth RC, and a spending plan has been drawn up for a number of long-overdue QOL improvements at the res.

UBSport have facilitated our indoor training well, and despite a limited number of bookings (and no S&C) the standard of training has been good, and the COVID measures the club has in place seem to work as there hasn't been any inter-club transmission. Most importantly, people are enjoying the training, and it's something to look forward to as there haven't been any sports nights or fabs. We've only had the 1 club social, at Norton's Irish Bar in Digbeth, which went exactly as you would expect with a large group of socially-starved seniors (low thresholds), but another rare opportunity to integrate the club gone well.

The club was looking forward to racing the Fours Head and the Sprint Festival before their cancellation, with the next event provisionally being Bristol Uni Head in January/February. However, with lockdown 2 in place, we're in 4 weeks of home training before being allowed back out, so just hoping to maintain momentum where we've been fortunate to make gains where other clubs haven't been able to. Less of a performance aim, more just making sure members are engaged and enjoying training. Overall it's been a great start to the year given the circumstances, and the club spirits are surprisingly high!

As always, if you have any other questions about how the club is getting on, contact a committee member, or want to get involved yourself, just ping a message my way :)

Hi all, this is something which may be of more interest to some older alumni, but recently Barrie Burke contacted the club to share some interesting media of his time as coach between 2001 and 2003, where he was a coach and helped to acquire the Worcester boathouse from the R.N.I.B New College, now New College Worcester. Barrie also coached the 2018 West Midlands High Performance 8+ with Tania Griffin to 44th at HORR.

He's provided many pictures (https://universitybirminghamrowing.com/2020/07/21/archive-barrie-burke/) of all aspects of club life, and more notably videos of most races between 2001 and 2003, and hours of training footage from the reservoir and on camp in Brive-la-Gaillarde. The videos can all be found on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCr1834zgA5QjK9v7cR-W1-Q)

While you're there, check out the still-incomplete playlists with videos of the club from various years, such as racing, training, promo videos and more (still yet to go through the huge Unirowing library, plenty on there also).

Hi all. We're currently sprucing up the website and have added an Alumni section! This includes a Google form which would be great to share with anybody who doesn't have Facebook/isn't on the page, so they can be contacted.
It also now has both a Committee Archive and a Racing Archive!
The Committee Archive goes back to around 1999 accurately (I hope) and the Racing Archive is a bit hit-and miss but has most major events covered back until 2001. Would be V useful if any of you with a particularly good memory could contribute towards any missing gaps.

Have fun digging up some old memories!

Hi all, I'm George the current UBBC president. This page has seen some inactivity lately, so a little update on the club.

2018/19 was a great season, with really high membership numbers and some great results including 97th for the senior men at HORR (who just missed on Temple qualification), the women qualifying for HWR once again, and the beginner women making the A-Final in beginner 8’s at BUCS Regatta (B finals for both beginner men's and women's quads). The club also purchased a Filippi 8+ to be shared between the senior squads, all handled wonderfully by president Andrew Gregory.

This year has been effectively non-existent due to a combination of flooding and COVID19. A good senior intake and a very strong beginner intake was marred by some bad flooding in November which hurt the training, but as always we still managed to win some gold at Bristol Head and BUCS Indoors. Then in January and February a second round of flooding hit, this time more severely, (I’m sure many of you saw the news and pictures of the boathouse practically underwater) as the river broke the all-time record. There was some damages to the boats and launch, but nothing extreme. The Severn was swollen for over a month, leaving only a couple of weeks before the Tideway races, so the senior women went to train in London and the senior men went to Nottingham. A certain virus then raised its head, and the red flag cancellation of WEHORR was followed by the cancellation of HORR a week later, and the rest of the season soon followed due to coronavirus.

Currently though, the club is still in good spirits, with both training and social events continuing as best they can! Two Lions BC is returning to form, and while a planned Pimm’s Party and alumni racing is looking like it won’t be happening in September due to social distancing, hopefully a return to Worcester can be enjoyed by students and alumni together. There's also plenty of alumni involvement planned for this year for those interested, including naming some boats, talk of an alumni category at a planned Varsity match versus Warwick in February, and there may even be a formal dinner to get the dust off those blazers.

If you’ve got any more questions about the club currently or want to get involved, feel free to ping me a message or email!
