Grass is always a difficult one!

Many of us will be noticing just how quickly our pastures are growing , and some of us may also be noticing the ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ต๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐.๐ด
From expanding waistlines to thickened crests, this time of year is a really tricky time for those of us with ๐ด๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ-๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐.๐
Between the 22nd and 29th of May, growth increased by a massive ๐ญ๐ต%! All that in ๐ท๐๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐! ๐ฎ๐ฑ
Whilst this growth is an average over the whole country, all regions appear to be doing ๐ฒ๐
๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐น, with the ๐ก๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ต ๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฌ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ topping the leaderboard in England. ๐
Between intermittent showers, warm weather and prolonged sunlight, you can see why most farmers hold off cutting their hay this early.๐ ๐
When we consider our horses, we must remember that ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ ๐ด๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป ๐ถ๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐น (and often inevitable) at this time of year. However, a lot of our horses cannot afford or tolerate significant weight gains- especially those that are ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ.๐โ
It pays to know what ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป your horse ended winter with, and establish how many KGs you have in the bag to gain. For many, sadly, the answer would have been a big, fat ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ.โ
If you are currently ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ถ๐, watch out for ๐ฎ๐ป๐ of these signs:
๐ฆถFootsoreness
๐ฅHeat (in any amount of feet)
๐ซ Flexibility/softness in soles of the foot
๐Swelling above / around the eyes
โ๏ธShifting of weight from one foot to another
๐ด Lethargy
๐ฉบPulses
๐ฑFirmness in the neck
And ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป with one of these methods:
๐ Movie to a grass free area (especially if they are metabolically compromised or heavily conditioned)
๐ฑ Invest in a grazing muzzle
๐ค Decrease the area of grazing
If you are unsure if your horse has laminitis or if your horse is reluctant to move, always ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐. ๐๐ฉโโ๏ธ
I truly understand how daunting this time of year is, I weighed my girls today and both of them are ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ than they were in June 2025. I have a plan in place, (which I will share in an upcoming post๐), but it is ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ผ๐๐ด๐ต out there at the minute. Laminitis cases are rising โฌ๏ธ
