Eastbourne Rowing Club

Eastbourne Rowing Club Established in 1860, ERC is one of the oldest coastal rowing clubs in the UK. We are a coastal rowing club open to complete beginners to experienced rowers.

Summer training is held at the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00pm. Throughout the year we train on Sundays either at the club or at the Wallers Haven river near Pevensey. In the summer we race across the south coast against other coastal clubs. We race over a 2000 meter course with a turn half way. Come on down if you want to try a new sport in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, or if you want to get back into an old loved sport. All are welcome!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ivor Lloyd, President of Eastbourne Rowing Club. He passed away yesterday (26th August 2026) after a short illness. Ivor was a great friend, mentor and inspiration of Colin Guppy and the club for the past 45 years. Colin was able to be with him through his last few days where he remained tough, determined and full of love. Ivor had time for everyone if you made yourself available and if you had aspirations he would always help, support, advise and contribute towards your goals. Colin for one would not have gone on to race for Leander Club without him opening up an entry pathway which would lead me to greater prospects later in life.

Colin got to train and race with him for many years both on the sea and on the river and have many tails of long cold nights, warm summers, victories and losses and saw his unflinching dedication to preparation, boat craft and racing skills. He was the same in his life outside rowing. These memories will stay with us forever.

A little bit of Ivor's past that some of you may not be aware of. Ivor started rowing at Eastbourne College where he won the the M4+ national Schools title. He joined Eastbourne Rowing Club in the late 60's reaching the height of winning JS4+ south coast championships and Senior Sculling Championship. He also held the world record for sculling the English Channel. Although he lived in Reading he would travel down on regatta days and race and was a constant at the club from the 60's to today. He held Eastbourne Rowing Club dear in his heart and was offering advice and direction right up to the last few weeks.

His accomplishments away from Eastbourne were many. He represented Great Britain at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in the M4X. In mid 80's through to the 2000's he was a large integral part of the team that steered and propelled Leander Club to massive success where he held the Captaincy, Director of Rowing and Chairman for in excess of 30 years. He was instrumental in bringing Jurgen Grobler to the UK in the early 90's who steered the Redgrave/Pinsent ere to World and Olympic success. He was the General Manager of Dorney Lake which was where he delivered the site as the rowing/canoeing/kayaking venue for 2012 Olympic Games.

There will be more to come in due course on arrangements. In the meantime sending all our love and condolences to the family.
