🚨🚨🚨 MOORGATE FOLD 🚨🚨🚨

Less than 24 hours after Walshy’s shock announcement, AFC Moorgate have decided to call it a day and close the club down with immediate effect.

It’s a massive shame but with lots of work needing to be done behind the scenes and nobody to fill the shoes of the main man Leigh Walsh, the lads had an open discussion and decided it best to retire the club for now.

A lot of the lads are looking for new clubs to join, some have made switches already and Walshy is sanctioning all the moves to enable everyone to continue playing there football asap.

Moorgate closes its doors for now but the history remains and will never die ⚽️

📣 📣 📣 BIG NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT 📣 📣 📣

Following his unsuccessful application for the Notts Forest head coach role, Walsh slammed his players for not bringing anywhere silverware to the club which has ultimately cost him his next big move.

All jokes aside, due to a recent illness which hasn’t cleared up and 9 long years in the Moorgate dugout, Leigh has decided to prioritise himself and his health and step down from management with immediate effect.

In a statement to the players, he expressed his gratitude to the lads for there hard work, loyalty and dedication but has decided that approaching 40 it’s time to take a back seat and let somebody else take over the day to day running’s of the club.

The club would like to thank Walshy for all the amazing work he’s done and he will be leaving Moorgate in an unrecognisable state compared to the one in which he took it over.

Moorgate are on the hunt for a new Manager, if you are interested in the role, please contact this page or speak directly to Leigh, the season has started so the club are looking to act fast to keep things going.

Once again Walshy, thanks mate.

Division One Result:

Morton 1 - 1 AFC Moorgate

Goalscorer:
Callum Wilson ⚽️

Man of the Match:🏆
Scott Harrison - special mention for this award as came on at half time and was extremely solid at the heart of the defence, well in Scotty!

Moorgate travelled across to Gainsborough this morning to take on a much changed Morton side since our pre-season friendly a few weeks ago.

A 15 man squad travelled and everyone got at least 40 minutes under there belts which should stand us in good stead as the season unfolds.

Moorgate were the better side for the majority of the first half & were somewhat unfortunate to not be ahead, but 0-0 the game remained. The second half Morton came out the blocks quicker and disrupted Moorgates rhythm and after a long throw in wasn’t dealt with, the ball fell to the Morton striker who lashed it home.

All the substitutions were introduced and this gave the lads a bit of a lift, Moorgate drawing level on the 70th minute after a small mixup at the back allowed Callum Wilson the chance to head the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper.

Both sides huffed and puffed for a winner but the final ball just wasn’t good enough and 1-1 was the final result, definitely a fair result on the balance of play.

Thanks to Morton for the hospitality, one of the best grass pitches we will likely play on all season and a good set of lads.

All the best for the season 👍

Pre-season Friendly Result:

Babworth Rovers 1 - 3 AFC Moorgate

Goalscorers:
Callum Wilson ⚽️⚽️
Ryan Brown ⚽️

Moorgate travelled to Babworth this morning for there last friendly before the real action gets underway in two weeks time.

Manager Walshy was awarded the luxury of another 18 man squad which was great for everyone to get minutes in the legs.

Babworth put up a very good battle with plenty of resistance, younger fresher legs made things difficult for Moorgate at times and despite Moorgate having the better of the opportunities in the first half, the game remained 0-0.

The same 11 took to the field but it was Babworth who got there noses in front, a mix up at the back allowed the pacey striker to nip the ball around Millsy and a simple tap in into an empty net made the game 1-0 to the hosts.

Moorgate were awarded what appeared to be a soft penalty but the clinical Callum Wilson stepped up and tucked it away to level the game. Wilson quickly doubled his tally after a fumble from the Babworth keeper allowed him the simplest of tap ins, 1-2.

By this stage of the game, all seven substitutions had been introduced and it was youngster Birkan who cleverly found Ryan Brown on the edge of the box who danced past the defender and neatly tucked it away to take the game away from Babworth.

3-1 would be the final result and a great bounce back from Fridays poor performance.

Thanks to Babworth for the hospitality, the Ship for the food afterwards, good luck for the season lads.

Pre-season Friendly Result:

Retford FC Vets 5 - 2 AFC Moorgate

Goalscorers:
Callum Wilson
Ashley Squance

Moorgate made the short trip across town to take on the Vets in the 2nd renewal of the annual pre season fixture.

Moorgate started the brighter of the two sides and found themselves 1-0 in front, courtesy of the tenacious Callum Wilson.

The Vets grew into the game and after some poor tracking from the Moorgate boys, a gifted goal saw the game levelled up.

The vets really grew into the game and finished the half well, the evergreen Gaz Davies with some smart play saw a deflected effort find its way past Ben Mills in the Moorgate goal to give Vets a 2-1 advantage heading into the second half.

The Vets dominated the second half, extending there lead to 5-1 before a consolation headed finish from new signing Ash Squance saw Moorgate finish on the end of a 5-2 defeat.

Manager Leigh Walsh understandably disappointed with the lads after a very lacklustre performance, one which hasn’t reflected the first few pre season games that’s been played.

A quick turnaround sees the lads take on Babworth Rovers this Sunday in a game which they hope to put things right.

Thanks as always to Retford FC for their wonderful hospitality, the vets for turning out a very good side and giving the Moorgate lads a great test again. We look forward to returning next year, hopefully a better result awaits.

FULL TIME: Veterans 5-2 AFC Moorgate

Pre-Season Friendly Result:

Morton FC 0 - 2 AFC Moorgate

Goalscorers:
Josh Thursby ⚽️
Sam Lewis ⚽️

The Moorgate boys returned to winning ways away at Morton yesterday, running out 2 nil winners with a good solid performance.

Goals from Josh Thursby & new signing Sam Lewis were enough to see the lads over the line, plenty more minutes in the tank for the majority of the squad as manager Walshy had 18 players to pick from again.

It was great to see the team keep a clean sheet after some poor uncharacteristic defending last week led to the guys shipping 3x goals. Credit to the Moorgate boys for putting that behind them and keeping the game nice and tight.

Keep tuned on the page as we have news about our next fixture just around the corner.

Pre-Season Friendly Result:

Albertos FC 3 - 3 AFC Moorgate

Goalscorers:
Ben Smith ⚽️
Callum Wilson ⚽️
Lewis Vardy ⚽️

Moorgate made the short trip across to Worksop to take on Retford foes and newly formed Albertos, with some familiar faces on show.
Extremely warm conditions and a tricky, firm pitch made playing free flowing football tough at times but Albertos made a better fist of it than Moorgate and deservedly went into an early 1-0 lead.

A head injury to the brave Aidy Rea midway through the first half allowed Walshy to gather the troops and he made a triple substitution which was seen to good effect, Ben Smith coming off the bench and after a good team move Ryan Brown released Ben through the lines who was able to chip the oncoming goalkeeper, 1-1.

Moorgate were having there best spell of the game and marksman Callum Wilson took his chances from 20 yards out which saw his strike squirm under the keeper and put Moorgate ahead. The lead didn’t last long though as some clumsy defending saw Albertos awarded a penalty. Keeper Ben Mills saved the penalty but Alberto’s reacted faster and managed to turn the rebound in to square the game at 2-2 heading into half time.

The second period saw the game return to a scrappy affair and it was Albertos who looked the more likely to go on and win the game, deservedly taking the lead with a well worked goal. Despite Moorgate looking tired the lads huffed and puffed and managed to get back into the game with a goal direct from a corner from skipper Lewis Vardy, emulating Crossy for the visitors who had opened the scoring with a very similar goal.

3-3 would be the final result, the match was settled via a penalty shootout which saw Moorgate run out 4-3 winners on the day.

Thanks to Albertos for there hospitality afterwards, the pub putting on some lovely food and the lads having a beer with friends, new & old.

All the best to Alberto’s for the season, we look forward to doing battle when the real stuff begins!

Pre-Season Friendly Result:

East Markham 2 - 3 AFC Moorgate

Lewis Vardy ⚽️⚽️
Alex Wonham ⚽️

The Moorgate boys dusted the boots off for the first Gainsborough summer series fixture of the season.

They made the short trip across to old foes and friends East Markham, the score ended 3-2 in favour of Moorgate.

There were some good performances on show, skipper Lewis Vardy the standout player on the day, with 2 goals and an assist for Alex Wonham, one of Vardy’s goals a classy header from a corner.

Speaking of performances, goalkeeper Lewis Rockley added to his list of howlers in the sticks, conceding direct from a corner, a moment to forget for the Moorgate man.

All in all, great to get some minutes in the legs, gaffer Leigh Walsh pleased with some of what he saw and plenty to improve on.

Next up sees the lads take on newly formed Alberto’s FC this Sunday, a few faces returning to the Moorgate team sheet aswell should bolster the squad nicely.
