❤️ CARDIO AFTER 40 — YES, YOU NEED IT… BUT DON’T LET IT REPLACE YOUR STRENGTH TRAINING 💪
When women come to me wanting to get fitter, lose body fat and improve their health after 40, one of the biggest questions is:
“How much cardio should I be doing?”
My answer?
👉 Cardio absolutely has a place. But it shouldn’t come at the expense of resistance training.
As we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, maintaining muscle, strength and bone density becomes increasingly important.
Resistance training helps us:
🏋️ Maintain and build lean muscle
🦴 Support strong bones
🔥 Improve body composition
💪 Maintain strength and physical independence
📈 Support metabolic health
❤️ Improve insulin sensitivity
But that doesn’t mean cardio gets thrown out of the window!
Cardiovascular fitness matters enormously too. A stronger heart and lungs mean better stamina, improved work capacity, easier everyday movement and, importantly, better long-term cardiovascular health.
So where does cardio fit?
I like to use it alongside strength training — not instead of it.
And one option I love is interval training.
Today, mine was sprint intervals. 🏃♀️💨
Rather than spending forever doing steady-state cardio, intervals alternate short periods of harder work with periods of recovery.
Done appropriately, interval training can:
❤️ Challenge and improve cardiovascular fitness
🫁 Improve aerobic capacity
⏱️ Give you a very effective workout in less time
🔥 Increase overall energy expenditure
💪 Improve your ability to recover between harder efforts
🏃 Help maintain speed, power and athletic capacity as we age
And there's something else I love about sprint intervals…
They remind you that being over 40 doesn't mean you have to stop training like an athlete.
You simply need to train intelligently, recover properly and choose the right amount and intensity for your body and fitness level.
And no — you absolutely don't have to sprint! Intervals can be performed on a bike, rower, cross trainer, incline treadmill or even through faster walking intervals.
The goal after 40 isn't to spend hours trying to burn off calories with cardio.
It's to build a body that's strong, fit, capable and resilient.
🏋️ Resistance training builds the strength and muscle.
❤️ Cardio builds the engine.
You need both.
If you're a woman over 40 and you're confused about how to combine strength training, cardio and nutrition to get results without running yourself into the ground, DM me “STRONG AFTER 40” and let's have a chat about how I can help you. 💪❤️
