The Royal Tennis Court's Spring Pennant Final on Saturday night saw table-topping Team 2 (comprising Mark Sherwin, Daniel Whitehead and George Beglan) take on Team 5 (Jerry Mumford, James McNeilly and Peta Louise Jeffery) after Team 5 narrowly edged out Team 4 (Paul Newton, Graham Davidson and Henry Pearson-Miles) in the semi-final (reversing the “regular season” result).

In the first string singles tie, Mark set an ominous tone vs Jerry in dominating with his relentlessly accurate bobble serve, winning 6-0 and not conceding a chase until leading 40-15 in the sixth and final game. The second string pairing was a more balanced affair in which James pulled out a 4-2 lead before being overhauled by Dan in a series of tight games to give Team 2 a second win by 6-4. The final single match again saw a win for Team 2 as George beat Peta 6-2 in what, in fact, felt like a very tight match, especially in the early games.

Team 5 needed to sweep the doubles comprehensively and won the first fixture 6-5, but split the remaining doubles evenly with a 6-2 result each way, thus handing the imaginary pennant (but very real victors’ glassware) to Team 2. Mark Sherwin’s two match wins and an aggregate game score of 17-8 guaranteed him the MVP award on the night.

The match was played in the very best spirit of Pennant tennis, with wonderful banter and great friendship continuing into the evening over a delicious meal paired with an exceptional bottle of Margaux kindly brought along by James and generously shared with all. Thank you to all of the pros for your work in putting this together and to Les in particular for taking such good care of the teams on the night. Good luck to the Summer teams!

Last Sunday, 10th May, was a truly special day for the RTC.

Over 60 guests came together for a moving and joyful Celebration of Life & Youth, making it a memorable occasion for everyone involved.

It was a wonderful example of members making full use of the club’s facilities, gathering not just to enjoy the day, but to share in something meaningful and uplifting. The event honoured the memory of Ivan Ronaldson and his significant contribution to Real Tennis and the junior game, and it did so in a way that felt both positive and heartfelt—bringing long-standing and newer members together in a shared spirit of appreciation.

The occasion also featured an exciting exhibition doubles match between the RTC professionals and leading club members, adding plenty of energy and entertainment to the day. Meanwhile, the courts were open for children to come along, try their hand at the game, and enjoy learning from the pros—an inspiring highlight for the next generation.

Thanks to everyone’s generosity and support, over £1,200 was raised for the RTC Junior Fund.

A particularly touching moment was the planting of a cherry tree in Ivan’s memory within the RTC gardens—a lasting tribute that will continue to grow with time.

Lesley, Chris, Ben, and Luke Ronaldson have expressed their sincere thanks to all who contributed to the day and helped make it so special.

✨ Royal Patronage of the Royal Tennis Court – A Proud Heritage

Royal Patronage of our Club dates back to 9 July 1903, when Edward VII accepted an invitation from Club President Sir Spencer Ponsonby-Fane to become Royal Patron.

A passionate supporter, the King often recalled first learning to play Real Tennis at Hampton Court when he was Prince of Wales. Although he no longer played by the time he became Patron, he famously continued his support by paying five times the Club’s annual subscription.

He was succeeded by his son, George V, who continued the tradition after ascending the throne in 1910. Also a keen Real Tennis player in his younger years, George V frequently played at Hampton Court and maintained his father’s generous support—except during the war years.

In 1936, following George V’s death, his eldest son briefly became Edward VIII, continuing the Patronage until his abdication later that year. The role then passed to his brother, George VI, who upheld the Royal connection despite not being a Real Tennis player himself, though he remained a devoted sportsman.

In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II graciously continued the Club’s Royal Patronage upon her accession to the throne.

A highlight of this enduring relationship came in 1980, when Her Majesty and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, attended a special reception marking 450 years of tennis at Hampton Court Palace. The Royal Party watched an exhibition match, met players and members, toured the Palace, and even signed framed portraits that still hang in the Club today. The visit was later featured in the BBC’s Royal Heritage series.

In 2025 His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO graciously accepted our invitation to be the Patron of the Royal Tennis Court. The Duke of Edinburgh has long been a keen player of Real Tennis and has graced our court on many occasions, most recently attending the Champions Trophy Finals.

A remarkable legacy of tradition, sport, and Royal connection spanning more than a century. 👑🎾
