"Friday nights under the lights"

Claremont's second Div cup group game saw them welcome Gartcairn to Ballerup on a clear Friday night.

The first half of the match was fierce with both teams going at each other and Claremont's Finn Fraser & Alistair McKenna having an excellent battle with Gartcairn's no. 4 in the middle of the park, there wasn't too much goalmouth action in the first half except an excellent swerving Paul McGovern shot from range smashing off of the Gartcairn post.

As the floodlights lit up for the second half, so did Claremont, first up it was a bit of individual brilliance as Paul McGovern beat the Gartcairn keeper with an outrageous effort from 25 yards out which fired straight into the top corner.

5 minutes later and an excellent Lewis Simpson free kick landed perfectly at the feet of summer signing Brooklyn Russell who made no mistake with a powerful effort at the near post to get his first official Claremont goal.

Shortly after Claremont were in again after excellent work in the midfield put McGovern through with the Gartcairn keeper wiping him out for a penalty. McGovern dusted himself down and coolly slotted home Claremont's third.

Claremont rounded off the scoring with good play from Alfie MacLeod releasing Aiden Paterson who's through ball saw Brooklyn Russell in a 50/50 with the Gartcairn keeper, Russell won the challenge and coolly slotted home from 18 yards to finish off the match as a contest.

Claremont had a few gilt edged chances to further the scoring with good work from Charlie Brannagan putting him one on one with the keeper but the scoring remained 4-0.

Picking a man of the match for this one was a nightmare for the coaches as 6 or 7 of the boys could easily have scooped the award but the rear guard's excellent work and clean sheet won in the end with Lewis Simpson getting the accolade on this occasion for a stellar performance.

The boys now travel down to Dumfries to meet Heston Rovers next Saturday morning.

Claremont opened the season with a home match against Scotland Boys Club and came flying out the traps early on, dominating the early stages of the match which compounded with an exquisite Finn Fraser through ball setting Paul McGovern clear of the Scotland defence who made no mistake when slotting home a composed finish across the goalkeeper.

Scotland came back into the match when a deep over hit cross evaded everyone and ended up in the Claremont net.

Claremont were still reeling from conceding the first and weren't switched on when a low cross found a Scotland player in the Claremont box who's shot somehow trickled into the far post. 1-2 at the break.

Claremont conceded a penalty early in the second half which took the game to 1-3 and a change of shape and personnel saw Claremont come back to life.

Claremont took control of the game and had Scotland on the back foot for the remainder of the match, Lewis Simpson was felled in the box after another wave of Claremont attacks and Paul McGovern stepped up to coolly slot home the resulting penalty.

Into the dying embers of the match and Claremont were throwing everything at the Scotland goal and the equaliser duly arrived in the last minute when a late corner caused confusion in the Scotland ranks and Charlie Brannagan was there to slot home.

A 3-3 draw to start off the group phase of the Divisional Cup and the boys march on to a home tie against Gartcairn next week.

⚽️ Memorial Match for Alan Paterson ⚽️

We’re putting on a memorial football match to remember our mate Alan Paterson – a top guy, a proper football man, and someone who meant a lot to so many of us.

📍 Showpark, East Kilbride
🗓 Sunday 14th September 2025
🕐 Kick-Off at 1PM

It’ll be a chance for everyone to come together, share some memories, and celebrate Alan’s life the way he would’ve wanted – with a game of football and a good crowd around the pitch.
