There is something really enjoyable about melting wax and soaking chains in it to give the best possible wear protection. The chains go really stiff and you get covered in the stuff but picking it off like it’s an old scab is so satisfying. Now I just have to make a crunchy chain smooth and everyone’s a winner! Even in pellet form it’s satisfying!

It’s come to that time again where we need to sell our hire bikes. These Trek Marlin 5s are the best hire bikes we have ever had. Hydraulic brakes, internal cables and fantastic fun geometry with bulletproof spec. They have all had frame protection tape and most have had chainstay protectors too so all are in excellent condition/ they are being prepped over the next couple of weeks and orders can be taken from this Wednesday. Bikes will be £275 each.

Some jobs just become a labour of love, sometimes because of the object involved and sometimes it’s the story behind the job. In this case it was both. Chris came to us with a very poor condition 1984 Raleigh Burner asking if we could do anything with it. It was his childhood bike which held great sentimental value to him and he wanted to pass it onto his son.

The frame was very rusty and pitted with a fair few frame holes. The rest of the components were poor but some salvageable. What should have taken a relatively short period of time took longer than expected due to several suppliers going out of business along the way due to horrible Financial Times. We got there in the end

This was not about getting a period correct bike to its original spec, it was about bringing it up to date and giving it a new personality and upping the cool factor for its new owner. Needless to say he was very pleased as were we.

Ever had your brakes catching your rotor and wonder why. It can be a few things like bits of dirt and grit sitting in between the housing and piston which in this case caused the piston to wear and catch on the inside of the shaft causing the discolouration you see here. For this customer it meant that the rotor was being solidly clamped by the pads. This caused damage to the inner and outer of the piston. We replaced two pistons and cleaned up the housing and it’s now like new. Customer gets to go and enjoy Wales this weekend now.

Well someone’s bike is about to get a ‘glow up’ in gold. Always a pretty upgrade but also highly functional as the gold colour is in fact a Titanium Nitride coating and prolongs the life of the metal acting as a barrier. Win win.
