BUILD YOUR OWN RUNNING STRENGTH SESSION

If you run for general health and fitness or for a performance goal we know there can be major benefits to including strength training in your weekly programme. But knowing what strength exercises to do can sometimes be difficult. Follow the structure below to put together your own running strength session:

1- Step Up Variation (e.g. Weighted step-ups)

2- Single-Leg Squat Variation (e.g. Split Squats)

3- Calf Raise Variation (e.g. Soleus Calf Raise)

4- Core Exercise (e.g. Deadbugs)

5- Full Body Exercise (e.g. Weighted carries)

Try to pick as many single-leg exercises as possible and your on to a winner. Remember if you are training for strength lift heavier with lower reps.

As our feet and hips work so closely together we have to think about the way our knees can be affected by this interaction. A common phrase to describe this is- 'our knees are at the mercy of our feet and hips'.

Often when we have knee pain or a knee injury it can be easy to focus on our knees but more often than not what our feet and/or hips are doing can tell us a lot about what is going on at our knees.

HIPS AND FEET

Despite your hips and feet not being very close to one another they actually work together in order for effective movement. This means that our foot movement and function is a result of our hip movement and function and vice versa. Therefore, if our hips or feet have limited function the other will be affected.

This is one of the reasons we can't just look at one area of the body, we have to understand how your body is moving as a whole.

When starting training it is tempting to jump right in and do one of two things: go full speed at the hardest thing we can find OR be demotivated by not being able to do the hardest thing we can find. Both of these approaches often end in the same way- demotivation.

But getting fitter, faster, stronger relies on you having build really good foundations. This means that you are able to learn how to do the harder things in your training because you are able to nail the foundations.

We know consistency is the key, pretty much regardless of your training goal so make your training consistent right from the start.

ENDURANCE & FLEXIBILITY

The more flexible we are the better, right?

This may not be the case if you are focused on you endurance performance.

Endurance performance is all about efficiency- using the least amount of energy to do the work. Increasing efficiency means we are able to go further, at a higher intensity using less energy.

This means that being really flexible isn't necessarily beneficial, because the more flexible you are the more potential for movement there is and with more movement brings more energy usage.

If you are an endurance athlete have a more focused approach to your flexibility and mobility rather than just being as flexible as possible. This may mean that you never really need to "stretch" or it could mean your flexibility work should be targeted to benefit you.
