Happy Summer Solstice and International Yoga Day✨️🧘🏼‍♀️

The sun is shining here today on the Solstice, marking the longest day of the year when the sun reaches its highest point, and we are gifted the most hours of daylight ☀️ We can mark this day by honouring the light; outside us, and the one we nurture within! It’s a beautiful reminder to pause, soften and slow down, and to reconnect with the parts of us that crave warmth, space, and stillness.
Yoga has been such a supportive part of my own personal journey...helping me return
to myself again and again when I felt disconnected, and now as I continue to move through different seasons of life with more compassion.
Your yoga practice isn’t about how strong you can be or the shapes you make - it’s about coming home to yourself; to your breath, your body, and your truth. So today, take a moment to pause, to realign, and to celebrate all you have achieved this year so far! Get outside in the sunlight if you can and connect to nature, and if you feel called to, take a moment for yourself🧘🏼‍♀️

Because it starts with awareness, not your ability to perfect a pose! Let me explain....

"Atha Yogānuśāsanam"

The very first word from the Yoga Sutras is "atha" or 'now' "Now the instruction of yoga begins" Not when we are able to perfect a pose, not when life slows down and when we have more time. It begins now, in this moment, in the messiness of normal life. Yoga begins in the present when we decide to show up just as we are; perfectly imperfect, and meet ourselves where we are in this very moment. It begins when we decide to pause, when we start to notice our breath, and when we keep coming back to our mat again and again without preconceived ideas or expectations. This is yoga - the ultimate practice of presence✨️

In a month focused on love, start with yourself... Show up for yourself with the same kindness and compassion that you do for others. Notice the ways you talk to yourself, the inner dialogue that runs through your head each day. Is it kind? We can not speak to others with kindness if we can not speak kindly to ourselves. We can not love others if we are unwilling to love ourselves first. We can not show up for others if we cannot show up for ourselves first. Lead by example, be the change you wish to see. The most radical thing thing you can do is keep your heart soft and open in a modern world that encourages us to harden and close. So let me know what you can do to be kinder to yourself today? Sometimes you won’t feel like practicing, that's normal. This is when I remind myself that yoga ‘off the mat’ counts too; it’s not always about moving your body or meditating. It’s about how you move through your day and how you treat yourself and others.
Sometimes I unroll my mat and don’t know what to do or where to begin; sometimes, I simply sit and breathe for 5 minutes because I know that’s enough.
Sometimes I move when I don’t want to simply because I know it’ll shift my energy when I need to.
Sometimes I’ve taught classes utterly exhausted, but given my students 100% of what I do have, because I know they need it too.
Sometimes I still get nervous teaching, and remembering things gets harder as I get older. Then I remind myself I’m human and give myself the compassion I deserve. That, too, is yoga. Sometimes practice feels easy, and sometimes, it doesn’t.
Sometimes I’ve felt frustrated with my body for its limitations, but then I remind myself of what it can do and how amazing it is.
Yoga isn’t solely about movement or flexibility. It’s not about how it looks, it’s about how it feels.
It’s about how you live in the world.
It’s about the breath that anchors you when you feel unsteady in the chaos of life. The moments when you choose yourself again and again even when you don’t want to. The moments when you decide to be a little more kinder to yourself and others around you.
This is why I teach because the message is so much bigger than the pose alone. I want you to know I might be a teacher, but I’m forever a student too, and I’m walking this path alongside you 🤎
