Great night for Earlston Junior Tennis. The final of the 1st Division on a sunny evening at the club. A brilliant advert for Junior club league tennis, this match had it all. Earlston unable to field a couple of regular 1st team players had to dig deep into the playing pool and came up with a wee gem. Emily Freitakas 11yr old who had never played a 1st Division match before never mind playing in the final, had the battle of her life vs Innerleithen number 4 Archie. She came through a tough encounter where both players had the momentum on several occasions to notch up her first win and what a time to do it. Then the doubles 1 vs 1 in what I can only describe as one of if not the best junior doubles match I’ve witnessed in my 45 years as a coach. All players having moments of brilliance with eventual winner’s Benjamin and Mathew squeezing past a very strong Aaron and Ruby 10-8 in the MTB to notch up win number 2. Next up Johnny vs Jamie and what another epic battle with Johnny managing to navigate his way back from a set down to win in another MTB. Ruby MacKenzie played a superb match vs Mathew Raffier and almost pulled off a remarkable win using all of her skill to outwit her frustrated opponent after going down a set. Mathew however dug deep into his physic to find a way to combat Rubys relentless effort and won in another MTB . That win gave Earlston the result and with the time at 21.38pm we decided to play the last two matches as one set with both going all the way again. Benjamin narrowly winning vs Aaron in a MTB and Johnny with the wee dynamo Emily winning in another MTB 11-9 against Jamie and Archie. For those of us who were able to watch this match we all left with a warm fuzzy feeling that junior tennis here in the Borders is in good shape and the future is exciting. Congratulations to Innerleithen getting to the final and there is no doubt that they left feeling they did the best they can and could have quite easily have made it a different result but, it was Earlston Tennis Clubs night and now we look to the other teams to fight out the last few fixtures in the other divisions. Mention to the coaches who prepare these players for such moments and the parents who support their players driving , feeding and putting up with the moans and groans. Also to Johnny Adamson who in the background runs the leagues and was thier to support everyone last night . For me this is why this sport helps mould not just good tennis players but amazing people. The number of times people say to me how wonderful the Border players are not just as juniors but also when they begin thier journeys in life ! Love Tennis
Big mention to Aiden, Harris , Seth, Ryan who have all helped the 1st team this season and we can get a larger photo once all of the matches are done !
