The wreck of the famous US submarine USS Harder has finally been found after lying unseen on the seabed for over 80 years.
She sits more than 3,000 feet down off Luzon, upright on her keel and remarkably intact, surrounded by coral and deep-sea life.
A large hole just behind the conning tower shows where Japanese depth charges struck during her last fight in 1944.
Commissioned in 1942, Harder became one of the most successful Gato-class boats of the Pacific War, sinking five Japanese destroyers in only five patrols under Commander Samuel Dealey ... later awarded the Medal of Honor.
On 24 August 1944 she was lost with all 79 men aboard after a brutal counter-attack. Now she lies silent on the ocean floor, both a relic of the war and a memorial to the crew who served under her defiant motto, “Hit ’Em Harder.”
