Durham University Scuba Diving Society

Durham University Scuba Diving Society We are the diving society for Durham Uni. We run trips and PADI courses, so post any questions on the wall or send us a message if you want any details.

You can also email us at [email protected] Durham University Scuba Diving Society (DUSDS) is Durham University’s diving club. As one of the more unusual clubs, DUSDS allows you to experience a whole new world underwater. Whether you are an avid diver or have never taken that first cold clear breath underwater, the club can accommodate you. DUSDS has partnered with Durham City Scuba (DCS) a

nd events are run by qualified divers and instructors whose passion leads them to continue diving - even when they should be working! Founded in 2003, DUSDS has introduced many people to diving over the years, with a long-standing reputation for being a reliable and cheap way for students to learn diving. We offer PADI courses taught by our own instructors and in co-ordination with DCS. We make trips throughout the academic year to a variety of dive sites, capturing the best of North Eastern and Scottish diving. Highlights include the Farne Islands with its playful seals and St Abbs stunning nature reserve, as well as many more. We have our own equipment maintained to current safety standards for qualified divers to rent out for their own personal dive trips. DUSDS has a small and loving exec look after you: Jonathan Travers is the President; Saniya Saraf is the Treasurer; Charlotte Hunter is Secretary. When we are not underwater, we are probably at the bar and have socials a few times per term, reminiscing and regaling each other with our diving stories. Regardless of whether you have dived before, everyone is welcome! If you want more information, please drop the page a dm or come along to one our socials; we’d love to see you there. Hi everyone we’ve been getting a fair few questions about joining the society as a beginner so I just wanted to try to clear up a few things! If you’re already a certified diver then you can ignore this!

To be able to dive with us we need you to have at least completed the PADI Open Water course (or equivalent from another agency) which is the entry level course. This is from a safety point of view so we know you are safe and comfortable in the water!

We do all of our courses through Durham Scuba Centre so if you would like to learn to dive then we can get that sorted for you!

After the Open Water course there is a central progression of courses, namely Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver and Divemaster that you can take to further your dive education. There are also speciality courses that you can take for more specific aspects of diving. I’ve attached a diagram from PADI to help explain the course progression!

If you want to dive in the UK with us we recommend that you dive in a drysuit although it is possible to dive in a wetsuit for some of the warmer months. For that we would need you to complete the dry suit speciality course (again this is from a safety point of view).

I hope that’s helped!

Hi everyone I hope you’ve all had a good summer and welcome to all of our new members!

It’s that time of year when everything gets up and running again so I would like to clear up a few things!

First of all I’d like to point your attention to the fresher’s fair. We will be attending the fair with a stall on Tuesday 28th. We are yet to find out exactly where in Maiden Castle we’ll be set up but we will definitely be there. Please come and find us and speak to us in person about the society! We would love to see you.

In terms of regular days out diving we are looking to gauge interest over the coming weeks and then move forward with that. We are currently discussing the possibility of a separate page / group chat purely for those looking to dive in the UK regularly.

We currently have no trips abroad planned due to changing and variable covid restrictions but that is something we are looking to change very soon!

For those that don’t know we also arrange diving courses through Durham Scuba Centre. We are currently compiling the list of prices for each course and I will put that in a separate post as soon as possible.

As always if you have any questions feel free to comment or message the page directly and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!

Sorry that was a long one,
Jonathan 🐠🤿

Hi everyone, I hope your exams have all gone well!

We’re just in the process of changing the exec team over for this year and planning to get you all back in the water soon.

If you were down to come diving with us on Sunday to do a course please could you message this page so we can get that sorted out.

Cheers,
Jonathan 🤿
