Dambusters Sailing Club

Dambusters Sailing Club Alumni Association for Durham University Sailing Club- Durham Ancient Mariners Bring Ultimate Satisf

The Dambusters are an informal group which exists to link together anyone who has an association with sailing at Durham University. The group has fairly humble origins and was formed by a few friends looking for an excuse to head to the pub more often almost a decade ago but has now grown to encompass a wide selection of past members, friends and sailors and even graduates from other Universities

from all periods of the clubs history. The group has no membership fee or costs and is organised by the consensus of anyone willing to get involved with volunteer administrative help provided by a recent graduate or current student. There are two main aims of this friends group:

To provide a means for members of the group to keep in touch and sail together regularly. To help with the continuing development of Durham University Sailing Club. More information on how to get involved with the group can be found on the pages of this website and if it isn’t covered here then please email the friends secretary and they will be able to answer your query. As part of the Friends Group development we have been looking at the history of the club. A potted history can be found on this section of the site as well as our Past Exec list, recognising past members of the club who have put in the work to make things happen along with a list of Awards. These articles are constantly being updated and corrected so if you have something to add or update please let us know.

Dambuster drinks - 19th November
Join us for a drink with the students at RTYC - we would love to see you!
Where: Royal Thames Yacht Club (60 Knightsbridge, London, SW1X 7LF)
When: from 6pm

As the seasons start to close in we thought this would be a great chance for us Dambusters to fight against the nights closing in and meet for a drink. As an added bonus the current DUSC students seem to share this view and so are keen to come along too. With that in mind we have organised some drinks at Royal Thames Yacht Club on Friday 19th November after work and would love for you to join us. This should be a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends and hopefully make some new ones in the current DUSC community.

We will send a reminder nearer the time, but put it in the diary and we look forward to seeing you there. If there are any problems or you have an questions, let us know at [email protected].

Many thanks,

Edward Fox
Durham University Sailing Club Alumni Secretary

With the mailing list refreshed we've sent out an update on how DUSC has been getting on recently - https://mailchi.mp/6f68530dce33/news-from-dusc?e=897a2aeb46.

Before lockdown there were some good team racing results, including in time honoured fashion the 3rds beating the seconds, BUSC points in fleet racing and a 100% win rate in yachting.

The club is also starting fundraising for a new fleet of fireflies. Below is a picture of our first fleet of fireflies (the club owned individual fireflies for fleet racing from time to time decades ago) bought second hand from Edinburgh in 2006. At the time the Flintstones Laser 2s were not in a good way, mainly being held together with some gaffer tape and bits of filler, so a great fundraising effort from everyone in the club and the Dambusters found us the money to buy them and move from South Shields to Derwent.

We'd like to stay in touch! Don't miss out on receiving the latest Dambuster news, events and invitations.

Whether it has been lockdown, too much time at home or the lack of sailing, 2020 has certainly been an interesting year so far. The DUSC Alumni committee are taking the opportunity to reconnect with all of our email subscribers. After a period of radio silence (sorry about that!) we are excited to rekindle our community and events (when possible) which made being a member of the Dambuster community so enjoyable.

Before we can do that we need to make sure you want to stay connected with us. In order to stay subscribed please click the link below and fill out the form:

Many thanks and look forward to speaking again soon,

Dear Dambusters,
Unfortunately due to the current coronavirus situation the team racing event we were attending in Sevenoaks has been cancelled. Therefore, it is not economical or advised to travel to London this weekend to meet in RTYC. Apologies the plans have not come together this time, but we will certainly reschedule on another occasion.
Many thanks

Dear Dambusters,
As some of you may be aware we as students are aiming to strengthen connections with the alumni community. Many of our exec members and first team sailors will be in RTYC in the evening of the 13th of March. We would very much like to meet as many of you as possible to chat face to face and discuss future plans for both clubs over a beer.
Thanks and hope to see you there!

Not sure if any of the current students are in here at present but if so please know we’re thinking of you and send you our heartfelt best wishes at what must be a really difficult time.

Cracking weekend at the Tankbuster! The sun shone brightly, as did the crews! The students won the weekend overall with the Dambusters close behind in 4th out of 17. Both crews have qualified for the Sunsail Regatta Finals in November. It was also the first outing of the who enjoyed some cruising. Best of luck to the students during BUCS Yachting this week!

Durham win Sunsail Race Series 3 with the Dambusters close behind in 4th.

This coming Saturday (12th Nov) the Dambusters will be participating in the Sunsail Series Grand Finals after securing a place at the Tankbuster earlier this year. Unfortunately not all of the crew who qualified the team are able to attend and we're a couple short. If you're keen and available to join the crew then please get in touch on here or with David Miller directly.

This is a one day event and the charter is free! Plan is to arrive at Port Solent on Friday night / early Saturday morning to be off the dock by 0830. Racing will be 3-4 fleet races around the cans and we should be back on the dock around 1600. In the evening you may depart or join the rest of the crew for dinner in Port Solent - accommodation is available on board.
