Weekly Roundup - Michaelmas No1 (-13th October)
Welcome back to weekly roundups! After a wonderful freshers’ fair, showcasing more sports and societies than ever before, it looks like we are in for a fantastic year of John’s sport. It has been a slightly staggered return to matches as most sports have to wait till next weekend (and a few are still looking forward to finding out their fixtures). However, there are a few clubs that have already got their campaigns underway.
Football, aided by a great signup of freshers, had a fantastic start to the season as the Bs and Cs had their first fixtures. The Bs took on Castle B and had a close match coming away with the win 1-0 after Antoine found the back of the net. The Cs faced off with Aidan’s C and cruised along to a 5-2 win with goals coming from Jonas Jacobsen, Joe Simmons, Henry Wyness, Adam and Jasa.
The boat club, aided by a freshly refurbished boathouse, have had a productive start to the year. After a preseason over a couple of weeks before term, they took the trip down to Stockton for Tees Small Boats Head. A men’s 4+ took to the water in the afternoon and despite having some equipment issues that ultimately prevented them from challenging for the win, provided a promising start for the year. Andrew Hambling also had his first race in the 1x in the morning. The following week they made the journey up to Newcastle for Tyne Small Boats Head again with a men’s 4+. With an almost entirely different lineup, they had a good race, particularly against Castle, battling away on the 4km course. It has also been great to see the start of their novice training get underway.
While ultimate frisbee don’t start their league games for another few weeks, it has become a tradition for a John’s team to play a Cranmer Hall team in a friendly match. There were some great performances from several players new to the sport and it turned out to be a very closely fought contest with John’s coming away with the win 5-4.
Next week brings the start of the season for the majority of the rest of the teams, make sure to get involved as we look to build on this fantastic start.
