🦴 YOUR SPINE IS STRONG — AND IT WAS MADE TO MOVE.
We often talk about the spine as though it is fragile.
“Protect your back.”
“Don’t bend like that.”
“Be careful.”
“Keep your spine straight.”
But your spine isn’t a delicate structure that needs to be kept still.
It is strong, adaptable and designed for movement.
Your spine can flex, extend, rotate and side-bend — movements we use every single day when we reach, turn, get dressed, pick something up from the floor or simply look behind us.
And as we get older, continuing to MOVE matters.
Regular physical activity can help us maintain: • muscle and bone strength
• balance and coordination
• physical function
• confidence in movement
• our ability to continue doing everyday tasks independently
The World Health Organization specifically recommends strength and balance-focused activity as we age because of its role in maintaining physical function and reducing falls.
And this is one of the reasons we love mat Pilates.
We explore movement in different directions. We flex. We extend. We rotate. We side bend. We stabilise. We strengthen.
We're not simply trying to make your spine more “flexible” — we're helping your body develop the strength, control and confidence to move through the ranges available to you.
Because ageing well isn't about avoiding movement.
It's about maintaining the capacity to move.
There will always be individual considerations — particularly with osteoporosis, previous spinal fractures, injury or certain medical conditions — and movements may need to be adapted.
But for most of us, the message shouldn't be:
❌ “Your back is fragile. Protect it.”
It should be:
✨ “Your body is capable. Let's keep it moving.”
Move well.
Move often.
Move with Purpose. 🌈
