Scottish Chess Tour

Another very busy junior (and senior!) club night, but Head Coach Christine is not resting on her laurels. Her new initiative is detailed on the poster. An afternoon chess jamboree for primary school children, with games, prizes, and a lot of fun chess, completely free. Just bring your kids along! It'll be a great afternoon, and we'd love you to come if you can. Entries, including names and ages, and inquiries should be sent to [email protected] by Wednesday 16th September. Hope to see you there 🤗

Some huge live news from Livingston. Our Player of the Year Ansh Bhakta has won the Livingston Allegro Intermediate event with a perfect 5/5! The latest in an extraordinary run of success since coming to the club. A marvelous end to a stellar season. Well done indeed Ansh!

Not only that, our star prodigy Magnus Kemp has taken clear 2nd place with 4½/5!

A fabulous result for both of them! Huge congratulations🤗

Also Steve Thomson who finished on 3/5, and Jonathan Kemp on 2/5. Ed Spencer was 9th in the Open with 3/5. You all did Dundee Chess Club proud again!

The Junior membership continues impressively, throughout the holidays, which even brought some record attendances. Swelled on Monday by some more new and keen arrivals.

Incidentally, the Kemps, Magnus and Jonathan may be pleased and surprised to learn that they finished joint top of the latest Friendly Allegro, despite only playing three of the four rounds! Their 3/3 could not be beaten by those who remained, and they take it on tie-break!

We said goodbye to Jan last night, likely for some time as he and his partner head off to new jobs and new lives in China.

A stalwart of both city clubs, and of course Dundee City for several years now, and a great friend and companion at the clubs and the many tournaments around Scotland.

He'll be much missed, but of course we wish him well. All the best me old China 🤗

Scottish Chess Tour
Adas collects his Silver Certificate from the Head Coach. Yet another initiative from the fabulous Christine, who has done so much for our thriving junior community. 10 questions/positions to solve on the board to reach Bronze, Silver and then Gold standard, by which time you'll be locked and loaded and ready for tournament play!

Get anything wrong, it's explained to you, and you try again next week. The sense of achievement in our youngsters is worth its weight in gold (pun intended!) Christine is also now enrolled by TAFCA to work her magic in a wider context. Utterly invaluable 🤗

Our AGM on Monday crowned the winners in our club tournaments. Many congrats to Magnus Kemp, Junior Champion, Aiden Reid 2nd, Harris Birkley 3rd, Club Champion (and President!) David Findlay, and Intermediate Champion Ansh Bhakta. The other picture is Christine's mammoth crosstable for the junior tournament! There's 46 players on there! Testament to Christine's incredible work with the kids. How lucky are we to have her?!

Another large crowd of juniors down last night, furiously attempting to finish their Junior Championship games before next week.

The first of likely a few reminders than next Monday will see our annual AGM, which happens every year. It's a chance for the members to have their say on what they like, don't like and want to happen at the club. We'd love to see as many as possible there, and parents of the juniors are very welcome - we want to know what you think and tell us how we should be running the show.

A few of us would also love to be kicked off the commitee and relieved of organisational duties! We're very much looking to younger club members to step up to ensure the future of the club, as several of us, erm, have our best days well behind us.

The club is having its golden years right now, and we want that to keep going. Please come along Monday 29th June 7.30 at the club.

The first of what will hopefully be regular Junior Friendly matches took place at the club, thanks to the organisation of Head Coach Christine. A team from schools clubs in Newport crossed the river to visit, resulting in 20+ (too busy to count properly!) players taking part. A hugely enjoyable experience resulted. Plenty of juice and sweets, as we all know how energy-sapping a good chess session can be! The intended format was to play two games each board, but as ever, some were finished quicker than others, resulting in re-pairing to keep everyone playing. The end result was a 29-12 win for the home side, but the real winner was junior chess here and hopefully beyond. Testament to the tremendous work being done by Christine over recent years.

Our grateful thanks to our friends from across the water, and parents and adults for making it happen. Hopefully a great time for all 🤗

This meant a rather curtailed Friendly Allegro for the adults later, the crosstable here.

Our thanks to new Head Arbiter Ana for running the show 🥰
