Our under 11s made their way down to Manchester for the National Championships this weekend.

The kids had a great time travelling away from home the night before and were excited to take the field.

It was the end of a long season, and this would be the toughest day of them all, however we finally had 3 of our strongest players together on the pitch for the first time this season, so we were hopeful for a good showing of what they can do.

Unfortunately we were without Lukas, Astrid, and Eden for this one, all players that have contributed to our U11s getting this far. Our newest player, Marshall has been committed to helping prepare his team mates over the last 6 weeks, but unfortunately missed out this time. We look forward to seeing him in action in the near future.

Being the 8th seed, we were drawn against the number one seed Northants Ducks Black.

The two teams agreed a truce beforehand in that the ducks would keep their quacking whistles quiet, meaning we would not need to annoy everyone with cowbells!

The ducks players were well organised but our defense started off calmly and were able to stop them on their first 3 downs. The breakthrough came from the ducks number 10 who managed to spin like a washing machine through to a first down and beyond for the score.

The ducks' defense held us to a stop before they managed a score again on their next drive, this time coming from their talented number 8 making a catch on the halfway line and making a weaving run across the pitch.

Their solid defense was making it extremely difficult to progress down the field, rarely missing tackles and batting down or catching anything remotely close, proving why they were the one seed.

Our longhorns persevered. Ridley and Buzz had been trying get clear of the defense with little success until finally Ridley created a touchdown by juking past several ducks from just past the halfway line.

This was followed up shortly after by a safety from Harris which was helped by an excellent blitz from Charlie.

Charlie made a brilliant catch and run to break through on a wheel route, but the Ducks closed the door again. Harris finally got loose down the Ducks sideline but unfortunately didn't make the first down.

Zoe was doing her bit on defense but just wasn't getting the ball on offense. We couldn't seem to get back into the game, and the loss put us into the Plate half of the bracket for the semi final.

We would need a win to be able to play a 3rd game of the day and not see it cut short.

The South Coast Spitfires were great in their first game, overcoming the Burnley Tornados, which meant that the Tornados (number two seed) would be our opposition in the next game.

The Tornado's side line was in full voice supporting, and their players were not making many errors at all. This felt like a tougher game than our first. Despite competing in the lower half of the final table, there was little drop off in the challenge presented. This just highlights the quality on display from across the country this weekend.

We mixed things up in an attempt to get going, Buzz taking a stint at QB to give Harris some relief, but still they were extremely hard to break down.

Ridley broke through twice and managed to take the ball to inside the 5 yard line, but their defense held strong.

There were some amazing tackles being made from the Tornados, and Buzz showcased what he could do with some outstanding tackles of his own, but there was seemingly no weak spot in the Tornado's armour.

Our player that stood out this game was Emily, the youngest, who showed a level head beyond her years by never once cracking under pressure, never giving up, and even clapping the Tornados after a terrific touchdown, showing truly what this game is all about. Her snapping was a reliable constant throughout.

The day was full of learning for all, and it was great to see so much variety of teams on display.

Congratulations to the Burnley Tornados for going on to win the Plate Final, and to the London Fruitbats Red for winning the U11 Final!

We look forward to the off season when we will regroup and train hard for the next outing.

Go Longhorns!!!

Season Summary

It’s been some time since our last update and this is a result of a huge spike of games as the first full year of regional qualifiers for the BAFA National Championships was organised.

Qualifying in Scotland ramped up from just 4 teams at 1 age group last year over 3 games, to 3 age groups:

U11: 5 teams, 8 games
U14: 6 teams, 10 games
U17: 6 teams, 10 games

This provided a huge task in terms or coaching and refereeing for each club taking part, and has been a massive learning experience for us.

There are so many highlights and ā€˜firsts’ for players in terms of touchdowns and debuts that it’s impossible to cram them into one post. Cody’s debut was only surpassed by Nate’s in terms of difficulty, but it was certainly a memorable one, coming against the Glasgow Hornets and managing to come away with a catch for 2XP, which is an amazing achievement for only a couple of weeks training! He would capitalise with a touchdown in the next game, which is outstanding.

Jamie made also made his debut this game, scoring twice in another strong performance. His memorable catch from a terrific ball over the top was a highlight against this formidable defense.

Last but not least, Ridley made his long awaited debut against the Bears in Glenrothes for our under 11s. Ridley scored both our touchdowns with weaving runs, and helped us in making a fantastic stop on defense, which proved to be critical.

U14s

Our under 14s competed in all 10 of their games and made great progress. All members of the squad made memorable contributions in what was a great test for the youngsters. Of all the games played there were numerous highlights, but it was the Glasgow Tigers and Dunfermline Kings that provided the closest games – and the Glasgow Hornets that provided the stiffest test.

As scheduling problems permeated these qualifiers from the outset, Our U14s found themselves playing the Hornets in back to back weeks, 6 games in to the tournament. At that point, both teams had won all their games and it would be a top of the table clash to see who would emerge as frontrunner. The incredible points differential of the Hornets going into the game indicated that we would be the underdog, and despite our best efforts, the Hornets proved to be performing to a higher level. We put up 26 points but the game got away from us and it became irretrievable.

We are so proud of our team for the performances they put in, and wish the Hornets the very best of luck as they progress to the Finals this weekend.

Notably, our backup QB, Wilson started and played the entire game in our last game of the season, it was a big day for him and was an excellent game to finish the schedule, managing to overcome the Paisley Bears hosted by Hamilton Buccaneers on a terrific day of sunshine and fun. This completed what was a tremendous effort by the whole team to finish 8-2-0 on the season.

U11s

Our under 11s had 8 games scheduled, and managed to play each team once before the second half of the season. Unfortunately, the second half of the season amounted to two forfeit wins and two forfeit losses. Having been unbeaten up to that point, and with 8 qualifying places across 22 teams, it was enough to keep them in second place and through to the National Championships with a wildcard spot. The Paisley Bears were a difficult opposition, and deserved to be champions in the end. We wish both teams the best of luck and look forward to seeing how they get on down in Manchester this coming weekend!

U17s

Our Under 17s were a similar story, with 8 games on the slate we were unfortunately unable to compete the second half of the season. The highlight for the season was a thrilling game against the Paisley Bears where we were a score behind with 5 seconds left. The last play was taken by Zain from our 5 yard line, who was able to cut down the pitch and into the end zone with no time left on the clock. Unfortunately the speedster had stepped onto the sideline just 10 yards out from scoring, but it was a dramatic end to a great game in what was our first ever game day at home, played at Thomson Park, the home of Lochee United!

It was great to add Nate to the team, our U17 Quarterback in time for our last outing, in which he showed great strength of character and threw for his first ever touchdown against a very well put together Glasgow Tigers. We are delighted with his progress in such a short time and look forward to seeing more of what this team is capable of in the near future. All the best of luck to the Fife Allstars, Hamilton Buccaneers and Dunfermline Kings who all progress to the National Championship in Manchester this Sunday!

It’s been a very busy couple of months for the Longhorns and we’re well overdue an update…

We had the SCOFF Winter League for our under 12s which was a day of pure joy watching their progress unfold. We welcomed exciting debuts from our newest players, Eden, Lukas and Emily. Wilson, Harris and Buzz continued to lead by example throughout a busy slate of 6 games. Eden scored several touchdowns both running and receiving, one of which was an amazing over the head catch; Emily made a great first down with her first ever run, and Lukas got himself onto the scoresheet with a terrific running play. It was a very tough day on defense, and Harris, Buzz and Lukas kept cool heads despite it being a difficult task. Wilson made some fantastic throws and showed true leadership with welcoming in the new players. Harris also stepped up admirably and showed maturity beyond his years in keeping composed under pressure, making tackles count on defense and also spreading the ball on offense. He even managed a rushing touchdown, juking around three players. Buzz worked his socks off on both offense and defense, and made some key gains and tackles throughout, including some touchdowns at pivotal moments. As you can imagine there was not a peep to be heard on the car ride home after such a tiring day! They had an absolute blast, and we look forward to seeing this age group grow and develop as time goes on.

SCOFF'S Winter League Game Day 2 for ages 16 and Under came around swiftly several weeks later, and this time it was the turn of Thomas and Kunjan for yet more Longhorns debuts. It couldn’t have come at a better time as we were missing some of our oldest players on what would be one of the toughest days we’ve had to date. Archie helped out tremendously to start the day on both offense and defense, working hard on the field for every play. Thomas also got stuck in and despite the tough circumstances, his attitude never faltered. Kunjan was equally brave putting himself out there making his contributions. Our more experienced players rallied, with Tyler, Lily, Cailean, and Bruce all working tirelessly on both offense and defense. Zain and Umar both caused havoc for the opposition with their electric speed, whilst Evie and Annalise were ever ready on offense and defense respectively. There were some memorable plays and scores for Tyler, Cailean, Harry, Zain and Umar, but these couldn’t offset a difficult task on defense. More game time was given to our developing players as the day went on and this should stand them in good stead for the final day’s games on 1st March.

The last shoutout for Winter League goes to our QB Charlie, who incredibly gave up his first interception as a Tayside Longhorn for 14U/16Us, after 15 games unblemished. A phenomenal achievement, and coming one game after his first sack. Well done Charlie, a truly incredible feat at any age, let alone 12!!

Last but not least, we had our long awaited series of friendlies with the Glasgow Tigers this weekend, with both the juniors and 14U teams in action. Our newest player, Charlie was to make his debut for the younglings, and he managed to secure a touchdown catch along with an extra point to mark the occasion, mixed in with some excellent tackles. There were some brilliant displays of athleticism yet again from Buzz and Eden, providing more scoring plays. Wilson was on good form throwing the ball, and Evie backed up as centre admirably throughout. The spoils were shared between the Tigers and Longhorns in two very closely contested games. The sides were very well matched and it was great to see them having some meaningful game time.

14Us followed suit with two more equally close matches. These games had some great end to end drives and we saw more progress being made from each player on the team. Lily made a terrific gain down the right hand side, evading a tackle with a spin move and was unfortunate to finally be tackled just short. She also managed a sack and some crucial tackles on defense throughout. Tyler put in an awesome display with several lethal catch and runs for a score, whilst Cailean was just as dangerous on both offense and defense. Thomas managed an interception, and his first large chunk play for a gain that was again halted short of the end zone by another fine Tigers tackle. Evie was crucial in winning us a first down, showing great concentration with an extraordinary catch taken out wide. Bruce got in on the action with his first receiving touchdown as a Longhorn. He was also pivotal on defense again and is becoming quite a leader. Umar, Cailean, Johnny and Lily all rotated as blitzers, putting in the effort to make the Tigers QB work extra hard. Johnny doing excellent work in the role on what was also his debut, being as tenacious as they come. Umar and Harry both made significant contributions on offense and defense, providing some exciting scores at key moments. Charlie was spreading the ball well all day, and worked us into position to tie the game after a final touchdown from Umar with seconds left. Unluckily, the resultant 2XP was not to be. We were able to share another win and a loss with the Tigers in these two very close games, but more important were the learning points we all took away. Well done to everybody who helped organise this, the Tigers coaching staff, including the referees Aiden and Campbell who gave up their time to officiate. Thank you to the parents and volunteers who helped provide pictures and footage for us, as well as getting the players there and back, it’s much appreciated and wouldn't be possible without you all. šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

WINTER LEAGUE GAME DAY 1

On Saturday, Longhorns travelled to Ravenscraig, Glasgow for Scottish Flag Football’s Winter League. This was expected to be a tough day for our team, given that most of our squad are either new to the game within the last three months, or at the very bottom of the age bracket. We would be playing against players aged 16 and under, using a pool of players 50% aged 12, with thankfully several older players up to 15.

Burnley Tornados

First up was what we expected to be the toughest matchup of the day. Burnley Tornados are an accomplished side, and were confident enough to make the trip from the North West. We would be providing newcomers Zain and Ian with their debuts in this game, these are our oldest players and bring a lot to the table in terms of Zain’s straight-line speed, and Ian’s outstanding receiving skills. We started strongly, but despite several tackles, one by Zain and then Ian twice at the goal line, the Tornados finally made the score on their first drive. Ian then picked off the two point attempt to make the stop. Both newcomers were playing confidently and with maturity. Zain and Ian combined on our first drive with Ian making a catch and run before being tackled virtually on the halfway line on 4th down. An encouraging start, as he would have been away for the score. The Tornados replied with another well worked touchdown, #11 being instrumental. Again, the extra point attempt was no good. Umar had some great efforts at gaining ground with a weaving run followed by a catch and run. We received some contact on the QB by the blitzer, but the penalty was offset by a player crossing the blitzer’s path and that took us to the half.

The second half started strongly for us, when on the 1st down, Cailean, another player making his debut, made a tremendous catch and run on the turn. He then sprinted the rest of the way with Tornados in chase for his first ever touchdown! What a moment, and it was thoroughly deserved! Cailean has improved tremendously over the last few months. Ian went on to convert the two points from a beautifully lobbed ball to the back left pylon. Back on defence, the ever ready and poised Tyler made a clutch tackle to stop a 1st down. Then on making the next play, our blitzer, Archie was impeded and we pushed them back to their half. The Tornados were clinical in their next play, notching another 6 points but again missed the conversion. Our next drive couldn’t get going despite good yards made by Zain. Charlie evaded yet another blitz to find Lily in the air, but there was too much ground to cover. The defender #58 was putting in some great work with tackling and blitzing. The Tornados had been hard to break down all game, but we were getting closer. Charlie produced some magic to avoid the blitz again twice, first finding Tyler and then Zane before finally finding Cailean on the halfway line, but his path was blocked. It was a shame but ultimately worked in our favour. This gave the ball back to the Tornados for one final play. Archie steamed in with his blitz and ended the game with a sack. This gained us 2pts and brought the scoreline up to 10-18, earning us our first point of the tournament for being within 8pts or less of the winner. Overall, an excellent result with some nerves involved, and a very tough game to start us off.
Tornados 🌪18 – 10 (1) 🐮Longhorns

Dunfermline Kings

This was our better matched game of the day in terms of age and experience. We gave Annalise and Rowan their debuts on the first drive. They took to it well, showing good movement and spacial awareness. Umar gained us a large chunk of yardage, before Cailean came close to another catch and run TD, tackled just short. We had agreed to provide some Grangemouth Colts players with some game day experience, since sadly they could not enter a team. Bruce and Joel showed their eagerness and no nerves at all when they went in on defence to great effect, tackling and blitzing respectively. Despite this, the Kings were able to work their way steadily down field, culminating in a neatly executed touchdown plus two points. On our next drive, Annalise made a great move to find herself open, but the pass evaded her. Zain took a short pass from our 5yd line and made a swift move out wide before turning on the afterburners right down the sideline and in for his first ever touchdown. It had been a long wait for him to be playing his first game day, and he'd finally sprinted in his first score. Well done Zain! Bruce, an incredibly strong and determined player, dug in with Charlie, Lily, and Ian to stop the next drive but the Kings would find a way to get right down to the five. A score was prevented at the end with a crucial interception from Charlie, and a touchback.

The second half started with the Kings on offense. Archie was back in on defence, this time with Jamie, but we couldn’t deny a second touchdown and 2pts after. On our next drive we mixed in some runs before finally finding Ian with a sumptuous ball over the top. The ball landed comfortably in his hands and he ran it in the rest of the way. This was another incredible first touchdown, and another for the highlight reel. It was a play that would open up the game completely. Ian, Charlie, Bruce, Harry, Umar and Zain all combined on defense to stop the next Kings drive. Jamie, Cailean, Lily, Zain and Ian all worked together on our next posession before Charlie spotted Ian making a run for it and launched the ball to pass over his intended path. Ian leapt expertly to pluck the ball down mid stride, completing a ridiculous catch under pressure from a very talented defender. He was able to stay on his feet and remain inbounds to take the ball in for the go ahead touchdown. Tyler came in to shore up the defense and make another stop before we were able to run one more play with time expiring. It was a well played game by both teams, and certainly one for the spectators. It was already a great start to the tournament on a difficult schedule of games.
Longhorns 🐮18 – 16 (1) šŸ‘‘Kings

Fife All Stars

After a long hiatus, next up was Fife, which was surreal, being made up of players recognized from Kings, Colts, Phoenix, and even a couple of ex-Longhorns. It was nice to see some familiar faces. Allstars were quick to score, which would become a pattern of play that was difficult to break down. On offense we would gain yards through some dynamic plays but it was a difficult task. Lily making what looked like a first down but this was not to be. This third game was by far our most physical game of the day, and the decisions seemed more contentious somehow. Our players kept their nerve, however, and whilst we couldn’t convert a score on offense, Ian stepped up on defense to burst into an intended pass and run home a memorable pick six to salvage some points. There were some excellent throws being made from All stars’ QB, and in particular their receiver 42 showed outstanding hands. We fielded Annalise, Joel, Jamie and Harry for some more game experience. Annalise showed great form and resilience in an effort to cover her assignments, but that was a tough ask on what was a bit of a mismatch. Joel was tenacious at the blitz and like a whippet tracking the QB. Jamie switched in to good effect, and showed laser focus in the task at hand. Harry joined in with Ian to make a stop on the last full drive before Umar zig zagged through to the halfway line, providing Charlie with one last long shot to Ian. The catch evaded him on this occasion, which was unfortunate. On the turnover, Joel completed the final tackle with a deft swipe as time expired. This was an interesting game, and one that provided vital experience. It was great to see some youngsters receiving some game experience for All Stars too.
All stars 🌠21 – 6 🐮Longhorns

Glasgow Tigers

After 5 hours and the game beginning after 8pm, this one was a tough ask. The Tigers had most energy of the two teams left to play last, and it was good experience for our side to dig deep and pull off some plays when energy levels were low. Rowan was starting in this game, having not seen the field since the Kings, and Annalise was back for some more much needed game time. We took a slow start and fed the ball to Lily who made an excellent catch, though it was too much to get the first down. Rowan was eagerly snapping the ball and was instrumental in providing more options to the team. Harry, who had been playing with strength and heart all day, paired up with Tyler to make a series of tackles, but the Tigers were able to show off some evasive maneuvers to balance themselves down the sideline and in for the score. Our QB made his first slip of the day, literally, resulting in a safety which gave the ball back to the Tigers. The Tigers number 8 was executing some of the best blitzes we’d been up against all day, and still had bundles of energy. The two defenses each came alive to exchange stops, followed by a narrowly missed interception by Zain. The players were exhausted, but there were some sparks of play on both sides, notably from a nicely thrown ball by the Tigers for a score, and almost another sack for our dynamo, Archie who had earlier earned us the sack we needed for a bonus point against the Tornados. Lily, who had been a pillar of strength all day, took an excellent catch and run, before Cailean was put in the mix and managed an equally good reception for a similar gain. Our strapping receiver had developed right in front of us today, in the same way Tyler had done previously. Unfortunately the well-organized Tigers always managed to close the door on us. The Tigers were able to convert a final score and PAT before the enthusiastic blitzer clattered into our QB, in what would be his last play of the day. The youngster had put in a fine performance against some class opposition. It was a solitary blip on what had otherwise been a free flowing game, and it was nice to see number 8 of the Tigers asking after Charlie during the next play. Bruce showed strength and energy as a replacement and immediately added an extra dimension. He spread the ball well, but again there was little left in the tank for some tired receivers, who were needing some pep. This took us to the final whistle and the end of a thrilling but exhausting day. We couldn’t wait to hit the road and start the 2hr trip home.
Longhorns 🐮0 – 21 (1) 🐯Tigers

This was a great start to the Winter League for us, and there were most definitely some learning points as always. Joel and Bruce from Grangemouth Colts were both an absolute delight, both on and off the field and all the kids had an absolute blast together. Thank you to all our parents and supporters who committed to helping out, those waiting patiently for us to get back, and for our Broncos friends who were backing us and providing help from the sideline, and certainly added to the atmosphere.

LONGHORNS FIRST HONOURS!

On Saturday we were delighted to receive Scottish Flag Football's Youth Team Development Award of 2024!!

This caps off an amazing first year for us and our team, and it means a lot to receive this recognition from SCOFF and our peers.

A massive THANK YOU to coach Gill who, as well as being a rock to lean on, has been the glue that holds everything together. Thank you also to the incredible parents who have stepped up to support and help out when we need you. There is no way we would be in the conversation without you all and everything you've done for us. Most of all, and you may think nothing of it, but you've provided some incredible words of encouragement at key moments that have given us the drive to keep on doing what we do.

The children have been at the heart of what we do, and to see them grow in confidence and skill the way they have, with so much fun involved is an absolute pleasure.

There's so much more to come from this group. GO LONGHORNS!! šŸˆšŸˆšŸˆšŸ®

2024 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

This Saturday, the Tayside Longhorns reached a new milestone of playing at the BAFA National Championships in Manchester. It’s been an eventful nine months in the club’s short history. We’ve been building to get to this point, but that hasn’t come without some snagging. Our fledgling team is led by experience, and our new recruits knew they were extremely fortunate to have earned the opportunity to be travelling down to participate against the Northants Ducks, South Coast Spitfires and Nuneaton Jaguars, in what would be a character forming experience for the group. It capped off a total of 11 competitive games in just 4 weeks for the club. Many of the players on our traveling team joining during the same period, and benefiting greatly from these fixtures. Our team is mostly made of 12s, at the lower end of this U14s age bracket.

Our team had a blast travelling down to a major Flag Football event, and it opened their eyes to just what is possible with some application and teamwork. We were delighted to be able to cheer on our fellow regional competitors, the U14s Glasgow Hornets, who are another exciting side with similarly exciting young prospects. We regretted that our U11s team were not able to earn a place in their bracket due to there not quite being enough appetite at that level for our regional qualifier. This should change in time as the sport gains more and more traction, so we are confident that they will have an opportunity in future.

Nuneaton Ducks

This game was a baptism of fire for three more members of our team making their debuts. The opposite sideline was intense, bringing fierce noise to this bright 9am start to the competition. It was perhaps no coincidence that their colours mirror the Seattle Seahawks as they did their best to emulate the 12th man of CenturyLink field. We have played against sidelines like this before, but none yet that were complete with novelty duck whistles! The tactics appeared to have an effect until Umar took the ball on a neat catch and run from our 10 yard line. He managed to ghost his way through the defense and streak down the Ducks sideline into the end zone. It was a welcome opening score for our team, and quickly brought some quiet to the field. Our defense held the ducks back with Evie taking charge of blitzing duties, until a well drilled play got the better of us. A catch to be proud of for a score in reply. Umar and Archie had further success on offense in the form of runs and receptions but the ducks defense solidified and made some key tackles.

Archie shone in this game with a more assertive performance than previous outings. He made an excellent reception up high but the ducks were so quick to pounce that it was hard to make yards after the catch. Their number 28 notably proving her worth on multiple drives. Josh contributed to the Longhorns defense in what was his first game, with some great blitzes after working hard on these in training. Josh did well to put the QB under pressure, who had some nifty moves of his own. Evie took turns in blitzing and had similar success to Josh with her added height proving difficult for the ducks playmaker. Tyler made his first interception in this, his very first game too. What a great time to manage that! There were a series of great tackles from Lily, Charlie, Harry and Archie before another score from the Ducks. Harry and Umar made a tremendous run each from deep in our half, but the Ducks ultimately managed the crucial tackle. We had some nice passages of play in response, involving Umar, Harry and Archie again, but the tall Ducks defense was able to make the stops required, and ultimately closed out a well deserved win for them. It was a difficult opener, which was exactly what we had been expecting.

South Coast Spitfires

This was the game we had been most excited about. The South Coast Spitfires are another well established team from England, but it wasn’t lost on us that this was two teams travelling a total of 1000km to play each other. Boasting 65 players, the club has made some significant achievements, and the team we were facing would be made up of players with multiple years experience, a national championship winner from last year’s tournament, and at least one rookie. Forgive the extended match report as this was our game of the day.

At the coin toss, we were wanting to choose the direction of play, but ended up defending first. We hoped this wouldn’t become a factor later on. The game started this time with us conceding first and having to chase the game. Nothing new to us, but it was a warning that any weaknesses would be exploited ruthlessly. We will be building some tackle drills around that play, having missed three tackles in quick succession. Perhaps it was the long interlude between games, but either way, it felt like a silly mistake to make so early on. Encouragingly, heads did not go down this time – a sign that perhaps our youngsters are learning the mental side of the game with all their recent game experience.

Umar and Archie worked well running the ball, and Harry provided receiver support, making a fantastic catch and run in what would be his most outstanding performance. He took the ball all the way to the one yard line but was judged to have gone out of bounds at the five. We were beginning to get going but the Spitfires managed to keep us out of the end zone. The Spitfires offense took charge again, this time their number 32 causing problems as she slalomed through their own half with some impressive tackle evasion. This spell was cut short by a brilliant interception from Lily, once again showing awareness beyond her years and taking it on a sweep down the opposite sideline into a great field position for the Longhorns. This drive was again short lived as Charlie worked hard against the blitz, but tight defensive cover proved too much to overcome and 4th down could only be thrown out of bounds. The Spitfires’ defense was a tough nut to crack. Lily made another good tackle, and Evie was back in at blitzing, making her game changing play of the day and forcing an interception by Harry, which was very well taken. We had come here to play and we were now beginning to show this. Still well in the game, we just needed a score to bring us level. Charlie escaped another blitz and spotted a weakness over the top. He found his man with the precision needed, but unfortunately we couldn’t convert the chance. The blitz came wave after wave, and Charlie was mesmerizing, somehow evading time after time. Finally, on 4th down, Harry provided an outlet and made a tremendous catch, bringing it in and changing direction to be met with yet another tackle to end the half. We had finished the half with promise and were very much still in the game.

The spitfires brought more defensive pressure in the second half and cancelled out our first drive, partially aided by some tired hands on our side. Josh and Evie began rotating again at blitzing, doing their best to cause problems for the opposition. The Spitfires were making more calculated plays down the field, culminating in a nice catch by number 85. Harry stopped the extra point at the last second and we were now 12 behind, but still in the game. Back on our five yard line, next up came a short run by Lily, which was followed by a good roll out by our QB. He took a short lob over the next man to Tyler, who made no mistake with his catch. He had the rest of the field open to him and it became a foot race with 35 yards to go down the Spitfire sideline. Tyler was able to keep ahead the rest of the way, but the last man was no slouch, just inches away from his heels. What a game to score your first touchdown, and what a way to do it! Well done Tyler! The extra point again went to Tyler, but the catch evaded him. Strangely no extra points yet, so the score was 12-6. We managed a stop on the Spitfire’s next drive to get the ball back. This time Jamie was in the game as a receiver, another new player on his debut day. He took a short catch but was quickly tackled by his nearest marker. Next, it was a cross body throw to Tyler, similar to the thrilling play from the last drive, only this time Tyler had 40 yards to go... Again, he had two defenders to go past but he was already in full stride and was away for the score. No one likes a show off, Tyler. Only joking of course, this was a player getting better and better right in front of our eyes. The extra point went to Jamie, but again it just wasn’t to be. With the game within touching distance, we moved Archie to blitzer and piled the pressure on. His speed and size making things difficult. The spitfires tried in vain to tempt us offside, throwing everything at us. Twice they were halted to fourth down with a combination of batted down passes and tackles. Time was eating off the clock and that would suit us too. Twice they found the yards to complete a first down and so were able to make a go ahead TD in 8 plays. Charlie made a pick on the extra point to make it no good, but running it the length of the field was a tall order. Longhorns now had around twenty seconds to get down the field and score to tie. An extra point after would provide us with a win.

From our first play, Charlie went long to Archie several yards inside the sideline. He’d found a way up the side and an opening had been spotted. The ball teased in the air but the pair had both timed it perfectly. Archie pulled it into his chest, taking no chances, and turned to sprint down the field. One defender gave up and pointed to the sideline, then resumed chase. Archie was still in a dogfight with the remaining spitfire when the former chasing defender clattered into him from behind with 10 yards to go… Nobody knew what was happening but it was thrilling stuff nonetheless! There were calls of stepping out of bounds and more of illegal contact. The referees had some decisions to make and the call did not go our way. The catch was allowed, but he was deemed to have gone out of bounds afterwards. Second down from our own half with 8 seconds left. Harry received and bought us a first down on the half way line, stopping the clock. Now down to 7 seconds left, and our short catch to gain five yards was not going to cut it. It was down to our last play of the game, with a single second to go and twenty yards to goal. The snap is good, Longhorns surge for the end zone. We have a final four seconds of release time and we are scanning the end zone. A player is viable on the inside of the right pylon, and away goes the ball, arcing over the top of the DB. He is beaten and the ball is heading for our man on the line but for one thing: it’s obscured by the sun. It was another thrilling finish to one of our games. Everyone had given it their best, which is all that matters to us, and we couldn’t be happier with the way all of our players played, and learned.

Nuneaton Jaguars

Our last game of the day, this was against perhaps the most accomplished side we could hope to play against on a club level. The game was about to be forfeited due to the Jaguars not turning up. Winning by forfeit is of no value to anyone, least of all our players. We couldn’t find the turquoise jerseys anywhere, and it was another race against time to salvage a final game of the day. Finally a player was spotted wearing unexpected colours, and we got the game going. Jags started with the ball and Lily made the first tackle of the game, and her first tackle of a Great British Lion, Frankie Taylor. Next their QB side armed a pass to their number 12, Izzie McNeal, another Great British Lion. Izzie made Tyler and Harry miss, before cruising in for their first touchdown. Umar was up next, and he had some success making both girls miss. Lily and Harry made exciting catches on consecutive plays, and Umar caused them more problems with his speed. All the Jags could find was a fistful of shirt, and he was a headache for the seasoned Jags players. Some excellent displays of strength, speed and agility from the Jags number 17 increased another score. Charlie found Lily and Harry again but we were just short of the first down we needed. Harry and Charlie teamed up for the next two tackles before Izzie burst down the sideline on 3rd down to go all the way. It was clear at this point that the game would be out of reach and so we threw on our new guys to give them an experience. Evie, Lily, Umar and Jamie all shared the field together on this next drive. Lily had some targets but the Jags were capable of getting in front to break these up. Umar breezed through four jags again and was tackled by the last man. The next play was a completion to Archie for a first down. The Jags rallied to try and stop Umar on the next play, and virtually formed a wall to do so! An inventive way, and quite possibly the only way. Another pass completed to Archie who had made it to their five yard line before a diving tackle stopped him from achieving a much needed TD to end the half.

To start us off on the next half, Evie made an excellent catch that had us holding our breath. She did brilliantly to evade a tackle afterwards to gain us 5 yards. Jamie completed catches out wide twice in succession. One spin later and he’d evaded the lionesses who gave chase, each of them grabbing a flag for good measure deep in Jags territory. He was deemed out of bounds at the half and unfortunately, the play was called back. The Jags served up several more blitzes, some of the quickest all day, and it was tough to get meaningful yards. Jags took over and it was Tyler’s turn to make a tackle both on the Jags five and then on our five having chased down their number 17. We missed what should have been a certain interception and then both teams closed out the game with a few new plays and formations. The scoreline was one sided, but there were learning points for both sides.

It was hard to convey to such young players how well they had done. They had no idea the calibre of players they were competing against. Notable facts from the game are that the Jaguars gave up nil points to any team on the day. We came close.

Our young side also gave up the fewest points to the Jags on the day, 21 in total. Many of the Jags team will be aging up next year, and so this was a unique opportunity for our players to glimpse what’s possible at the top end of this age category.

The Jags made a total of 8 sacks and 6 Interceptions on the day. Incredibly, the Longhorns gave away a single sack, and nil INTs across these three quality opponents.
