🛟🛟 Drowning Prevention Week 🛟🛟

On Wednesday night our rookie swimmers took part in our drowning prevention session. They learned some new skills and were informed about the dangers of water.

Activities they took part in were -
🏁 the water safety code, different flags on beaches, what might be under the water when you can’t see
👖 making a flotation device out of the clothes they were wearing
🛟 how to rescue someone using the lifesaving equipment
💧 how to tow someone back to safety if they can’t swim
🪨 how to enter the water safely and attract attention if in difficulty

Everyone took part in all the activities and hopefully they all feel safer when being around water 🛟

Our next sessions for the rookies are Friday 19th June at the Olympia 6.30pm to 7.30pm and Sunday 21st June at Harris from 9am to 10am. If your child attends these then can they please bring pyjamas with them so they can take part in the session.

🏊🏻‍♀️ Open Water Swimming 🏊🏻‍♀️

While our swimmers and water polo players were busy last week with the Scottish Cup and League Gala, one of our coaches, Jillian Livie decided to take on the challenge of swimming across the Tay.

Entering the Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association Single Tay she entered the water at Tayport Harbour and managed to swim across to the Harbour at Broughty Ferry.

There were 8 swimmers started the race and 4 didn’t finish due to the conditions. Two juniors and two women finished with Jillian winning a silver medal.

After swimming in the Tay twice last year to raise funds for the club trip we can’t wait to see what other swims she will carry out this year 🤩

Well done on your swim Jillian! 🏊🏻‍♀️

🤽🏻‍♀️🤽🏻‍♂️Water Polo Scottish Cup Finals 🤽🏻‍♀️🤽🏻‍♂️

Saturday 6th June saw 6 Scottish Cup Water Polo Finals battled out over the course of the day.

Menzieshill Whitehall were taking part in two of the finals. The U17 girls at 9.15am against Dunfermline Water Polo Club then playing jointly with Dunfermline in the U19 male & open category against Stirling at 5.10pm.

The U17 girls played extremely well against a well drilled Dunfermline team. After a slow start where we didn’t take our chances the girls worked hard to stay in the game. Ksenia was in goal and made a fantastic contribution saving penalties and making numerous saves throughout the game to keep us in it. The girls worked hard and we fought back to finish the game 16-7.

Next up were our U19’s playing with their Dunfermline Male & Open team mates. Playing against a strong Stirling team the game was evenly matched with the score 3-4 to Stirling at half time. To win, the boys needed to keep their discipline and pull out a fantastic second half performance, and this is exactly what they did. There were 8 exclusions and 2 penalties in the second half which shows the physicality of the game. However, the goals kept coming and our boys were eventually crowned Scottish Cup Champions with the final score 14-8.

Congratulations to both teams for making the Finals and for the fantastic display of water polo they put on 🤽🏻‍♂️🤽🏻‍♀️Thanks also to Ruth for coaching with the boys and to James and Jillian for coaching the girls.

We also want to thank all the referees, table officials and volunteers who helped make the day run so smoothly. Without your help the event would not have happened, we appreciate all of you 🥳

Keep your eye on the Scottish Water Polo page for all the official photos from the day!

While focus for the last few weeks has been on the older age groups and the Scottish Cup, our U15 boys have still been playing their league games.

Last Saturday they travelled to Edinburgh to play against Warrender. The game started off very even with the score 4-4 at the end of Q1, goals were once again traded in each direction with our young team just edging into a 7-9 lead at half time. Coach Ruth gave the boys an inspiring team talk where Q3 saw the boys score 6 goals with only 3 to Warrender. Q4 started 10-15 where tiredness crept in with 2 boys getting excluded but the boys managed to hold on to win 12-16 🤽🏻‍♂️🤽🏻‍♂️

Well done to boys for a great victory and thanks to Ruth and Ken for coaching, plus the referees and table officials.

🤽🏻‍♀️🤽🏻‍♂️Water Polo Scottish Cup 🤽🏻‍♀️🤽🏻‍♂️

Over the last two weeks we’ve had some mixed fortunes in the Semi Finals of the Scottish Cup.

Our Senior Women played jointly with Dunfermline Water Polo Club who took on Warrender where once again it was a closely contended game. All matches between the teams this season have been relatively close but once again Warrender came away 9-4 winners and progress to the final.

Our Senior Men took on Dunfermline in their match and fielded a very young team. We were missing some key Senior players but it was a great opportunity for the boys to step up and get a taste of Senior polo. Unfortunately they lost out 28-8 to the strong Dunfermline team who progress to the final.

Next up our U19 boys playing jointly with their Dunfermline team mates took on Warrender Platinum. Once again this was a very close game with the score 7-6 at half time. With 6 more goals in the third quarter it was 11-8 to our boys going into the last quarter. This is where they showed their class scoring another 5 goals to only 2 in reply, the final score was 16-10 and the boys progress to the final 🥳

The last semi final game was our U17 girls who took on Portobello on Tuesday night. The girls were off to a cagey start and taking bad in the narrow pool with the score 0-0 after Q1. They then started playing as a team with the goals coming from 4 different scorers. With Ksenia in goal making excellent saves and debuts from Alice, Ruby and Sophie the girls came away 17-5 winners and secured their place in the final on Saturday 🤩

We now have players in two Scottish Cup Finals taking place this Saturday 6th June at Tollcross, Glasgow 🤽🏻‍♀️🤽🏻‍♂️

The U17 girls are playing first at 9.15am against Dunfermline while the U19 boys are playing at 5.10pm against Stirling 🤽🏻‍♀️🤽🏻‍♂️

We wish both teams the best of luck and would love anyone at a loose end on Saturday to travel through and show your support to the teams, good luck 🏆🏆
