🌊 What a weekend at Belhaven Surf Centre! 🌊

During the last weekend in May Dunbar Surf Lifesaving Club were delighted to host the SLSGB Scottish Lifesaving Roadshow in Dunbar, welcoming George Haynes and Nigel Bowden from the Surf Lifesaving GB HQ team.

The roadshow brought together clubs from across Scotland and the North of England, including Aberdeen SLSC, North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards and Blue Coast Surf Club, all with the shared goal of developing surf lifesaving skills and promoting water safety.

Friday kicked off with an ocean training session, including micro-teaching on board racing techniques and fast water entries. Saturday focused on further coaching development, with candidates completing practical assessments for Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Awards, as well as Trainer Assessor qualifications.

A huge thank you to George and Nigel for sharing their expertise. George has represented Great Britain in lifesaving 11 times, captained the GB Lifesaving Team, and holds both European and Australian titles. Nigel, SLSGB’s National Events Manager, plays a key role in delivering pool and surf national events across the country.

Great training, great conditions, and great people coming together to strengthen surf lifesaving in Scotland. 🤙

BKS Iyengar
🧘🏼 Are you struggling with stiffness, pain, or recovery from a recent / old injury? I offer small, supportive Iyengar yoga classes at the Belhaven Surf Centre to help you move safely and effectively on and off the mat! My classes offer a calm, structured approach to building strength and flexibility; leaving you feeling calmer and more relaxed.
🌿 A typical class includes:
* A gentle seated start to ground the body and tune into your breath
* A mixture of standing, seated and lying poses.
* Clear, detailed instruction and hands on adjustments
* Use of props
* Relaxation to help balance and restore your energy ☺️

How does Iyengar yoga helps:
✔ Precise, guided alignment
Learn to position your body correctly for safer joint positioning, balanced weight distribution and proper muscle engagement
✔ Intelligent use of props
Blocks, belts, and blankets support your body—so you can work safely at your own level.
✔ Build strength & stability
Gentle, sustained poses help rebuild strength without forcing or overloading joints.
✔ Develop better body awareness
Better understand your movement patterns and habits to avoid re-injury.
✔ Small classes (max of 8 people)
Receive personal guidance on pose modifications so that your progress is guided safely
For convenience all classes are available as a block booking (with built in discount) or as a drop in. Please feel free to call/email if you'd like to discuss any concerns you may have about starting yoga. Link in bio.

Save the date - Wednesday 22nd April!

Water quality and Plastic pollution are of concern for communities around Edinburgh and the Lothians as we head into the May Elections at Holyrood.

are hosting an event on Wednesday 22nd April at the Food Court in Edinburgh College, Milton Road Site at 6.30pm as they discuss with candidates what they and their parties will do to tackle water quality, single-use plastic and the circular economy.

The latest of February’s weekly water quality testing results are back from the lab and showing another month of “excellent” water quality at Belhaven.

40 out of 49 (81.63%) of the tests taken since April 2025 have shown “good” or “excellent” water quality and 39 out of 49 (79.59%) have shown “excellent”.

That’s good news for Belhaven but may not be representative of the hundreds of places where people swim, paddle or surf across Scotland. Water quality is only tested at 89 officially designated bathing waters and those are only tested by SEPA between 1st June and 15th September. When SEPA pick new places to test, only swimmers are counted as water users, meaning that surfing, kayaking and stand-op paddle boarding sports go untested. Testing also covers just two pollutants - E.coli and intestinal enterococci- ignoring emerging threats from PFAS, antibiotics-resistant bacteria and microplastics.

are calling for policies that protect water users wherever, whenever and however they use the water.

One of the Surf Centre’s Directors has been gathering weekly water quality samples at Belhaven which are tested for Ecoli and Intestinal Enterococci by a UK accredited laboratory. 🥼 🧪 📊 📈

Of the 46 weekly water tests taken to date at Belhaven since April 2025, only 5 have shown “poor” water quality.

89% have been “sufficient” or above.

83% have been “good” or above.

80% have been “excellent” or above.

Brian is still collecting weekly samples to establish the first year-round data-set as SEPA only test during the traditional bathing season between June and September. He is monitoring the impact of discharges from the two nearest combined sewage overflow pipes and of rainfall on the weekly UKAS accredited lab results for Ecoli and Intestinal Enterococci.

Hopefully, this data is helping create a better understanding for those of us who love our coastline, the marine environment and who enjoy the benefits of being in or by the sea.

We’ll keep posting results on socials.

This voluntary project is only possible due to support, equipment and funding received from

If you would like to support their work, Brian is tackling the to raise funds on their behalf in just over 10 weeks’ time 😬

One of the Surf Centre’s Directors has been undertaking voluntary weekly water quality testing at Belhaven since last April on behalf of

The samples are sent off to a UKAS accredited lab and tested for Ecoli and Intestinal Enterococci in line with the manner in which SEPA also test the water quality (although SEPA only test during the traditional bathing season of June to September). This initiative means that we are now establishing a clearer picture of water quality at Belhaven all year round.

The latest data shows that there has been a consistent run of “good” or “excellent” results since 22nd September.

In fact, 80.95% of the weekly results since April 2025 have been “good” or “excellent”.
