On the weekend past, Pepe’s St Michaels played two fixtures, against Victoria at home in the league on Saturday and then a long trip to play Dundee HSFPs away in the Challenge Cup on Sunday. It would be a disappointing weekend for Saints.
On Saturday, Saints got off to a perfect start, with Logan Fourie taking a wicket with the second ball of the day and then taking another in his third over to leave Victoria 8-2. The bowling was tight for the majority of the innings, with no Victoria batsmen getting significant scores and wickets being taken at regular intervals. However, Saints were not clinical and allowed Victoria’s middle and lower order to make handy contributions, which was helped by another couple of dropped catches, albeit they were tough chances. Victoria were eventually bowled out for 158 in 45.3 overs, with Fourie being the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets.
This was a very achievable target, and Saints started strong at 51-1 off 14 overs. However, Adnan Manzoor fell and was shortly followed by Reece McNay (32), which triggered a middle order collapse that has become far too common, with 8 wickets falling for only 34 runs. This left Ross Dalling and Oscar McNay at the crease for the final wicket, who both showed determination to stay in the middle and managed to restore some pride, putting on a last wicket partnership of 38. Saints ultimately fell short and lost by 35 runs.
On Sunday, a young and inexperienced team travelled to Dundee to take on a good Dundee HSPFs team. Saints batted first, and with few established batters available were bowled out for 77. Akhil Sudhi showed his attacking ability, scoring a good 35 with a couple of powerful 6s.
In reply, Dundee’s former Scotland international Steven Knox easily dealt with some loose early bowling, killing off any slight hope of a Saints victory very early on and the total being knocked off without a loss of a wicket. We wish Dundee HSPFs well for the rest of the competition.
Saints are at home again on Saturday, this time against Milngavie in an important game to attempt to get promotion hopes back on track. In order to do so, captain Reece McNay has said Saints need to improve in a number of areas, including batting, bowling and fielding.
