Criffel

Starting at the carpark at Ardwall mains (bring coins for the carparking donation box - all funds go to Moffat Mountain Rescue Team ) ((one day you may need their help so a couple of quid is a bargain)) head up the slightly muddy track through the kissing gate. After a hundred metres or so turn right and head up the hill. Go with care and respect the hill - the right footwear, refreshments and layers etc. Watch your footing too and keep to the new main path.

We went up for my 9yr old son's birthday and were up and down in a few hours and got a few minutes of viewing the magnificent Solway firth and Annandale when the fog cleared at the top . Loved it! A great morning at Criffel. We saw the path builders who said they were also sorting some boggy bits between Criffel and Knockendoch summits. We've done Knockendoch a couple of years ago by leaving the Criffel path at the first wooden gate which is about half way up the hill and join up the 3 or 4 loan conifers between the two hills. Tbh we preferred Knockendoch summit but if the fog comes down you'll need better navigation skills to get to the top or back down (you won't see the conifers - never mind the summit)!

Bikes for kids ... Definitely not . Horse riders do seem to use the lower slopes

Rockcliffe to kippford boat yard and back again via the forestry commission woods at kippford

Following the jubilee path signs from rockcliffe to kippford and the moat of mark core path sign on kippford high street back to the carpark .

Ice creams in March when we got back to Rockcliffe by the public toilets. Shelly beach to play on at Kippford and sandy beach at rockcliffe . Watch the tides , they come in quick on the Solway. Take money for ice creams . Car park at rockcliffe public toilets are free (we think) but there is a charge at the top of the hill

Look out for the wee blue arrow at the rockcliffe end pointing out the viewpoint at the top of the hill which we think was showing an old castle site called moat of mark . Wee cafe in kippford during the tourist season. Good pub food in kippford too

Had fun down at the shore and exploring the outer walls of the castle. Kids loved the extra long boardwalk around the wetland area. Entry into the castle was closed due to covid but it's a great place to visit in the summer. Ground was frozen so ideal as it can get a bit mucky on the shoreline if its been wet.

Normal Bog Rating 3/5 (at the shore). Good elsewhere

Hartfell Spa and Merlin's Cave, Moffat

We had great fun up here last week. This is a great walk. One of the kids favourites! Me and my boy went further past the Merlin's Cave to see what was further up and found a real wonderland! Icicles, cliffs that look like dry waterfalls, rock faces, pillars. And what a view back to Queensberry

Boots normally or wellies. Not much hope of getting bikes up here. First hills are very steep. Couple of wet bits and a small burn to cross.

A dash to the top and back if you're without kids but it'll take longer with them in tow as the steps are steep! Boots normally. Pretty good underfoot all the way to the top. No chance of getting bikes up here though!

We've always loved this walk, even before kids came along. Bikeable and walkable. Popular with dog walkers.

Boots when its been wet. Wellies when its been very wet.

Just the Lochans Loop takes around ~45 mins at a slow pace. Or go further up the southern upland way until the first forest road and make a loop ~1hr30mins

Kirk Loch and Castle Loch, Lochmaben

This is a great walk. Boots normally. Could get the kids to take bikes. Couple of wet bits near Kirk Loch after very wet weather but pretty good underfoot.

Kirk Loch Loop and back into town by going down the farm road 20-30mins (look out for lost golf balls)! Careful at the road crossing at Castle Loch
