As Drowning Prevention Week comes to an end, we wanted to leave you with one final reminder: water safety isn’t just something to think about when children are tiny.
Yes, it matters when they’re babies, toddlers and preschoolers. It matters when they’re in the pool with us, learning to hold on, float, listen, wait, kick, turn and stay close to their grown-up.
But it also matters when they’re older.
When they’re out with friends.
When they’re near rivers, lochs, reservoirs or the sea.
When they’re away from direct adult supervision.
When they feel confident enough to take risks, but maybe not experienced enough to understand the danger.
Recent RLSS UK messaging has highlighted that drowning deaths among 13–17-year-olds have increased by 67% when comparing 2020–2022 with 2023–2025, and RLSS UK has previously reported that 75% of drownings among 13–17-year-olds happen during the summer months.
That’s why these conversations matter at every age.
Please remind your children, no matter how old they are, to stop and think around water, stay together, never enter open water because of peer pressure, and know what to do in an emergency.
If someone gets into trouble in the water:
📞 Phone 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service inland, or the Coastguard at the coast.
🛟 Don’t jump in after them- even strong swimmers can get into difficulty.
💦 Tell them to float on their back and try to stay calm.
🎒 Throw something that floats if you can, such as a ball, empty bottle, life ring, bag or anything that could help them stay above the water.
And if you ever fall in yourself, fight the instinct to panic or swim hard straight away. Float on your back, breathe, call for help, and wait until the shock passes.
At Turtle Tots, we teach water confidence and safety from the very beginning, but as children grow, the message needs to grow with them.
Enjoy the water. Respect the water. Keep talking about water safety.
