Sat 27th Home match report

Dulverton got back to winning ways on the weekend with an impressive 8-wicket victory over East Huntspill.

A victory at the toss for Hoops saw Dulverton elect to field and Dulverton’s opening bowlers Mushy and his Lordship kept the East Huntspill batsman in check. Dulverton took wickets at regular intervals keeping East Huntspill down with all but Psycho sharing in the wickets.

East Huntspill offered some resistance for their 7th wicket, closing the innings on 169/8 with the pick of the bowling being Dulverton’s King – Sammy How 2/15.

Dulverton got their response underway with Psycho and Tap Tap, who was making his long-awaited return from a self-inflicted injury. Dulverton’s openers looked settled against the East Huntspill opening bowlers until a breakdown in communication between Psycho and Tap Tap, saw Tap Tap returning to the pavilion run out.

Lord Harrison took to the crease and along with Psycho dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground to great delight of a capacity Millham Lane crowd.

Dulverton was close to the target when Psycho was bowled for a well-made 72, bringing Hoops to the crease. With his Lordship still going strong Dulverton reached the target with 15 overs to spare and 8 wickets in hand – an impressive batting display – albeit rare this season! His Lordship with his average in mind ensured red ink next to his name with an unbeaten 81.

Dulverton’s win this weekend has set up a nailing biting climax away to Winsford, with Dulverton needing a win and other results to go in their favour to maintain their Division 2 status.

Match Report - 23rd July - Dulverton v Lydeard St Lawrence (A)

After an agonising loss against Huish the previous week, Dulverton CC travelled out to Lydeard St Lawrence who sat in 2nd place in the league. Harry “His Lordship” Harrison, Adrian “Mushy” Smith and Sammy “The King” How were all unavailable leaving Dulverton with a shortage of recognised bowlers.

To add further trauma there were still some lingering memories of the return fixture which, as far as Dulverton were concerned, never happened

After a brief spell of unexpected rain the captains made their way to the middle where, inexplicably, Carl “the useless tosser” Hooper won another toss on the bounce. Taking into consideration the bowling options, Hoops chose to entrust the team with a bat.

Graham “GT” Turner and Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery opened the innings with GT steaming along until a contact lense related issue arose causing him to briefly retire.
Ali Blundell took to the crease during his absence before Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery was pinned at the stumps for an LBW; Graham managed to reassert his vision in time to come back into the fold. Ali Blundell faced a few balls from their opener, Lambert, who eventually bowled him out for a duck.

The Captain, Carl Hooper and GT stuck around for a while keeping the scoreboard ticking along with GT celebrating his half century during their partnership. There was some relentless bowling from T.Smith who, on the final ball of his spell, claimed Hoops who was caught in the field for 24.

Dave “The Shepherd” Rendle also made his way to 50 runs as GT, Tom “Golden Balls” Blundell and Toby “cricket brain” Cottrell all made way. Mitch Bennellick, with The Shepherd guiding him through from the other end, made a quick fire 10 runs off two balls via some very filthy thick edges and settled in for the duration for 37*. Oli Shortman was unfortunate to get run out whilst the other young gun, Max Routley, managed to come away with 5* giving the team a respectable score of 218/8.

Dulverton took to the field with Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery opening the bowling attack. Contrary to the bowling concerns a dream start ensued with Lydeard’s No.1 falling during the first over with a nick back to the keeper. GT and Tap Tap continued to plug away until the next breakthrough with a catch on the slips from Ali Blundell. The dynamic duo of Tom “Golden Balls” Blundell and veteran Andrew “Cheesy” Nicholas came on for the change and took a further four wickets between them including a palm stinging catch from The Shepherd at Long off. Ali Blundell and the Shepherd finished things off however, within the 38th over, Lydeard had met their target and took the win by 4 wickets.

There might have been some small ripples on the seismometer as a mild earthquake was recorded on the boundary; an intense battle between Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery and Mother Earth - despite Rob’s best haymaker it would seem Earth won that round.
Unfortunately another loss for Dulverton CC however, given the circumstances, a well fought out contest against tough opposition who look to challenge for honours this season in Division 2.

Match Report - 16 July 2022. Huish Champflower v Dulverton cc.

Dulverton headed away to face Huish Champflower at the grounds of Milverton cc, on the back of a 9 wicket victory the previous week against West Monkton.

This weekend's fixture was a much win game for both sides who found themselves languishing 2nd and 3rd from bottom of the 2nd division in the West Somerset league.

Miraculously the Skipper Hoops managed to win the toss for the first time this season after 10 previous failed attempts, and elected to bat first on a baking hot and sunny afternoon.

After a few overs in the contest it appeared that the wicket was behaving in a very unpredictable fashion with tennis ball bounce and varied pace aplomb! Fortunately the outfield was lightning quick and there was enough bad balls for dulverton to capitalise on to make the score 48-1 off 10 and 100-2 off 20 overs.

Highlights were a classy 44 from Lord Harrison and a belligerent 37 from opener Tap Tap. The next 10 overs saw the Skipper Hoops and the big hitting Jibber Blundell push the score up to above 190 where by Tom fell for a pleasing to the eye 34. When Hoops finally fell for a top score and well played 55; the score was now past 200 and the innings now slowed rather and wickets fell with unwanted frequency, for a final total of 234-9 off 40 overs. A good challenging score and total to defend for the Dulvy bowlers.

Huish got off to a watchful start with their openers and the disciplined and accurate bowling resulted in an excellent run out to get rid of their danger batsmen, 'Shappers', but after 10 overs Huish had managed to be up close to the run rate at 48-1. The next 10 overs from Dulvy resulted in some way ward bowling and to many extras, which allowed Huish to score 108-2 off 20 overs. Firmly in the game and on the ascendancy.

Then next 10 overs saw far better bowling from Dulvy, with GT and Cheesy taking 3 wickets between them in the process. The score was now 167-5 after 30 with 78 needed off the last 10 overs (anyones game). Huish we're still favourites as there opener and top scorer Callum Lane was still at the crease, driving and middling it well! He eventually fell for a great knock of 91.

This left Huish needing 36 to win off the final 5 overs with 4 wickets remaining, then 22 off 3 overs with 3 wickets remaining. With only 9 needed off the final two overs Huish were now odds on favourites, but GT managed to roll back the years and deliver a maiden from the penultimate over of the match. 9 needed from 6 legal deliveries, which was to be bowled by Rob the Tap Tap Dubery. The first 3 deliveries resulted in 5 runs scored. Now 4 needed to win off 3 balls. The fourth delivery resulted in a much heated and controversial run out for Dulvy, where their No 8 batter Alex Riddle called for a risky 2 to remain on strike. With the final ball of the game Huish Champ found themselves on 233-8 with 2 runs needed to win. Their eventual match winner Alex Riddle ( 21 not out) managed to loft the last ball high over mid on and scamper back for the 2 runs required for an exhilarating victory for Huish Champ.

Unlucky Dulvy cc as a tied match would have been a fair reflection of the cricket on offer over the highly contested 80 overs, between two equal sides.
A great game of cricket was had by all at the end of the day, in what was a tight and competitive cricket match.

Match Report - 18th June- Dulverton v Churchinford (H)

Dulverton faced a tough challenge this weekend against Churchinford; a team challenging for honours towards the higher end of the table.
Hooper was faced with selection issues and, unfortunately, not due to a plethora of available players - GT, The Shepherd and Lord Harry of Harrison were all unavailable due to varying levels of logistical issues. Trundell, licking his wounds from the cup game on Wednesday night, took the tough decision to opt out. Will “Bowlers name?” Baker was unavailable and Toby Cottrell was away in Newcastle on a stag do looking after the club president.
Despite one last minute call for veteran Chris Dubery to complete the 11 he chose to decline our generous offer and the team chose to progress with a valiant team of 10.
The challenges of the day never seemed to cease as, with duck man contender Harry “Tuna” Bruce scheduled to bat at a nose-bleeding 6 in the order, Hooper knew his tossing would prove to be pivotal as the ghosts of the match against Lydeard St Lawrence haunted the dressing room. After weekend after weekend of useless tossing, Hooper finally prevailed and sending Churchinford in to bat.
Dulverton got off to a dream start as Sammy “The King” How dismissed one of the openers early on making it 5-1. Unfortunately that proved to be as good as it got for Dulverton for quite some time as Churchinford’s next partnership proved to be far more stubborn and somewhat destructive. Adrian “Mushy” Smith pulled up injured early on during his spell but selflessly chose the team over his personal health by taking more Ibuprofen than prescribed and powering on through his allotted overs.
Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery and Andrew “Cheesy” Nicholas soon took over the bowling duties however, with 5 bowlers needed to get through 40 overs, Mitch Bennellick stepped up to fill the void in the absence of other more established bowlers, proceeding to be tonked around the ground as a learning curve for the infancy of his bowling career.
The Return of the King back to the crease finally saw another much needed wicket with Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery cleaning out a further 3; Sammy “The King” How taking an easy catch making Toby Cottrell’s the weekend before look like witchcraft.
Oli Shortman, his Dad (donning Village cricket special attire; jeans) and Max Routley put in a good shift with some committed fielding. Harry “Tuna” Bruce briefly forgot he was in a cricket game choosing to head the ball for the top corner to win El Classico rather than catch it. Chruchinford closed their innings at 246-5.

It was now Dulverton’s turn to walk to the middle with Adrian “Mushy” Smith and Rob “Tap Tap” Dubery opening the batting. The Dulverton wicket showed some uncharacteristic bounce and Mushy, probably still seeing things from his Ibuprofen overdose, edged a ball to slip for a duck creating concern amongst the batting line up. Skipper Carl Hooper came in to replace him as the pair scored a handful of runs between them.

Despite the day beforehand proving to be a sweltering 30+ degrees the weather forecast had always threatened with some heavy showers and, after a few spells of drizzle at times throughout the game, the elements proved decisive as sustained rainfall plagued the Dulverton home ground. Hooper and Tap Tap made the decision to head back to the pavilion with lack of light and plenty of moisture available. Watching from the clubhouse as front after front of rain fell the hard decision was made to abandon the game.
