Full Results from the Last Ever Hilly House Club Championship!

Last 16 (15 up) -
Rich Bullock 13 - 15 Dave Ainsbury
Still recovering from a serious injury, Rich Bullock (a serial Hilly House Club Comp winner) faced a tough opening test against a man who has hit some solid form on Baggeridge. A close game in which Rich led for a long period. Dave hitting his 2s was the big difference in this game and was the factor in him getting over the line.

Ritchie Bate 15 - 7 Wayne Marsden
Another potentially good game was drawn out here in what was a stacked half of the draw. This one didn't live up to what might have been. Ritchie was quick out of the blocks and never let Wayne catch up.

Gary Bolton 3 - 15 Kevin Bibb
The difference in experience was there to be seen in this game. The scoreline may make things look worse than it was for Gary, who has shown huge signs of improvement this season.

Lee Maslin 15 - 8 Phil Bate
Former chairman and all round club legend, Lee Maslin, faced off against current chairman, Phil. Lee's return to the game 3 months ago has been nothing short of brilliant. The form he showed since his near 7 year hiatus has been impressive and he carried that into this game.

Pete Bate 15 - 5 Brian Williams
An early statement of intent from Pete as he quickly books his place in the last 8. Having struggled a bit on Baggeridge over the past few months, a switch back to his old Greenmaster Bowls paid dividends.

Craig Ainsbury 15 - 13 Gregg Arnold
As soon as it was drawn it was a candidate for game of the round. So it proved to be. It could have gone either way in the end, but Craig has enough to get over the line.

Katie Bate 7 - 15 Mick Hickman
Kate stepped in to make up the numbers and drew Mick, who's season had been ended early on by injury. A return to the green sees him pick up a win against the inexperienced Kate, who gave a decent account of herself for a none player.

Martin Morris 15 - 6 Barry Marsh
Martin starts as he means to go on. A commanding victory over experienced stalwart Barry Marsh.

Quarter Finals (15 up) -
Dave Ainsbury 10 - 15 Ritchie Bate
Ritchie again got off to a good start, but this time was pegged back by Dave. Dave goes from 5-0 down to 7-5 up, only to find himself 12-7 down again. Dave pulls it back to 12-10 before Ritchie runs out.

Kevin Bibb 6 - 15 Lee Maslin
Another clinical single figure win for Maz. Looking to be in ominous firm as he sets up a semi final with Ritchie. Maz storms into a 10-1 lead here and never ceases control.

Pete Bate 15 - 13 Craig Ainsbury
Another game featuring Craig that looked like it was going to be a close one, and it was!
Trading blows early on before Pete pulls away to lead 9-3. Craig hits some form to narrow the deficit and put Pete's lead under serious pressure. Craig takes a narrow lead at 11-10 before Pete hits two quick doubles to wrestle back the initiative. Crag again fights back to trail just 14-13 before Pete finishes things off.

Mick Hickman 7 - 15 Martin Morris
Martin controls this one from the get-go. Mick is never able to get a foothold in the tie and Martin plays well again to earn his place in a tough semi final with Pete.

Semi Finals (18 up) -
Ritchie Bate 18 - 16 Lee Maslin
It starts as a close game with Maz keeping his nose just ahead. Neither player can build up a head of steam with the biggest break in the game being just 5. This was the mini run that put Ritchie into the lead and puts a small margin of daylight between the two. This is quickly extinguished and the game is 16-16. Ritchie takes the next two ends with singles to win it.

Pete Bate 18 - 15 Martin Morris
You'd have got long odds on Martin beating Pete here. An air of amazement quickly started to fill the air as the pair trade shots, but Martin leads. Not only is he winning this game he's playing well. Martin's biggest leads were 6-2 and 13-8, which was when people really started to think that the shock was on. Pete gets it back to 13-12 but Martin pulls away again! Now with a 15-12 lead, two good ends away from a pace in the final. Martin finally starts to yield to the pressure and at 16-15, Pete leads for the first time in the game! From 12-15 down, Pete runs out in 4 ends to book a place in the last ever game in Hilly House history.

Final -
So here it is! The final paragraph in the final chapter of the last volume of our history! Somewhere between encore and main event, a battle of blood!
Far from the first time the brothers have met on a bowling green and hopefully, not the last.
The club's rich history of legends runs deep, and maybe if we had existed for a few more years, these two could have joined them!
As expected, the game starts tightly and gets to 6-6 before Pete has a mini run to pull away into a 10-6 lead.
Ritchie then takes his turn to have a little spell and takes a 12-10 lead. Three ends later he leads 14-11. That would be where it ended for Ritchie though. Pete finds a prosperous bit of land that Ritchie just cannot get the hang of and he hits 10 shots in a row over the next 8 ends to run out and be forever known as the Undisputed Hilly House Champion!

Ritchie Bate 14 - 21 Pete Bate

Results from the last ever Hilly House Doubles Competition -

In recent years, our doubles competition has seen "A team players" teamed up with "B Team players". Being the last ever time we will do this, this was waived so that it was possible for anyone to be drawn with anyone else.
It threw up some interesting pairs as Ritchie Bate & Dave Ainsbury were the first pair put together and soon found out their opponents, which were Margaret Copland & Tony Buffey.
Game 2 saw Craig Ainsbury & Brian Williams set for a tasty clash with Phil Bate & Wayne Marsden.
The third game was Phil Lacon & Martin Pitt vs Pete Bate & Gary Bolton and the final quarter final tie was Gregg Arnold & Barry Marsh taking on the pair of Lee Maslin & Martin Morris.

Quarter Finals -

Ritchie Bate/Dave Ainsbury 21 - 9 Margaret Copland/Tony Buffey
Ritchie & Dave got off to a quick start and took control of the tie early on. With leads of 15-1 and 19-5, Margaret & Tony claw a few back before Ritchie & Dave finish things off

Wayne Marsden/Phil Bate 21 - 10 Brian Williams/Craig Ainsbury
Much like the other game in this half of the draw, one of the pairs storm into a lead and find themselves 14-2 up. This was Wayne & Phil, who then go on to maintain control of the tie and see off their dangerous opponents.

Phil Lacon/Martin Pitt 10 - 21 Gary Bolton/Pete Bate
A blistering start from Phil Lacon may have stunned the pairing of Pete & Gary who found themselves in a tight game for the first 15 ends. Pete & Gary then hit a 4 to take control of the game and soon finished it off with a barrage of shots in the last three ends.

Barry Marsh/Gregg Arnold 18 - 21 Lee Maslin/Martin Morris
A 90 minute battle between two teams who both on paper and the green, were evenly matched.
A cluster of 1's and the occasional 2 over 17 ends was a huge factor in the epic battle attrition. 9-12 the score at this point before Lee & Martin get a foothold. 18-11 up, they then find themselves pegged back to 18 across as Gregg & Barry hit 7 shots in three ends. Three singles from Lee & Martin win the game for them 3 ends later.

Semi Finals -
Ritchie Bate/Dave Ainsbury 21 - 6 Wayne Marsden/Phil Bate
You'd be forgiven for expecting another back and forth game here, but that's not what we got. Ritchie & Dave take a 7-0 lead early on before getting pegged back to 9-6. Five ends later though, Ritchie and Dave had hit the Boosters and after a single, they hit a 3 and a 4 which were sandwiched between two 2s, the match was over.

Gary Bolton/Pete Bate 16 - 21 Lee Maslin/Martin Morris
Lee and Martin found themselves in yet another close fought battle. Never more than 4 shots between them until the very last end. Lee and Martin managed to get away from Gary and Pete and from 14-15 down, book their place in the final.

Final -
Ritchie Bate/Dave Ainsbury vs Lee Maslin/Martin Morris......... and so it came down to this! Secretary vs Former Chairman/Club Legend. Father in Law vs Son in Law!
Having breezed through their previous game, Ritchie & Dave had found themselves on the sidelines for nearly 90 minutes, as their opponents had two epic battles. On the one hand, Lee & Martin were bound to be feeling the effects of approximately 150 minutes of back to back bowling. On the other, two blokes with back injuries who hadn't been privy to the no doubt changed conditions from earlier in the evening were bound to have to regroup.
Whether on pure adrenaline from having continuously played since around 7.30pm, or whether they were used to the conditions, Lee & Martin quickly started their hands moving towards the prize. 10-0 up after 6 ends and with Martin leading well, it was looking like they may finally have a nice short game and what a time to do it.
As the clock approached 11pm (yes, 11pm) they had developed a 14-2 lead after quickly putting to bed what some may have thought was a revival from Ritchie & Dave.
But then, the spark of hope that had been quickly doused, reignited as Dave finds a bit of prosperous land. Martin, who after almost ten years had just realised that Ritchie was left handed, had gone off the boil and was struggling to make an impact once Dave and Ritchie had got a run going. Six ends later, it was 14-14. Once again though, Lee & Martin hit back with a two, but can't keep up any momentum and Dave & Ritchie take 6 shots in three ends to put themselves just 1 away from victory. Lee & Martin keep it alive with a pair of singles in the next two ends. With the game now on a knife edge at 20-18, it was Ritchie & Dave who finally finished things off on the 23rd end of the match at 11.15pm, becoming Undisputed Hilly House Double Champions!

Final Score -
Ritchie Bate/Dave Ainsbury 21 - 18 Lee Maslin/Martin Morris

Last Night's Dudley & District League Division 2 Result

The curtain falls on Hilly House history with a win at our adopted home. Between injuries and absences, our patchwork team gets over the line by just three shots.
Feels a bit strange to be writing this post, knowing it is that last result that will be put on here.
Before we go, a big thank you to our members throughout the club's history. Thank you to our opponents at all levels, who gave us the opportunity to get out there and compete and thank you to everyone who showed compassion when we lost our green and ultimately, our club.
What's next? I don't know. That's the honest answer at this time. Either way, whether it be collectively or individually, we'll see you down the road!
Thanks again!

Tonight's Oldbury & District League Division 1 Result

We overturn a very bad start to see the season out with a win. Our history in the Oldbury League comes to an end as we finish in fourth place. Given the quality possessed by the three teams that finished above us, we have to be happy to class ourselves as "the best of the rest".
