We have classes for Children and Adults, so we can teach th

e groups at the right level. We follow a karate syllabus as laid down by the YSSU UK with Sensei Casey 8th Dan as the head of the UK. YSSU UK are the biggest Sh*to Ryu-Shukokai Group in the UK and we are directly affiliated to the SSU in Japan. At Openshaw KC we teach in an informal manner but still have strict guidelines regarding etiquette and discipline, we try to maintain a fun atmosphere at the right time and everyone progresses at their own pace. The First lesson is free so you have nothing to lose by giving it a go, there are no catches or hidden agendas. We realise that Karate is not for everyone, as it takes a lot of character, dedication, self discipline, respect, concentration and you have to put the effort in to reap the awards.

It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Denis Casey Sensei, 9th Dan Hanshi, who left us on 9th February 2026.

Denis Sensei was a cornerstone of our karate family, a leader who dedicated his life to the art of Karate-do. His wisdom, integrity, and passion shaped countless students and instructors over the decades. He was not only a master of technique but also of character, leaving an indelible mark on our entire association.

Our deepest sympathies go to his family and all who knew him. We will honor his memory by continuing his legacy and upholding the values he lived by.

We will share details of future commemorations soon. Until then, we reflect with gratitude on the gift of having walked alongside him.

Rest in peace, Sensei.

A huge welll done to all those that entered the Welsh Open Karate Championships in Abergele on Sunday. Some outstanding results across the board.

From a contingent of 13 competitors, they managed to bring home

6 Gold Medals
8 Silver Medals
8 Bronze Medals

It was great to see everyone supporting each other, sharing losses and wins as a team.

Thank you to Sensei James and Jo on coaching and also the parents for all pitching in together.

Thank you to those that helped de-rig the hall afterwards.

Other Graders,

To those that did not meet the required standard on this occasion, take on board the feedback given and what you need to do.
As a grading officer I am not there to “fail” you.

As your instructor, I would not let anybody grade who was not capable of meeting the standard expected for your next grade / belt!

So, you need to refocus your efforts, take this as a lesson learned and a good reminder that passing gradings is not a given, especially at higher Kyu grade levels.

It is you alone who can either do things to the required standard and put some “oomph” into the sections or as last night showed with some of you, do less than required or just go through some kind of minimal “that’ll do” mind set!
