The Chemo G’ournals. Day 82. Round 4 Monday
So, Round 5 this week. Nurse’s appointment tomorrow, as per, two days before the next infusion. A chance this morning to reiterate why I’ve been writing these journals, and why I’ve mentioned chemo here on Facebook in the first place.
Occasionally, the journal will include a link to the JustGiving page we’ve created. It’s not for research into cancer, as incredible and vital as that work is. Every penny donated will go directly towards improving the patient and visitor experience on the ward where people with cancer are treated, right here at our Bolton Hospital.
Every. Single. Penny.
Can you help us make a difference with this charity? Please, every little genuinely helps. Even the price of a posh coffee can make someone’s day a little brighter on the ward. ☕
One of my biggest priorities over the next year is to give back, to pay it forward and to recognise the massive part that the NHS, and especially the amazing team on N4, have played in getting me well again. When I first started planning Challenge 70, I had other ideas for fundraising, but life has a way of reshuffling your priorities. And now, those priorities are a little more urgent and a lot closer to home.
One of the events in Challenge 70 will be a five-day ride around the North West with some of my amazing friends. We start on Friday 3rd July, right outside the hospital entrance, and finish five days later with over 750 kilometres in our legs. The route takes us through some of the most historic places in the country — Chester, Lancaster, and York among them.
Where else in the world can you pedal through landscapes steeped in history and help a facility that’s saving lives every single day?
It feels exciting. It feels right.
Personally, I’m still clawing my way back to fitness but as I mentioned yesterday, it finally feels like the tide is turning. Today I’m heading into a rainy Manchester to indulge one of my occasional hobbies with my camera (because apparently you can’t out-train curiosity). I’ll record a session before my hospital visit tomorrow and try to set the tone for the week.
Thursday, exercise-wise, is a write-off, on the ward most of the day but beyond that, I’ll be in the lap of the chemo gods as to what I can manage over the week thereafter.
The intention is there, and if it feels right, I’ll deliver.
Have a great day — be your best — and maybe take a moment to count your blessings. Even the small ones. Especially the small ones.
