Droitwich Lifesaving Club

The group, which meets at the pool, at Droitwich Spa Leisure centre, between 6pm and 8pm on Sunday evenings is made up of members from aged 10 upwards. The club splits into two groups including a β€˜rookie’ group of those aged 10 to 13 and a senior group for over-13s. Youngsters can put the training towards GCSE work, Duke of Edinburgh schemes or just take part for fun.

Hot weather is here. Please read this.

With temperatures set to hit highs in Worcestershire this week, we know the urge to cool off in open water is strong. Rivers, canals, lakes and reservoirs might look inviting right now. They are not.
Cold water shock can hit within seconds, even on the hottest day. Hidden currents and unseen hazards beneath the surface make open water unpredictable and dangerous. Every year in the UK, people lose their lives this way.

If you see someone in difficulty, do not jump in. It can make things much worse very quickly. Instead:
Phone. Float. Throw.
Call 999.
Tell them to float on their back.
Throw something that floats.

If you or your child ever falls into water unexpectedly, remember Float to Live:
Tilt your head back, relax, spread your arms and legs, and focus on steady breathing. Once calm, shout for help or swim to safety.

The @ Water Safety Code keeps it simple: Stop and Think. Stay Together. Float. Call 999.

At Droitwich Lifesaving Club, teaching young people how to stay safe in and around water is at the heart of everything we do. Our Rookie Lifeguards, from age 9, learn these skills every week.

Stay safe this week, Worcestershire.

This week is RLSS UK's national Drowning Prevention Week, running from 13 to 20 June. It's the UK and Ireland's biggest annual water safety campaign, and this year it's putting extra focus on teenagers as well as younger children, with new figures showing drowning deaths among 13 to 17 year olds have risen significantly in recent years.
At DSLC, water safety is what we do every Sunday evening. Our Rookies and Seniors learn the Water Safety Code as part of their training:
Stop and think. Spot the dangers before you go near water.

Stay together. Never swim alone.

Float. If you get into trouble, float on your back to help you breathe and call for help.

Call 999 or 112. Ask for the fire service if someone is in trouble in the water.
If you've got children heading off to lidos, rivers or the seaside this summer, take a minute to talk them through the code. It's simple, but it saves lives.
Want to learn lifesaving skills properly? DSLC trains every Sunday from 6pm at Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre. We're welcoming a new cohort from September Rookies from age 9, Seniors from age 12. Get in touch at [email protected].

This has been a desperately sad week. At least nine people, most of them young, have lost their lives in open water during the heatwave. Our hearts go out to every family affected.

As a club affiliated to Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK , we feel it is important to share their warning: water temperatures stay dangerously cold even when air temperatures soar. Cold water shock can affect even strong swimmers within seconds.

If you or someone near you gets into difficulty in open water: Float to Live. Lie on your back, stabilise with your arms and legs, let your breathing settle, then call for help or swim to safety.

We have been out at Droitwich Lido this season giving our young members supervised experience of open-air swimming, and we will be welcoming new Rookies from age 9 when we return to the newly refurbished Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre in September. If you have a youngster who would benefit from proper water safety skills, get in touch now to join the waiting list.
