Castle Lads Make Their Point โ›ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช

Full report to follow but a massive well done to Ciaran Mahon and his Bright Castle Jimmy Bruen team following thier highly impressive win over Warrenpoint this afternoon.

Solid home wins from Darren Nelson and Owen Breen and Dylan Duffy and Kevin Boyd, coupled with a fantastic away win from Captain Ciaran and Daniel Craig at Warrenpoint were enough to send the Castle Lads through, no mean feat considering their opponents have enjoyed multiple Jimmy Bruen title wins over the years.

Great stuff Lads, keep her lit โ›ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ

The Mighty Quinn Scores At The Castle โ›ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ”ดโšซ๏ธ

Having captained the Down Minor football team to All-Ireland glory in 1987, Mark Quinn knows a thing or two about winning and while his beloved Arsenal were denied a famous win in the Champions League final on Saturday night, Mark still had reason to be cheerful as he claimed the win in the Saturday Stableford competition at Bright Castle Golf Club. This yearโ€™s Club vice-Captain is one of the steadiest performers week in, week out at Bright and his hugely impressive 40 points total on Saturday saw him claim victory, two points clear of Ron Dunwoody in second, with Arnold Ennis a further point adrift in third. Damien Oakes took fourth spot ahead of Ross Dunwoody in fifth, while Darren Boyd (75) claimed the gross prize award, as well as two shares of Saturdayโ€™s twos pot, with other shares going to overall winner, Mark, Paul Kelly, Donal Smith, Stephen Stranney, Darren McConnell and Brian Smyth.

Having mentioned in a previous report that winning scores in excess of 40 points are a rarity at the Castle these days, Raymond Love totally debunked that theory when his superb 45 points saw him top the leaderboard in the May 16th Saturday Stableford event. Needless to say, Raymondโ€™s World Handicap Index rating took a bit of a hit thereafter but given the nature of this system, it will regulate in time as he gets more and more competition cards in. Paul Brown, Gary Carberry, Damien Oakes and Ken Montgomery filled the minor placings and Darren Nelson took the gross prize. Having waited ages to pocket one share of any competition twos pot, Ken Montgomery managed to bag two shares, with single shares going to Patrick Bell, Darren Nelson, Brian Smyth, Damien Oakes and Stephen Stranney.

Bright sunshine on Saturday, May 23rd greeted all those taking part in that dayโ€™s stableford event and it was Stevie Maxwellโ€™s time to shine, his 40 points haul enough for a two points victory, ahead of this yearโ€™s Club Captain, Donal Smith, who also shared the twos pot with Damien Oakes and Mark Regan. Mussen Laverty, Sean Kearney and Owen Breen filled the other minor placings, with Darren Nelson faring best of the low men to secure the gross prize.

Sean Toner (39 points), Peter Mitchell (39) and Neil Smyth (38pts) have all enjoyed successes in recent Sunday Sweepstake competitions, while last Mondayโ€™s Bank Holiday sweep went to Gerard Creggan. Members are reminded that they must have entered a minimum of four competitions in 2026 to be eligible for prizes on Captainโ€™s Day, which is pencilled in for Saturday, August 1st. Captainโ€™s Day entry sheet lists are now available in the Club shop, where members can select whether they wish to play in the morning (830am) or afternoon (130pm) shotgun starts.

The Bright Castle Junior Cup team travelled to Rockmount on Sunday past and while they failed to secure a top four spot which would have seen them make the knock-out stages, they performed with credit to finish ninth overall, with Darren Boyd (+3) faring best of the Castle Lads. Ciaran Mahonโ€™s Jimmy Bruen are in action this coming Saturday, (June 6th), when they face Warrenpoint, while the Senior Men Over 50 will tackle Letterkenny in round three of that competition on Saturday, June 20th.

The scheduling of that Letterkenny match has resulted in the Captainโ€™s Charity competition for members now taking place place over the weekend of June 27th & 28th, although the Captainโ€™s Guests Charity evening will go ahead as planned on the evening of Friday, June 19th. As per previous reports, all the various fundraising events this year, including the aforementioned Members and Guests events, will be raising money for this yearโ€™s nominated Captainโ€™s charity which is Life Changes, Changes Lives (LCCL) & Pop-Up Art, Downpatrick.

The draw for this yearโ€™s Club Matchplay took place recently and anyone involved in first round matches should note that first round matches need to be played on or before Sunday, June 14thand not Sunday, June 7th, with all other subsequent rounds also pushed back a week. The full draw is available on the Master Scoreboard app and is also on display in the Club shop and on the noticeboard opposite the shop.

The third of this yearโ€™s Order of Merit competitions, (the Nora Ennis Memorial Trophy), takes place this coming weekend and after two events, Gerard Kelly jnr. (71pts) leads the way, just ahead of Phil Bullock (70) and a trio of players on 69 points, namely Arnold Ennis, Peter Mitchell and Chris Murray. Members are reminded that their six best scores from the eight 2026 Order of Merit events count towards their overall total.

As the summer reaches approaches and the evenings are at their longest, members and visitors alike are reminded that they must book a tee time, even if they are not intending to play a full round. Members are also asked to remove their names from weekend tee time slots if they do are unable to play. With the course in such good condition, (credit as ever to Arnold, Gordon & co), everyone playing at Bright Castle is asked to repair pitch-marks on the greens, replace divots on the fairways and to rake bunkers after use. These three simple actions take very little time but if we all get into the habit of doing all three, it will help keep the course in the fine fettle itโ€™s in at the present time.

Something for the Weekend ๐Ÿ˜€โ›ณ๏ธ

Still a few weeks away but looking forward to the weekend of June 19th - 21st and raising funds for LCCL & Pop Up Art, Downpatrick.

Massive thanks to Jim Monaghan Car Sales, Kieran McMahon, Brian Rainey, The Minerstown Tavern and Country Lane Candles for already agreeing to sponsor a green and/or tee box for the weekend, if anyone else would like to do so, please do not hesitate to contact Captain Donal Smith via the usual messaging formats or on 07843807516.

Rumour has it that thereโ€™s some fine weather on the way, hereโ€™s hoping it hangs around for a few more weeks ๐Ÿ˜€

Shares greatly appreciated ๐Ÿค—

Thanks in advance ๐Ÿ™Œโ›ณ๏ธ

Well Done Lads ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œโ›ณ๏ธโ›ณ๏ธโ›ณ๏ธ

Massive well done to our Senior Men Over 50s side, who enjoyed an extremely hard fought win over Castlerock Golf Club in their round two match this afternoon.

Unfortunately, I donโ€™t have a photo of Ian (Craig), Mark (Quinn), Brian (Smyth) and Martin (McQuillan) who were representing Bright Castle at Castlerock but unfortunately I do have one of Arnold (Ennis), Team & Club Captain Donal (Smith), Damian Oakes and Darren Boyd, pictured before thier respective wins at the Castle.

Full report to follow but the heroes of the hour were Ian and Mark, who secured a last hole win in thier match to send Bright through to round three, where they will meet either Letterkenny or Mallusk.

Great work Lads ๐Ÿ™Œโ›ณ๏ธ

Murray Springs To May Success At Bright Castle.

Sunny conditions, coupled with a brisk northerly wind greeted all those playing at Bright Castle Golf Club this past weekend, where the second Order of Merit competition of the year, the May Spring Trophy, was up for grabs. The soft underfoot playing conditions that prevailed in the early months of the year have thankfully disappeared and without wishing to put too fine a point on things, the Coniamstown Road course is in absolutely superb condition at the present time. While some of the โ€˜ground under repairโ€™ scars will take a little longer to repair, the Ennis family and co deserve a huge amount of credit and praise for the work theyโ€™ve put in and on behalf of the members committee and indeed all the members of Bright Castle, Iโ€™d like to thank them for their continued efforts.

As expected, there was a bumper entry over the weekend but the aforementioned breeze made playing conditions difficult and kept the scoring on the low side. Chris Murray enjoyed a fantastic year as Club Captain last year and he came out on top in the May Spring Trophy, although several countbacks were needed to determine the first three placings. Peter Mitchell and Ross Dunwoody matched Chrisโ€™ 37 points total but a superior last six holes points total gave Chris the victory, with Peter and Ross taking second and third respectively. A further countback was also required to separate George McGuire and Kevin Boyd for the fourth and fifth prizes, while Arnold Ennis took the gross prize with a four over par 77. Phil Bullock (35pts) only just failed to make the podium at the weekend but his outrageous eagle two from all of 150 yards out at the par four, fifth hole, meant that he pocketed a share of the bumper twos pot, with other shares going to Joe Tumelty, Darren Boyd and the weekend champion, Chris Murray. As mentioned, the May Spring Trophy was the second of eight Order of Merit events and I will have an update on the overall standings in next weekโ€™s report. Members are reminded that their best six scores count towards their overall total, with the next event being the Nora Ennis Memorial Trophy on the weekend of June 6th/7th.

Sam Burns is one of the up and coming stars on the USPGA Tour but Bright Castleโ€™s very own namesake showed that he also knows a thing or two about winning after claiming victory in the April 26th Sunday Stableford competition. Samโ€™s 40 points saw him finish two points ahead of Jason Parker in second, with Mark Quinn a further two shots adrift in third spot. Winning scores of 40 points and above were few and far between last year and although a similar story is expected in 2026, Pat Fitzsimons matched Samโ€™s 40 points winning score from the previous weekend to top the leaderboard in the May 2nd Saturday Stableford. Dylan Duffy (39pts) took second, while Paul Brown, Darren Boyd and Allister Jess took the other minor placings. Darren McConnell, Colin Skillen and Sam Burns shared the twos pot while Arnold Ennis shot the low round of the day to take the gross prize. There were smaller than normal turnouts for the competitions that were played on Sunday, May 3rd and on May Day (Monday, May 4th) but Shay Blaney and Garrett Cullen wonโ€™t have minded that one bit. Shayโ€™s 35 points were enough to give him the Sunday win, ahead of Neal McNamara in second and Patrick Bell in third. The following day, Garrettโ€™s 38 points were more than enough to give him the win, three points clear of Chris Murray in second, with Kevin Duggan a further point adrift in third. While Declan Toman pocketed the May Day Monday twos pot, no twos have been recorded in the last two Sunday competitions, which means there will be a triple rollover this coming Sunday, May 17th.

The Bright Castle Jimmy Bruen team progressed to round two of this yearโ€™s competition after their round one opponents, Slieve Russell, were unable to field a team last Saturday and the Senior Men Over 50 side also progressed to round two of that competition following their victory over a very sporting Ardminnan Golf Club in round one. Things are likely to get tougher for our Senior Menโ€™s side and Castlerock will be an extremely tough nut to crack in the second round, with that match pencilled in for this coming Sunday afternoon(May 17th) at 3pm.

Anyone interested in playing in this yearโ€™s Club Matchplay must have their name on the entry sheet and paid their ยฃ5 entry fee paid by Sunday, May 24th. There will be no late entries accepted this year.

Paul Brown was the lucky winner of last weekโ€™s Bonus Ball lottery draw and members are reminded that tickets (ยฃ2) can be bought for upcoming draws in the Club Shop.

McAleenan Masters The Castle.

Thankfully the improved weather of late has meant that playing conditions at Bright Castle Golf Club and many of the other local golf courses have returned to relative normality and while the preferred lies on fairways only ruling was still in play for the Bright Masters weekend competition on Saturday/Sunday, April 18th/19th, there were no preferred lies whatsoever in play this past weekend, meaning that handicap qualifying competitions are now back in full swing.

Neil McAleenan has been in fine form in the early months of 2026 and that form continued in the aforementioned Bright Masters competition, his superb 41 points total giving him victory in the first Order of Merit event of the year. A countback was needed to separate Colm McIlhome and Gerard Kelly jnr. after both men finished with 38 points, Colm getting the nod for second spot courtesy of a better back nine score. Phil Bullock and Darren Nelson finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Arnold Ennis collected the gross prize. Given the usual high turnout that this and all the other Order of Merit events attract, it was a surprise to see only one birdie two recorded over the weekend but Declan Toman wonโ€™t have minded that one bit, his birdie at the par three seventh hole seeing him pocket the very healthy twos pot dividend. Members are reminded that their six best points totals from the eight Order of Merit events count towards their overall total, with the next event on the schedule being the Spring Trophy on Saturday/Sunday, May 9th/10th.

As mentioned, normal competition playing conditions were re-introduced over the weekend and members and visitors alike are reminded that should only now have โ€˜ball in handโ€™ after marking (or having finished) on the greens, while taking relief from Ground Under Repair, (nearest not nicest point of relief), or when taking a penalty drop for whatever reason. Allan Taylor coped best with conditions in last Saturdayโ€™s stableford competition, his 38 points total enough to give him a clear two points win. Patrick Bell, Darren McConnell and Darren Boyd took the respective second, third and fourth placings after all three finished with 36 points, with Arnold Ennis taking the gross prize.

Unfortunately, Owen Breenโ€™s Ulster Cup side exited this yearโ€™s competition before the second leg of their opening round tie with Scrabo, after a first leg age eligibility infringement. It did seem a little harsh on Owen and his side with the tie evenly poised at 3.5 points each but rules are rules and Owen and co will regroup and have another go next year. After losing out in the Ulster Senior Men Over 50s final last year, Bright Castleโ€™s side begin their bid to go one better when they take on Ardminnan Golf Club at 2pmthis coming Sunday, May 3rd. As ever, any support would be greatly appreciated.

At the time of writing, itโ€™s hoped a Captainโ€™s Charity fourball competition can be arranged for May Day, Monday, May 4th but this will obviously depend on entry numbers and a singles event take place if the team comp doesnโ€™t. Full details will be made available in due course and will appear on the Bright Castle BRS app

Going Potty!

We know itโ€™s not the only one in the country but we had hoped this would have been repaired by now, given it was reported months ago.

Anyone heading to Bright from the Minerstown direction really should try to miss this pothole, along with the several others on that stretch of road.

Itโ€™s just below Bright Church at the junction with the Lisoid Road, hopefully itโ€™ll get sorted soon ๐Ÿซฃ
