๐Ÿ Downpatrick Cricket Club 1849 โ€“ Committee Update

This may be a regular occurrence for some clubs, but for Downpatrick Cricket Club, this week represents something truly significant.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Six matches. Six wins. One club. ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Only a few years ago, the future of cricket in Downpatrick was uncertain. The club faced real challenges in keeping afloat and maintaining the proud traditions built over generations. To now see every team record a victory in the same week is a moment that deserves recognition and celebration ๐ŸŽ‰

While the results on the field have been outstanding, they are only part of the story.

๐Ÿ“š Our school programmes are in full swing
๐Ÿ† Junior coaching continues to grow from strength to strength
๐Ÿ“ˆ Participation numbers are increasing
๐Ÿค We are welcoming new players and families into the club every season

The foundations are being laid for a sustainable and successful future.

The Committee would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this journey ๐Ÿ™, our players, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, parents, supporters and members. Special recognition must go to those who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes over recent years to help rebuild and strengthen the club

Together, we have seen encouraging progress, but we know there is still much more to achieve.

For a club founded in 1849, this week feels like an important milestone ๐Ÿ“. Not because of six victories alone, but because it reflects the direction in which the club is moving.

โœจ The results are encouraging.
๐ŸŒฑ The growth is real.
๐Ÿ”ฎ The future is bright.
A club regaining its yesteryears.
๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š One Club. One Community. One Future.

Downpatrick 4th XI produced another impressive performance in the NCU Development Cup, chasing down a competitive target to defeat Armagh 5th XI by seven wickets.

After losing the toss and being asked to field, Downpatrick faced a strong Armagh batting display led by Raymond Hetherington. The Armagh captain anchored the innings superbly with 66 from 61 deliveries, striking eight boundaries and two sixes.

Supported by Oscar Steenson's well-made 32, Hetherington helped his side reach 149/4 from their 20 overs. Despite the challenging total, Downpatrick's bowlers remained disciplined throughout. Noah Densley, Jimmy Kuriakose and Lijo Mathew each picked up a wicket, while the fielding unit kept the scoring under control during the closing overs.

Chasing 150 to win, Downpatrick got off to a positive start through Jithin Tomy and Lakshmanan Haridas. Although both fell after useful contributions, the visitors maintained the required run rate and reached 80/3 midway through the innings.

The turning point came with an outstanding unbeaten partnership between Gokul Rajan and Arun Geethakumari. The pair combined aggressive stroke play with sensible running between the wickets to take the game away from Armagh.

Gokul was particularly destructive, finishing unbeaten on 40 from just 23 balls, including four fours and three sixes. Arun provided the perfect support, remaining unbeaten on 31 from 25 deliveries with six boundaries.

Their unbroken fourth-wicket stand added 70 runs and guided Downpatrick to victory with 22 balls to spare, completing the chase in just 16.2 overs.

Earlier, Subin Varghese had also played a key role with a quickfire 27 from 18 balls, helping to maintain momentum during the middle overs.

The comprehensive victory highlighted Downpatrick's depth with both bat and ball and continued a successful weekend for the club's teams.

Downpatrick 3rd XI produced an excellent all-round performance to defeat Ardent Blues 5th XI by 75 runs in their NCU Development Cup fixture at Mallusk.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Downpatrick posted an imposing 181/5 from their 20 overs. Openers Jiso Vadakkumpadan Chakko and Renil Xavier laid the foundation with a superb opening partnership of 109.

Renil was the standout performer, striking 48 from 49 balls, including five fours and two sixes, while Jiso contributed a patient 39. The pair absorbed the pressure early and steadily built a platform that put Downpatrick in control.

Following a cluster of wickets in the middle overs, Joshua Jose and Vipin Kumar ensured the innings finished strongly. Joshua remained unbeaten on 23 from just 13 deliveries, while Vipin added an unbeaten 18 from 12 balls as Downpatrick accelerated towards the end of the innings.

Although Ardent Blues were generous with extras, conceding 41 runs, Downpatrick capitalised effectively to post a challenging total.

The reply never gained any real momentum as Downpatrick's bowlers struck regularly throughout the innings. MN Payickattuvelil and Reneesh Panamkoottathil Ravi led the way with two wickets apiece, while Neeraj Machingal Radhakrishnan also claimed two wickets to wrap up the tail.

Ardent Blues lost wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 36/4 before captain Joy Thomas attempted to rebuild the innings with 23. Sinu Simon added 21, but the target proved well beyond reach as Downpatrick maintained control from start to finish.

The fielding effort was equally impressive, with the side taking key catches and effecting crucial run-outs to ensure there was no route back into the game for the home side.

Ardent Blues were eventually dismissed for 106 in 19.4 overs, giving Downpatrick a comprehensive 75-run victory and a deserved place among the Development Cup's early pace-setters.

Downpatrick 2nd XI held their nerve to secure a dramatic one-wicket victory against Dundrum 2nd XI in NCU Junior League 6 at The Meadow, Dundrum.

Having won the toss and elected to bowl, Downpatrick produced a disciplined bowling performance to dismiss the home side for 109 in 25.1 overs.

Despite Matthew Owen top-scoring with 28 and Gordon Lowey contributing 17, Dundrum struggled to build momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. Extras played a significant role in the innings, contributing 40 runs to the total.

Downpatrick's bowlers shared the wickets around, with Anoop Joseph claiming 2 for 22, Arun Geethakumari taking 2 for 10, and Jithin Tomy picking up 2 for 6. Sagar Basheer, Eldho Joseph and Ranju Kizhakkekutt also chipped in with a wicket each as Dundrum were bowled out for a modest total.

The chase, however, proved far from straightforward.

Downpatrick made a positive start, reaching 50 inside eight overs, but Dundrum fought back brilliantly through James Orr and Tom Macauley. Orr's excellent spell of 4 for 25 and Macauley's 3 for 32 reduced the visitors from a comfortable position to 99 for 9, leaving the game finely balanced.

With just one wicket remaining and the match hanging in the balance, Anoop Joseph showed remarkable composure. His unbeaten 15 from 10 balls, including a crucial six, guided Downpatrick towards the target. Sagar Basheer provided valuable support at the other end, finishing unbeaten on 4 as the pair steered their side home with one wicket to spare.

The victory was built on Downpatrick's collective bowling effort and their determination under pressure during a tense chase. While the batting innings had its nervy moments, the lower order held firm to secure a memorable win and valuable league points.

Downpatrick 1st XI secured an impressive 58-run victory over Ardent Blues in the NCU Mercury Senior League 2 clash at The Meadow on Friday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Downpatrick posted a competitive 222/9 from their 40 overs. Despite an early setback with Kranthi Reddy dismissed in the opening over, Amit Rekhi and Humza Khan steadied the innings before Humza anchored the middle order with a composed 46 from 76 deliveries.

Rasheed Rufus Eddy provided momentum with a quick-fire 29 from 21 balls, while Mohammed Agadi contributed a valuable 33. Jacob Vinod then accelerated the scoring with an aggressive 28 from just 17 deliveries. Samuel Irwin's unbeaten 22 ensured Downpatrick finished strongly and reached a challenging total of 222.

Ardent Blues began their chase positively, with Upanish Anil (24) and captain Tony Louis (41) helping their side recover from an early wicket. A 71-run partnership between Louis and Anish Gopalakrishnan (25) kept the visitors in contention as they reached 123/3.

The turning point of the match came when Tony Louis was brilliantly caught by Jacob Vinod. The superb catch broke a dangerous partnership and shifted the momentum firmly in Downpatrick's favour. From that moment, the home side tightened their grip on the game.

Humza Khan then produced a devastating spell with the ball, claiming 5 wickets for just 19 runs from 4.3 overs. His outstanding performance dismantled the Ardent Blues middle and lower order, reducing them from a promising 123/3 to 164 all out in 31.3 overs.

Richu Raju struck early with the new ball, while Samuel Irwin chipped in with two wickets and Rasheed Rufus Eddy added another as Downpatrick completed a well-earned victory.
