to help keep your leather boots in great condition when the weather is wet. . .

Never dry wet boots in front of a fire or next to a radiator as the harsh extremes will damage the leather uppers. Let them dry naturally over time in a room with a consistent temperature. Packing the boots with newspaper will help them to keep their shape and absorb the moisture.

To keep leather butter soft and boots immaculate and shining, it is important that any grease, dirt, dust and sweat is first removed because it can cause the leather to split and crack. There are many products on the market designed specifically for this task, but saddle soap and warm water will do the job perfectly well. Never be tempted to use a household cleaner, because it will strip the leather of any moisture.

Before using any cleaning products, first brush off any dry mud – as much as possible – before removing any stubborn dirt with a damp cloth. It’s important that this is not too wet, to avoid saturating the leather. Once cleaned, leave the boots to dry before applying a conditioner to help feed the leather and replace its natural oils. Again, there is a wide range of conditioning products available, many of them with a lanolin base.

Leave the boots for as long as you can – ideally, for about 24 hours – to allow the leather to soak in the moisture, before polishing them with a good-quality wax shoe polish. This will help to bring a gleaming gloss and prevent future scratches.

Don’t forget the zip, either. Use a soft brush to remove dust and débris from the teeth, using a little water if necessary, before adding an application of zip lubricant.
