Clearly visible rip current today in Spanish Point. Very sudden depth change where waves stop breaking and a strong pull. Nice day, no wind and small waves, a tease!

Channel Swimmers are LUNATICS! WHY!?!? Read why; 🤯

More people have climbed Mt Everest than swam across the English Channel with a failure rate of more than 80%. It’s a whopper 42Km crossing in straight line, but with tidal flow it’s really MUCH more. And let’s face it, only the real mad ones take on the challenge!

I’ve been lucky enough to coach for her channel crossing attempt which took place yesterday. The vast amount of training, hard work and discipline she poured into preparation was nothing short of incredible. Covid, pool closures and new business ventures were NO obstacle for this lady, she trained and prepared with rigour.

We left Dover yesterday at 4am, expecting to be in France 18 hours later. I’ve never seen Sarah swim with such pace and form, she was on fire. 6hr’s in, we expected Sarah would complete the swim in approx 14 hours much faster than expected. However, swimming so close to the boat in bouncy conditions meant she swallowed gallons of salt water and began to feel extremely unwell.

I’ll spare all of the gory details, but despite Sarahs best efforts and a lot of persuading it became necessary to abort the crossing. After cruising into French water (well over half way) and swimming over 25KM it was devastating to see the attempt come to an end. It was a tough blow for something outside of our control to bring Sarah’s crossing to an end.

Putting a lot of emphasis the last couple of weeks on the coaching side of Cahill Aquatics (which is why there has been a lack of emphasis on safety), and I’m lucky to be working with a couple of channel swimmers already. We all learned a huge amount during this channel crossing attempt, I’m already thinking about what we can improve for Sarah’s next attempt, and how I can maximise the likelihood of success for CA athletes.

6 HR SWIM, NO WETSUIT. 14KM. ⭐️

6 hours is a LONG time to be in the water, especially with no suit. And 14KM swim is phenomenal in early May.

And of course a qualification for her channel crossing in June. Incredible performance from . Sarah kept the most positive attitude throughout the swim, held solid pace, and NEVER complained about the cold once. Really shows what is possible when a passion to achieve a goal drives performance, and of course months of consistent training. Delighted to be involved in your journey Sarah, 7 weeks to go! A very proud coach! ☺️

A quick guide on how to avoid a rip current. 🤗 I think this is going to be very important information to know this summer, going to be a busy one for Irish beaches! Please SHARE! 😃

RIP CURRENT ; What is it?

A lot of people are BLISSFULLY UNAWARE of the sheer DANGER that rip currents pose! They are essentially rivers of water moving out to sea, caused by the recycling of waves energy.

Rip Currents are silent killers on beaches all over the world and Ireland is NO different. A rip current will quickly sweep you off your feet, into deep water and continue to relentlessly drag you out to sea.

Commonly named incorrectly as rip tides, holes, drags, “the pull”. As a lifeguard in Lahinch for example, at least 80% of the rescues (average 150 rescues over the summer) we did every season were as a direct result of a swimmer/surfer caught in a rip current, and last year was much higher.

As an example, 1 in 4 Australians will be caught in a rip during their lifetime and on average over 200 people drown as a result of a rips every 10 years (we don’t have these sorts of stats in Ireland)!

Coming into what will inevitably be an EXTREMELY busy summer on Irish beaches, it is important that everyone becomes aware of Rip Currents and finds out how to avoid them, and what to do if caught in one. STAY TUNED for more!

What goes up, must come down. What comes in, must go back out.

Essentially rip currents are the recycling of the waves energy and water. If there are waves (no matter how small) there is 1000% a rip current.

Waves move towards the beach with speed, energy and huge volumes of water. Once the wave reaches the beach, this water must somehow get back out to sea. The water makes its way across the beach though a feeder channel looking for its way back out. This is when a rip current is formed, it is a river flowing out to sea.

More to come in the video.

Can you spot the rip current?!? 🙋

There is a lot more going on in this photo than just a beautiful sunset. Despite the dreamy scene, the rip current in this photo is a potential killer to the unsuspecting swimmer.

New video coming soon on rip currents. We’ll be doing a big deep dive into what rip currents are and how to spot them. I’ll then be making another video about how to avoid them, and what to do if you find yourself in one! 🤗
