Huemul Circuit - Day 2
Packed up & set off around 8.30am!! It was a super windy night so didn’t sleep on account of the noise & being slapped by the tent all night 😆
We found a stone arrow straight out of the camp spot & proceeded to go along the wrong track for 1 1/2 hrs scrabbled across a ridiculously steep slope until we finally decided it was not the way! Re looked at arrow which clearly pointed up the hill NOT along!!!
Climbed up from 897m at camp over our first mountain pass to reach 1415m at Paso Viento (windy pass) which lived up to its name for sure!! 💨
So in between gusts of wind & snow we made fairly good progress! The top of the pass was stunning, a few patches of snow still holding on and 2 beautiful lakes! As we continued to the edge of the pass the southern Patagonia ice fields came into view. Like nothing we’ve ever seen before! Felt like we were in an episode of lonely Planet!! The ice is vast, visible from space it’s so big! 350sq km, the worlds 3rd largest fresh water reserve!
So after staring in awe for sometime, We tackled the descent, steep with loose rocks. You just have to squat or sit down when a gust of wind hits you!!
The rest of the way we followed alongside the ice field, the going was easier so we cld enjoy the views a bit as we went! After 8 1/2hrs we reached camp area paso del viento, which had a little tin shelter. Another windy night, although it’s starting to feel normal now!

Huemul Circuit -Day 4
The day started with a giant saucepan of porridge & dulche de leche!! Lovely!
Set off around 7am, was a long walk back to El Chalten, the weather was still good, just a lot cloudier today.
This was our longest day, around 25km! We did lose the will slightly as the only food we had left for the day was a carrot!
We eventually arrived at our 2nd tyrolean river crossing! The lovely Mike (from Boston) was ever gracious & waited for us both to harness up & cross ahead of him!
The last 6km was probably the hardest part as we had a gale force head wind to battle through, no food & very tired legs!!! But we made it back to town - El Chalten & took great delight in reporting back to the rangers office alive!!! Especially to the less than encouraging lady ranger we registered with initially!!
We ate the biggest pizza we could find & tried to take in everything we’d experienced the past 4 days!! We went to bed feeling very humbled, hugely accomplished & slightly overwhelmed by the scale & beauty of the mountains we were lucky enough to hike through!!

Huemul Circuit - Day 3
After a mega breakfast of porridge & dulche de leche - can totally recommend!! we left 7am, still following alongside of the ice field. Crossed a few streams, the route got narrower & steeper as we started the climb up our 2nd pass - paso Huemul!
The best views really do follow the hardest climbs! We had the towering peaks of the Huemul to our left, the ice field behind & to our right & we looked forward onto lenga tree covered slopes that led down to the giant Lake Viedma with a whole range of icebergs floating on its surface.
The descent was 600 vertical metres over 1200m horizontal ie bloody steep!!!! Our saving grace were the trees that lined the route down! Just had to swing from one tree to the next!! Brilliant fun! Needed to use a rope to get down one section as it was ridiculously steep! We emerged from the trees unscathed, just very dusty from sliding around on the very dry soil & rock! The 4 boys also walking the route treated it as a downhill ski trac, just with dirt not snow! They left us in a massive cloud of dust as they slid past scarily fast!! All seemed to survive tho, except for a very bent walking pole!! Our camp spot was nestled in a patch of trees just off the beach of lake Viedma! We sat & watched the mesmerising icebergs until the sun all but disappeared! We saw one roll over - v exciting! Had a paddle in the freezing cold water, with little bits of iceberg washing into your ankles!
Had a gourmet dinner of smash & tuna & wished we’d brought more chocolate - it went on day 1!
A sheltered & wind free night in the tent - total luxury!!
Fell asleep feeling like some of the smelliest (cheesy feet & sweaty pack filled the tent) but luckiest people there are 🙂

Day 1 - Huemul Circuit 🏔⛺️
Set off from El Chalten & headed to Laguna Toro, fairly easy going today! Walked for approx 11 miles (5 1/2 hrs) to first camping spot, arrived mid afternoon, we were on a roll so decided to keep walking and make for next camp!
Passed Laguna Toro, fed by the glacier we were soon to cross!
First we had to use a tyrolean crossing (zip line)over the river! We luckily arrived at the same time as some v helpful Brazilian mountaineers 👍 so we got our harnesses on & they helped us pully our packs over then us!! Was all v successful given that no one could understand a word the other was saying 😆
We pressed on towards the Rio Tunel glacier! Slipped our way down the icy slope and there we were stood on a glacier!! It was giant and had huge crevices running across it!! There was plenty of debris on the surface so we didn’t have any trouble walking across it! Spent a while taking it all in & taking thousands of photos!!
We climbed up & up before eventually finding our camping spot for that first night! Arrived 8pm very ready for dinner & bed!! The weather was truly Patagonian & we had a very windy night, I spent much of it convinced the next gust would be the end of our tent!
Happy to report the tent was bloody fab, surprisingly bendy!!!
