Royal status was granted in 1906 by King Edward VII and Royal Dornoch remains one of just 66 clubs worldwide with the Royal title. Its first professional was Donald Ross, who was born in Dornoch and went on to become one of the finest golf architects, designing courses in America, Canada and Cuba. Royal Dornoch is a private members’ club but has, since its inception, welcomed visitors from across the world to enjoy the Championship Course, ranked No.5 in the world and No.1 in Scotland by Golf Digest in 2016, and the adjacent Struie Course, also ranked among the Top 50 links courses in the UK & Ireland. Honorary members include two-time Masters champion, Ben Crenshaw, 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie and five-time Open Championship winner, Tom Watson, who said Royal Dornoch was "the most fun I ever had playing golf”.

Born on this day in 1821 - Old Tom Morris.

In 1886, he was invited to extend Royal Dornoch from nine holes to eighteen, crafting a course that still feels as natural today as it did then.

Using the existing dunes and raised plateaus, Old Tom positioned greens on the land’s high points, creating the distinctive plateau surfaces that define the Championship Course.

Demanding approaches. Elevated targets. Miss them and the challenge only deepens.

By letting the Highlands terrain provide the defence, he left behind something timeless, unspoiled, and endlessly compelling.

A true pioneer. A lasting legacy.

The bond between Royal Dornoch and Pinehurst just keeps getting stronger!

We were thrilled to welcome Pinehurst Police Chief Glen Webb and his family during their recent holiday to the Highlands.

Honoring the historic connection forged by legendary golf architect Donald Ross, Chief Webb presented special Police Medallions to Royal Dornoch general manager Neil Hampton, Provost of Dornoch and community council chair, Catherine Macangus, and Alison Davies, chair of the Historylinks Museum.

As we welcome our American friends for the 2026 season, this kind gesture is a wonderful reminder that great golf and community spirit know no borders.
