Surrey Bike Park

Surrey Bike Park www.surreybikepark.co.uk Surrey Bike Park will be a unique venue, that creates a new customer experience with its focus on ‘progression’.

By progression, we have defined this to include improving rider engagement, individual skills, performance, health, confidence and enjoyment. A carefully designed, high quality, well-built site that has many areas to learn and explore. The park will not be a trail centre but a progression park that is inclusive, social and exciting. This will attract riders wanting a place to try out new skills, a

place to session and build confidence ready to take to the trail centres and beyond. Surrey Bike Park will be packed with as many feature areas as possible to enable flow when riding trails. We will also be actively coaching riders to develop their skills and support social inclusion in the sport. Many individuals stop participation in sport because they reach a plateau in enjoying and developing their skills. This park will provide a beacon to individuals of all ages and abilities to enlarge participation, engagement and enjoyment. The park will be a fully staffed site 6 days a week. We will be open from Tuesday to Sunday with Monday closed for park maintenance. Hours will be based on the season’s light availability. Day passes will be available online from our website. There is also various annual membership options for adults and children. SBP will offer a range of discounted passes, including after school access, sibling discounts, student discounts and people within the public sector. Our park will be accessible to everyone. We will have locally sourced refreshments on site with a picnic / seating area.

We wish to reiterate that the intention of the Trail Academy proposal for Dorking West was, from the very start, to turn a little-used, neglected and dangerous piece of land into something that was safe, cared-for, beneficial to the local area and, most importantly, stainable for the future of cycling.

It is, therefore, with heavy heart that the Trail Academy wishes to withdraw from the project at Dorking West.

We remain committed to providing the local area with a bike park that is well-planned, fully maintained, safe, clean, designed and built by an experienced team of local riders that will enable progression, learning and fun to take place. We want to build something special; something that will be used by generations to come. It will be inclusive to all and it will be a real community hub that will benefit the community.

Cycling for some is a hobby, for some a passion and for some a profession: the success of the Olympics only highlights the importance of initiatives such as this.

It has become increasingly clear that the proposals for the Dorking West site will not meet the needs of the community as we wish it to. We do not want to create tension in the local area; our goal is to bring people together. We do not want to compromise the beautiful, natural environment; our goal is to work in harmony with nature and leave minimal carbon footprint. We do not want to compromise our design ideas to placate people who have no intention of using the park: our goal is to build a bike park for riders of all abilities, all ages and all genders. Our goals have not changed.

We have always been open, honest and have purposely refrained from engaging in petty politics and tabloid sensationalism. We always welcome advice, constructive criticism and challenging questions. We have always been transparent with information regarding the site and how we plan to allow everyone to use it. The constant barrage of mis-information has been damaging to this project: the simple facts have always been available online or by simply getting in touch with us.

We wish nothing but the best of luck to group that decides to take up the challenge of turning Dorking West - a space that has sat derelict for the last 15 years - into something that the community deserves. We would, of course, be more than happy to offer our professional advice and to assist where we can – it is sad that this project has been lost within a political battle but we are proud to have pushed this facility to the forefront of community improvements and sincerely hope that a volunteer group succeeds in maintaining it and delivering a site that the community deserves for many years to come.

The Trail Academy appreciates all the people who support Surrey Bike Park and we assure you that we will continue to search for a site that will allow us to create something special.

Watch this space!

We would like to offer our followers an update on the proposed project for the site in Dorking close to Dorking West Station.

We have in the most part refrained from making public comments regarding the project to avoid sensationalising issues or creating tension within the community. We have, however, decided to release the following statement:

The intention of the Trail Academy proposal was, from the very start, to turn a little-used, neglected and dangerous piece of land into something that is safe, cared-for and beneficial to the local area. This private investment does require users to pay to use the site but our financial planning was always designed to cover building and running costs. We believe that children and locals paying less than £2 per week via the membership option, for access 6 days every single week, is fantastic value for something that is designed to support progression, be staffed and be safe.

Concessions for low-income families and those with particular personal circumstances was also always in the plan. There has been considerable misinformation over this and we wish to make it crystal clear. Likewise, we are also always keen to work with local bodies and organisations to ensure that the bike park properly meets the needs to the community it is designed for. Mountain biking is in its very essence a sport that embraces nature, works in harmony with wildlife and leaves minimal carbon footprint. We have designed a bike park with this very much in mind.

Despite the ongoing delay in making a final decision, we remain positive and optimistic that we can provide a service that will be both beneficial to Dorking and will have longevity. The current Dorking West site is not properly planned (despite the initial good idea some decades ago), not properly maintained (despite the good intentions of some local residents) and is not designed to provide riders of all abilities with a safe and secure place to develop skills, have fun and socialise.

What we hope to build is not going to last a few years until interest wanes but to be something special to be used by generations to come. It will be inclusive for all: men, women, teens and children. It will be a real community hub that will really benefit the community.

We are very aware that people will have different opinions about any project that will take place in their community. We have always been open, honest and have purposely refrained from lowering positive and healthy dialogue into inaccurate and misleading arguments.

The Trail Academy really does appreciate all the people who support the project, who offer assistance, who ask challenging questions, who ensure transparency and who want the best for the local area.

Thank you.
