Alone, or lonely?
Being alone and feeling lonely are not the same thing.

ℹAlone – a physical state where you are physically by yourself.

ℹLonely – an emotional state, often of sadness, where you are feeling isolated and/or disconnected from others – sometimes even when they’re right next to you.

You can be alone without feeling lonely. Some people are OK spending lots of their time on their own. Some can feel lonely even when around other people.

➡Sometimes we are happy to be by ourselves, and other times we wish for the company of others. Sometimes a bit of both. We all manage our emotions differently and have different needs and wants.

Note that loneliness isn’t the same thing as social isolation. Loneliness happens when you feel distressed when you’re alone, while social isolation is the lack of regular interactions with other people.

Think riding is the whole story? Not quite. Horses have a funny way of teaching you that the real lessons often happen before you even get in the saddle.

They need feeding, watering, grooming, clean stalls, picked hooves, checked tack, and plenty of attention. Rain or shine, tired or busy, the horse is still waiting like, “Lovely excuses. Now, where’s my hay?” 🥕

Horses teach patience when they spook at a bucket they saw yesterday. They teach humility when you clean a stall and they immediately “decorate” it again. 💩 They teach time management when they roll in mud five minutes before a lesson and suddenly you become a professional speed-groomer. 🧽

But they also reward responsibility in the best ways: a soft nuzzle, a calm ride, a trusting look, or simply not stepping on your foot that day. Small victories count. 😅

So yes, horses teach responsibility through mud, muck, early mornings, and endless chores. But they also teach dedication, kindness, confidence, and love.

Behind every good rider is someone who showed up, did the work, and remembered the treats. 🍎

Progress does not always look peaceful 🐴💛

Sometimes it looks like trying again after a wobble.

Sometimes it looks like learning something the hard way.

Sometimes it looks like needing more time than you thought you would.

Sometimes it looks like going backwards before your brain and body feel safe enough to move forwards again 🌱

In trauma-informed work, we have to be really careful not to measure progress only by what looks neat from the outside.

A young person who speaks less one week is not be “going backwards” 🫶

A client who needs the same activity repeated is not “stuck” 🔁

A child who struggles after doing well is not be “attention-seeking” or “not trying” 💛

They may be processing.
They may be testing safety.
They may be tired.
They may be learning that connection does not disappear when things get difficult.

Horses remind us of this beautifully 🐴✨

Some days, the relationship feels soft and easy.

Other days, there is hesitation, tension, uncertainty, or a very firm “no thank you” from the pony department 😂🐴

That does not mean the work has failed.

It means we slow down.
We listen more carefully.
We stop forcing the finish line.
We notice the tiny changes 🌿

The quieter breath.
The softer shoulders.
The moment they come back after walking away.
The first time they ask for help.
The first time they say, “I don’t know,” instead of pretending they are fine.

That is progress too 💛

At Equimotional, we believe growth should be measured with curiosity, not judgement.

Because healing is rarely tidy.

And honestly, neither are horses 🐴😂
