Bruce Woodcock (1920–1997) was one of Britain’s most celebrated heavyweight boxers of the 1940s. Born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, he rose from a railway worker and amateur champion to become the British, British Empire, and European Heavyweight Champion during the years immediately following World War II.

Woodcock first gained national attention as an amateur, winning the prestigious ABA Light-Heavyweight Championship in 1939. He turned professional in 1942 and quickly established himself as one of Britain’s most exciting punchers, combining aggressive attacking boxing with a devastating overhand right hand.

His breakthrough came in July 1945 when he defeated Jack London to win the British Heavyweight Championship. Over the next five years he dominated the British heavyweight scene, adding the British Empire and European titles to his collection. At the height of his career, Woodcock was regarded as Britain’s leading heavyweight and one of Europe’s most feared punchers.

One of the defining moments of his career came in 1950 when he challenged American heavyweight Lee Savold for a version of the World Heavyweight Championship. Although Woodcock was stopped in the fourth round, the bout represented the pinnacle of his career and made him one of the few British heavyweights of his era to compete on the world stage
