Mid week ride to Happy Café (Sandtoft)

It was a nice morning! I arrived a tad before 9am to find 4 riders ready to go. Well not Trish, her bike was still on the tow bar, and not Karen she was late. The others were, well, me, Michelle, Robin and Dave. Welcome onboard Dave new members always welcome. But you didn’t need to make your mark at the end of the ride!

So we 6 set off for the dreaded traffic lights, taking to the footpath to get there such was the traffic. We found a gap and crossed over and up the Bawtry Road which seemed traffic free after the free for all at the lights. Bawtry led to Austerfield then Finningley.

Not sure where but somehow Karen got in front. That’s the Karen who only knows how to go a bit faster! So we went a bit faster into Wroot and along that long road (idle bank) that nobody really likes unless the wind is behind them. It might have been but there wasn’t much of it so it felt as though it might have been a head wind.

We arrived at the happy café I pretty good time- Karen hadn’t tired at all! Although it felt warm enough we went inside, found a couple of tables and got on with refuelling. The entertainment was provided by an elderly pop group who all sang a different tune. The gist of it was that the café wasn’t big enough and they couldn’t reorganise the tables to their liking. The ones who didn’t know the words ordered and got on with eating main meals. The others caught on slowly and more food followed.

But you can only stand so much so we set off. Karen knew I was likely to tire so eased off the pace a tad as we took the back road and rejoined the Epworth Road at the far end of Benton for our journey home. We had a spot of bother with our hands- to me left is left but for others it might not be- so it was interesting at the traffic lights and we resorted to exaggerating the arms/indicators to make sure them others knew it was “the other right” ie left!

From there we wandered along to Owston Ferry then on to Graiselound and Westwoodside. It was Westwoodside where my neck ache got to the point where I couldn’t ignore it (it’s an age thing - won’t affect you) so I stopped for some magic pills - legal, honest. Oh and an energy gel.

Michelle had stopped with me but the others were gone! We kept thinking they would notice but it was an age before Robin appeared to see where we were. But we caught up eventually and carried on to Misson and then Bawtry.

The road was clear in Bawtry so we made it as a group the the turning towards Tickhill and around the junction. From there it’s a straight forward trip back to base. Err, no, only if you stick together!

We did notice we were a bit spread out but thought nothing of it - but we should have. We progressed slowly until we found somewhere safe to stop (Plumtree undustrial estate). And we waited and the we waited a bit more before Robin gave in and went back to see what was afoot.

He was forever! We were considering what to do when he reappeared alone to tell us Dave had lost his crank arm! Did he clip in or did he use bog standard pedals? I couldn’t remember but we thought he clipped in; we hoped he clipped in. And we carried on! I had to as I had a place I had to be and the others made sure I made it safely (apart from one legged Dave and shepherdess Michelle who had to do there own thing to get home.

Despite all that I had an enjoyable (long) ride and hopefully Dave on his first ride as a member did too.

Blue ride to Retford

No wind, no rain and a promising outlook; all looking good. We were four - Michelle Greco, Lynda Bardsley, Mick Devine and me. With no plan in place the other three trusted me to weave a route and still end up in Retford!

Anything to avoid “the” traffic lights we set off the other way. Half way up Malpass Hill we turned left. It’s a rotten road but hopefully Robin won’t read this as we always complain when he chooses it! But ewe went and we complained. On the outskirts of Styrrup we turned towards Oldcotes stopping opposite the Manor Farm café before heading for Blyth.

It was nice easy cycling and not marred by loads of cars. In Blyth we went east towards Ranskill just squeezing through the lights near what used to be the Charnwood Hotel and went on to turn right in the village heading towards Retford. But not for long! the route took us left past Daneshill Nature reserve and along into Lound where, right again. we turned towards Sutton cm Lound and onto the Great North Road. Rather than using the main road we went through the industrial estate before finally meeting shed loads of cars on the big roundabout.

But we made it safely and were in the café and had ordered when Diana arrived to join us for snacks and the return leg. Having finished we went out side to get ready for setting off when Andy Singleton and Mic, Debbie’s Dad, arrived. After a quick chat and photo they went inside and we set off for home.

Not necessarily the fastest or shortest route but there were roads we hadn’t ridden. We went along the cycle track as far as it went then on the road before turning down Green Mile Lane. Very little wind but what there was seems helpful. we were soon in Barnby Moor and with a couple of left turns were heading back to Blyth. It was only After we passed the Charnwood that the first of two incidents occurred. The first was a black transit man who decided to try to push us into the side. He wasn’t successful! We stopped next to the Northern Garden Centre to catch our breath and discuss “things”.

“Things” included the state of the world and whether we needed a second stop at Manor farm. But on our way again we forgot whatever worried us and enjoyed the open road, turning right in Oldcotes to head back towards Malpass Hill. Michelle decided to stretch her legs so naturally we all followed getting well and truly spread out along the road. But we rejoined and went along the way. Mick was going to take Any Hill Lane to go home and the rest of us were going to go via the Mill Pond to the Cricket Club.I paused in the entrance to the football field to say goodbye to Mick the rest indicated right to take the turn. The elderly couple in the blue car ignored the outstretched arm and overtook at a point where they were about to turn. Good luck played a part or they were have been flattened! Unfortunately my rear view camera didn’t capture the incident!

Back at the Cricket Club we chatted a while before making out way home. A good ride in good conditions. Thanks everybody see you next Sunday I hope.

Blue ride to Netherthorpe

A quiet day; little breeze, little traffic and no rain. There were already a number of sick notes by the time I got to the Cricket Club but Mick was already there followed quickly by Kevin and I had seen Michelle taking her bike off the car round the corner. Rob was going to meet us in Firbeck. A fine plan, except!

Except Mick got a puncture coming in and was “near the church” would we wait. WhatsApp is a wonderful tool! Rob saw the post and added 15 minutes to our meet up time in Firbeck. Michelle went to find him - and failed but realised it was cold and went back to her car for gloves. Mick arrived so we all set off to find Michelle!

Somehow we set off! Losing Kevin and Michelle at the Buttercross! It could only get better-and did! We headed south and then up Thornbury hill and met up with Rob on the way down. The route took us to Firbeck, Letwell, Gildingwells and Woodsetts. It’s a bit twisty and difficult from there into Shireoaks but light traffic helped. The state of the road through the village was in Tesla need of a facelift.

As we travelled along the backroads towards the airfield we caught up with a large group of cyclists who were also going to “our” café.

We found seats and joined the queue mixed up amongst the guys from Bolsover and district cycling club. They left first and we followed after a prolonged chat.

We headed out of the airfield café and found our way along lovely gentle downward slopes towards Rhodesia and then along to Carlton. We stopped at a junction and Rob and Mick decided to turn off in Oldcotes. Kevin was going to leave us to go back along Blythgate lane.

But before any of that we continued through Langold and Oldcotes at which point only Michelle and I were left. And that only lasted to the cooperative shop (millstone) when I had to find my way home alone!

A nice easy ride guys, thank you. But we lost brownie points for lack of photo! This one is here in case you didn’t see it.

Midweek ride to Leger lakes
I was late! Mick and Robin were there chatting away, Karen (the sensible one) was waiting in her car, windows up until we were all assembled. Tricia and Michelle were not much later. And by then it was 10 past 9, so we set off.

Robin had a plan so we decided to go with it, and headed for Harworth, Serlby and Ranskill. It was one of those good days; for me at least! I set off a little faster than usual, but it felt fine, and we kept more or less together. Mick kept to the back and made sure we were all there.

But we stopped at Scrooby top for a breather and Michelle decided to do a different route but kept with us into Ranskill and then went left to Mattersey. We went right!

Our route took us to the crossroads in Ranskill then on to Blyth. Due to the ride leaders failure to shout “left” I went right. And when the shout came I headed into the pub yard with Karen! After a bit of pavement cycling we caught up and continued along towards Worksop.

Not far along we turned right along the Worksop road and the towards Carlton. Through the village to Gildingwells, on to Dinnington, Throapham before heading into Laughton and the café.

The ride home was direct - Firbeck, Thornbury hill lane, blythgate lane and into the village by way of the back roads. A good shortish sort of ride with good company!

Midweek two loop ride to Manor Farm

It was cold, not quite freezing but two degrees is pretty close so I didn’t really expect any great number of riders. Seven was fantastic in the circumstances. And we didn’t see any ice, the bright sunshine saw to that!

We were: Karen, Michelle, Mick, Robin, Kevin, Adrian and me. All looking to get warmed up. We set off and only got just passed the Buttercross before realising we had lost Kevin and Michelle. I went back but they arrived having had to dally while Michelle got properly dressed!

Along we went, round the mill dam, on to Oldcotes then right along to a little rest opposite the end of Kidd Lane. “Little” is pushing it a bit, our man at the back,, Kevin, had spotted a problem! Adrian’s rear brake were not releasing. He was struggling quietly but just about hanging on. We (Robin really) got his tool kit out, fiddled a lot and got it about right.

We carried on eventually getting to Dinnington and typical of a Robin ride we wandered, backstreet wise, through the houses. Then out to Woodsetts, Gildingwells and across to Carlton where we did another Robin thing through the houses.

But we got back to the main road and headed north through Langold and on to Oldcotes. A few minutes later we were in the café, seated and waiting to be served. It might have been slow but we were chatting and didn’t notice. Coffee and buns went down well and we were soon outside getting ready for off.

But before that we noticed that Santa had left his sleigh outside (if he saws inside having coffee he was in disguise) so we borrowed it for our ride photo.

We set off towards Styrrup (Michelle went on towards where Michelle went) then a couple of right turns and we were into the Serlby park area. Still chatting animatedly we turned north again and thought we were passing through Scrooby but then Robin did it again and we nipped in and out!

But then we headed straight on to Bawtry, queued at the lights and turned towards Tickhill. I say “towards” but it’s an overused word! We did a Martin thing and went to see Andy Singleton to collect Mick’s kit order. He did offer us coffee but hot showers were more attractive so we declined. After a chat and a photo we set off. Mick looked a bit pregnant with his kit stuffed up his jumper. We did a Robin thing though and went through Harworth and arrived back at the traffic lights before a final Robin thing and went down Paper Mill Lane and over the motorway bridge arriving back at the cricket club still happy and chatting!

Blue ride To North Anston

The Plan A was to go to Auckley (on the road) but it didn’t work out like the Plan! Plan B was to take us to the Butterfly farm. But before that we met with the hint of drizzle and the promise of more. We were 4 but the red ride was down to 2 so 4 was impressive.

More impressive was Michelle’s roady, Angelo, who prepped her bike, got it off the car watched without comment as she cycled round the car park making sure he had the gears adjusted properly. No Tutting either. Well done on all counts Angelo!

Rain jackets on we set off. “We” being Kevin, Mick, me and Michelle. There wasn’t much wind which made up for the drizzle and we headed round the mill dam to Oldcotes, Letwell and beyond. Beyond being Gildingwells, and Woodsetts before heading up the slope to the Butterfly Farm. After very little discussion we went inside.

I admit it the thought of posing for the outdoor photo wasn’t attractive so we did it indoors. After suggesting we all smile, Michelle couldn’t find the camera - as you can see, But she does have a great sense of humour.

It might have been almost not raining but not quite so inside was attractive! We ate, drank and went outside to dry off our saddles before the return leg.

It stopped raining! We even had glimpses of sunshine. Along Common Lane and Long Road we went. Into Brampton en le Morthen and on to Thurcroft where we turned and went to Laughton en le Morthen (must investigate why “en le Morthern”).

We actually went passed, yes passed without stopping the cafe at Leger Lakes - Michelle wasn’t hungry! Before long we were through Firbeck and on to the Maltby Oldcotes road. Michelle wanted a longer ride so headed off East while we, now 3, went up Thornbury hill towards Tickhill.

Kevin want to avoid Any Hill so turned left at the Travellers Rest Mick and I stopped for a chat before he went up Apy Hill and I went downhill for a shower. A short ride but Okay in the circumstances.

For those of you just reading “because you can” during our chat Mick told me he had lost a stone since joining us, and even I noticed he seems happier. So if you can’t afford weight Watchers try a local cycle club, preferably TVC, they do a good job
