The upcoming weeks will bring a range of emotions for young academy players & their parents — with retain or release decisions across age groups🥲😢
For many, the news will be positive, and they’ll feel a sense of relief… almost like they can finally relax.
For others, it won’t be what they hoped for. And in that moment, it can feel like their world has come crashing down.
I know this first-hand. I’ve been the one delivering these decisions. People might think it’s easy — it’s not. Telling a young player that their journey at a club is ending, and seeing that emotion, is one of the toughest parts of the role.
But as adults, it’s our responsibility to support and reassure these young people — that they will be okay, and they can continue to love the game.
One “no” doesn’t mean it’s a no forever❌
My advice for parents:
1. It’s not personal
These decisions are never made by one individual. They come from multiple conversations and careful consideration. It’s natural to look for someone to blame in the moment, but it’s important to understand the bigger picture.
2. Don’t rush the next step
There’s often a rush to get signed elsewhere, but that isn’t always the best move. Make sure your child is emotionally ready — setbacks can happen again, and resilience takes time to build. We don’t want to overload them mentally.
3. Focus on strengths
Development areas matter, but standout strengths are what make players unique. Help your child recognise and build on what they do best.
4. Take time to reset
Academy football can be intense and demanding. Use this time to step back, relax, and ensure both you and your child are in the right mindset moving forward.
People experience different situations at different clubs which I can’t speak for but to finish — no release should ever come as a complete shock if communication has been right throughout the season. It’s about guidance, honesty, and giving players opportunities to show themselves.
Football is competitive. These difficult moments can shape stronger, more resilient individuals.
The pain, frustration, and disappointment may be there right now — but keep looking forward.
