DSC 2026 CHAMPIONSHIP – THAT’S A WRAP!
The 2026 Club Championship Finals Day was a huge success featuring eight entertaining matches, plenty of spectators and an amazing meal courtesy of local catering favourite, Troy-Ann’s.
Match 1 - 7th Place. Murray Rowe beat Simon Williams 3-0
This season’s most improved player, Murray got the day off to a fast start, brushing Simon aside with relative ease. This was predicted to be a tight contest but Murray’s accuracy, speed and movement were too much for Simon on the day. We expect Murray to feature in the top-4 next year!
Match 2 – 13th place. Paul Fensom beat Darren Lowry 3-2
A contender for the best match of the day with neither player giving an inch. After the first game went in Paul’s favour 17-15 it was no surprise that every other game was close. At 2-2, 12-all this was still anyone’s match to win but Paul edged it in the end.
Match 3 – 11th place. Stephen Rowe beat David Mather 3-1
Another match that was tough to call in advance but most would have predicted that David would have the edge having won most of their previous games. Stephen however produced his finest squash when it mattered and looked in control throughout. Ultimately his ball striking and accuracy were the difference.
Match 4 – 17th place. Kyle Mackay beat Steve Turnbull 3-2
This might not have been the most technically pure match of the day but was surely the most entertaining. Kyle and Steve put on a great show, both trying to outplay the other, mainly at the front of the court. This was a test Steve’s skill against Kyle’s speed and determination with fitness most likely the telling factor by game 5. A fantastic contest for the spectators.
Match 5 – 9th place. William Spiers beat Anthony Cassidy 3-0
Despite a slow start in game 1, once William found his stride, he was in full control of this battle between former champions. Pre-tournament William was seeded to reach the last-8 but went down in round 1 to Simon Williams so he was determined to at least take 9th place. Games 2 and 3 were one-sided as William did just that.
Match 6 – 5th place. Euan Rae beat Geoff Wears 3-1
Euan started as favourite but Geoff put up some serious resistance in this entertaining tie. At 2-0 Euan was heading for a comfortable win but the wily veteran had other ideas, dug deep and managed to win the third. 3-1 in the end but well played both players!
Match 7 – 3rd place. Ben Dreyer beat David Rennie 3-2
Billed as “The People’s Final” and probably the most anticipated encounter of Finals Day. David’s finesse and control put him 2-0 up and seemingly on course to claim 3rd place after narrowly missing out on a place in the final when Finlay Rowe beat him 3-2 in the semi-final. Ben didn’t give in though. He changed his tactics and won the third game relative easily with his older opponent visibly fading. Ben pushed on in game 4 to take the match to five, living up to that pre-match anticipation. In the end the fifth game was very straightforward and Ben belied his original 5th seed position to claim 3rd place.
Match 8 – Championship Final. Chris Turlik beat Finlay Rowe 3-0
The match for ultimate honours was a repeat of the 2025 final and was destined to be a spectacle given the contrast between the players. Finlay (19 year-old, super fit, lean and fresh from his first season in the Strathclyde University 1st team) was looking to unseat Chris (50-something years old, not as fit, not quite as lean and nearing the end of a long, testing season!) who in turn was looking to win his eighth consecutive club championship. A year on from when Chris beat Finlay with relative ease, this year was far from easy. The ultimate 3-0 scoreline was not reflective of a match where most rallies were evenly contested with Chris’ ball control under pressure from Finlay’s speed and movement. The deciding factor was probably experience as Chris won more of the crucial points in the final stages of each game. At 14-10 in the third game, the championship looked over but Finlay dug deep to get back to 14-13 before Chris clinched it with a drop shot into the nick. With Finlay’s superior fitness, a fourth game would been interesting but it wasn’t to be…this time.
Overall, a fantastic day at Dollar Squash Club. A huge thanks to all those who played and extra thanks for the members who came to support on the day. We are grateful to Troy-Ann's Patisserie for the amazing food and we look forward to the next event!
