Hopton & District Bowls Club

Hopton & District Bowls Club Hopton Bowls Club is a great place to enjoy playing lawn bowls with a superb club house, well priced bar and frequent social events throughout the year.

Hopton Bowls Club owns its own beautifully manicured green and well proportioned club house in the lovely village of Hopton cm Knettishall. We welcome players of all ages and abilities and are always pleased to see new faces. Contrary to popular myth, bowls is not a game for grumpy old men! It is a game which can be enjoyed the first time you walk onto a green, but which can take many years to ma

ster. Bowls doesn't require strength, but rather a good sense of coordination. It is therefore equally open to men, women, old and young. During the summer, we enjoy playing outdoors at our own club and at various other lovely greens in our region. The summer games provide an opportunity to enjoy a competitive outdoor sport, a chance to meet some lovely people and a (usually well priced) glass of something refreshing afterwards. During the winter, we move indoors to play "short mat bowls", a game with an atmosphere more akin to pub skittles - but still requiring skill and concentration. This is played every Tuesday evening, so please feel free to come along to try it. Throughout the year, the club organises and hosts various social events, including this year a car treasure hunt and a stand at our village fete. Be brave - ignore the myths - give bowls a try. But beware.... the bowls bug bites!!!

The Bowler + Novice Tournament due to be hosted at Hopton Bowls Club on Saturday 29th May will be postponed until later in the year.

Whilst the club had wanted to run this tournament in support of the national Bowls England Big Bowling Weekend, continuing concerns re Covid, combined with people understandably wanting to make the most of the first non lockdown Bank Holiday with their families, has required us to cancel this weekend's event.

As the concept of the tournament was very well received however, we will find an alternative date later in the season which is easier for people to attend.

A very proud moment. Rob Capon with Guy and Claire Ransom receiving the Guiness Cup....the first time Hopton have won this in the club's long and illustrious history. Great to see Hopton's name being associated with success once more.
Newcomers are always welcome to join our superb club (new outdoor season starts next April, but short mat played on Tuesday evenings indoors at our club house). Bowls is a great game, playable by all ages and both sexes. It is social, challenging, exciting....simply a really enjoyable sport. Come and join in, but beware THE BOWLS BUG BITES!!!

Superb end season celebration of bowls for a fab team. A superb day of bowling for the Bill White trophy. Marks the end of an excellent season, including achieving runners up spot in our first year in division 1 and winning the Guiness Cup. Most of all though, just thoroughly enjoyable bowling with a great group of people. Well done Hopton Bowls Club...League 1 Champions next year!

With daffodils in bloom, trees in bud and the grass growing it's clear that spring is springing.... and that means it's less than a month until the start of the new outdoor bowling season!

If you've never tried bowls, make this the season that you do. It's a superb game playable by women, men, old, young (and those somewhere in the middle). If you'd like to have a try just contact Mick Elflain, our club secretary, who will be arrange for one (or more) of our members to welcome you at the club, provide you with some appropriately sized bowls to borrow and give you a few starting tips to help you along your way.

The dates for the new bowling season have started to be announced and will be posted on this FB page as we become aware of them.

The fabulous Hopton Bowls team won its league last year and so will be battling with a higher calibre of club than last year.

Have a great season everyone - and enjoy your bowling!

Hopton v West Row 26.6.18
Congratulations to all bowlers forming our Tuesday night team against West Row yesterday evening. We managed a clean sweep, taking the full 7 points to add to our league total.

Highlights of the evening????

Firstly the superb friendly game afforded by the West Row team. I really have to ask what more you could want for than a beautiful summer evening spent with lovely, friendly people engaging in a brilliant outdoor game with drinks and nibbles afterwards. Why would you NOT want to get involved in bowls?

Secondly, the brilliant last end charge from our illustrious Captain and President, Bill Bedord and his trusty team. Having trailed through most of the game, they kept their nerve to win a fantastic 5 shots on the last end to take the lead and provide us with our clean sweep. Full marks for keeping your heads and not giving in.

Thirdly - the Hopton Bowls Green. Having played in sveral county matches, most of which have been away, I can honestly say that our green is one of the very best in the county. Heart felt thanks to Bill, Vic, Martin and Brian for their continuing hard work.

Forwards to the shield match against Hengrave on Thursday - best of luck to all taking part. I believe there may also be another (lesser) sproting event happening that evening. Oh well, that's why God created iPlayer catchup :-)

County Mixed Pairs - Match report

The week ended on a double high for the club thanks to Guy and Claire coming in with some excellent wins in the County Mixed pairs competitions.

Away to Sudbury they faced really tough opposition in Jane and Julian Watson. Jane has played in national finals and devotes herself to playing bowls almost full time. Guy and Claire quickly got the measure of the beautifully manicurred Sudbury green however and by the end of the 12th they were comfortably leading 22 - 2.

Feeling that they had no chance of recovering the situation, Jane Watson elected to throw in the towel after the 12th end. The remaining 3 players did feel that was rather a shame, as win or lose, we play bowls for the enjoyment of the game. Nevertheless, it's gratifying to feel that the calibre of Hopton bowls is such that we can now cower leading teams into submission.

Playing on the afternoon of their wedding anniversary, Guy and Claire then went to St Edmunsbury on Saturday for another mixed pairs match. Their opponents this time were both skilled and focussed (and very experienced). With consistently accurate bowling (and a fair smattering of luck), St Edmundsbury dominated the first 2/3 of the game, with Guy & Claire being 14 - 5 down after 14 ends. Remaining focussed however, and not being willing to give up, Claire and Guy clawed back the deficit to reach 14 - 14 by the 20th end. No pressure! Anniversary celebrations were able to start unmarred, when Guy bowled his final two woods adjacent to the cot to make the final score 16 - 14. A good illustration of why you should never give up when you're down.

So, well done Guy and Claire for keeping the Hopton flag flying and best wishes for success in the forthcoming rounds of the County Cups.
