An introduction to Lucy Williams Equestrian - 25 years coaching experience.
Hi! After 17 years in South Australia, I returned to the UK to continue my equestrian career while still supporting my clients in Australia with one-to-one online coaching sessions and 2 annual trips to hold coaching sessions.
I learnt to ride in Hockwold, Norfolk, at the age of 9. In my teens, I travelled to New South Wales on a working holiday visa to a yard north of Sydney and Tasmania. I taught in North Yorkshire for a number of years in my twenties, and I gained my BHS qualifications, I'm a level 5/ BHSI, at 3 prestigious centres in the UK, Wellington Riding (BHSAI), Ingestre Stables (BHSII) and Yorkshire Riding Centre (BHSI). The formal qualifications are very important to me but the natural ability to connect with someone and share that love of horses is even more important. Competition riding for me was predominantly Eventing, Team Chasing, and latterly Dressage.
In 2009, I migrated to South Australia and gained citizenship. My years in Australia were a huge developmental experience for me; I built a successful freelance coaching business, met some amazing people, and I'm lucky enough to travel back twice a year to coach my clients. I love my life of horses and coaching chosen so many years ago. It never feels like work when I'm coaching beginners to seasoned competition riders, young or old, all 3 disciplines and ground work.
My particular speciality is rider Biomechanics, using Ride With Your Mind (RWYM) techniques of Mary Wanless, I am an accredited level 2 coach. Coaching has to be a positive experience for both horses and riders. If a feeling or an idea isnβt grasped, I look for different paths until both horses and riders feel the positive differences. Being supportive, kind, listening and making this sport fun are very important to a good coach.
When there is a strong working relationship between coach and client, they become a team. It's important to me to empower my clients and I want them to feel comfortable to send me test sheets, video information, and answer their questions; training with others is particularly beneficial when discussing training ideas. My objective is consistent progression and learning for both horse and rider with a positive, uplifting, kind approach. Riders should come away from sessions feeling motivated, goal driven, with a can-do attitude.
When I was a student and now as an experienced coach, I still want to know what, when, how, and why.
I cover East Anglia, locally Norfolk and Suffolk, and Nationally.
