Winfarthing Rifle Club

Winfarthing Rifle Club A small friendly club shooting precision .22" small-bore rifle in the prone position (lying down) ov for full members, with all equipment available to borrow.

Based in the centre of Winfarthing village, we welcome both new and experienced shooters of all ages. The range is open Tuesday mornings and evenings (training session), and Thursday evenings. Costs start at £2 per session for provisional members, rising to £50 p.a. Full training is given for anyone trying the sport for the first time, while more experienced shots can also get high level coaching.

Club members can take part in individual and team competitions at club, county and national levels. Some members just enjoy shooting for the fun and the friendship, while others also compete in National competitions and at International level. We are a mixed bunch of all ages and look forward to seeing you. Juniors (aged under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will become an Associate member.

So whats been happening at the range?
well, we have been gradually adding more improvements that we need to get the sign off from the inspector, this includes:
- new 25 yard target frames,
- re-profiling the backstop and increasing the height,
- adding more batons to the fence to make sure there are no gaps where the wood has shrunk,
- removing the large tree stump on the left hand side
- and plently of other little odd jobs!

Hoping to get the go ahead in the next few weeks - so watch this space!

Fencing works .... done!
The new fence on both sides is now finished. Working next to the bridge had advantages and disadvantages - having the bridge to stand on helped a great deal, but also made it awkward to get down low and dig the holes..... not to mention the many large flints we had to break up at the bottom of the holes!
Dave C was glad he brought the wheelbarrow along - it carried away a couple of loads of foliage before being re-purposed as a recliner!

so what next?
well, we need to take some measurements and offically confirm that we meet the specifations for rhe surrounding banks (which we dont expect to be a problem). After that, the range inspector will come out and "sign off" on all the work, and give us the go ahead for benchrest shooting!
Stay tuned........

One fence done, one to go!
with the final post concreted in, we were able to install the last few panels and clad all the concrete posts. So the left side fence is now complete, next will be the one on the right!

And we're back working on the range!
This week we started installing the new fencing down the left hand side. With the holes dug and posts concereted in, those with wellies were sent into the stream to install the longer panels.
At the end of the day, we made sure to leave a complete fence-line in place, so the club can still open on the normal evenings.

Another productive day at Winfarthing!
Today the team were aligning the internal doors & fitting the 32 "stays" to keep them open, fitting the lower board at the front, adding some internal trims, and of course yet MORE staining!

It's been great to have so many members come and help out, not just at the range but behind the scenes at Tim's workshop & Parrot furniture!
With most of the main building work complete, we hope to be back shooting soon!

Doors Doors Doors!
Today the focus was on the new doors, we managed to hang all 64 of them! For the exterior ones, we also attached the "stays" that will stop them blowing about in the wind when open. As well as this, there was more staining inside the shed, and tiding up the fixing to the roof beams in the range itself.

Despite the terrible rain at the start of the week, we have a new roof on the range front, fitted by our brilliant builder Greg Harvey.

Robert has kindly donated a door and some light panels, creating a new 8 metre by 2 metre fully enclosed space (the new 'Sound Box'). Our Chairman wonders if we might now have ourselves a very pretty 8 metre air-pistol range!

Back at the workshops, we have all the panels fully stained, and the 36 top doors glazed with tough Perspex. There are so many items (over 300) that we are using 2 workshops. They will be delivered to the range on Thursday in good time for the fitting operation this weekend. There will be plenty to do for the good volunteer squad!

We might not be at the range today, but work doesnt stop!
Now the frames are in place, production of the doors has started. The plywood is all cut on a CNC router which ensures total accuracy for the 64 doors. Even the hinge pilot holes (all 512 of them!) are automatically drilled. The team are pictured hand finishing the doors and staining them.

Another sucessful day working on the range!
Today we removed the old internal framework, and installed the new frames as we went. Again Tim's measurements were spot on, despite the slight slope in the concrete base that was laid 40 years ago!!
We even managed to get the mock-ups of the doors in exactly the right position, so the final measurements can go to the manufactorer ready for cutting later this week.

Day 1 of Work at the Range:
The day began meeting at Tim's to collect and transport the new frames to the range. When we arrived there was plenty to do....adding 2nd coats to the frames, dismantling the "sound shed" and removing the old insulation, lots of cleaning (including re-locating resident spiders!), and we even managed to get the first frame in place.
Tim was relieved (and the rest of us very impressed) that it fit perfectly! we even had some sample doors to check it all lined up (which of course it did!).
No rest for the wicked, we will be back at it tomorrow - so hope the weather holds!
