Our sports massage therapist, Emily started her journey at Physio Remedies as an athlete being treated for several injuries and following knee and shoulder surgery.

Emily, who is also a swim coach has completed epic cross-continents swims, ultra-runs and even ultra-triathlons! In 2019 she was the seventh female in the world to have finished the gruelling Austria eXtreme Triathlon, one of the world's toughest events with a mammoth 5,800 metres of uphill climbing!

And if that's not impressive enough - she recently completed her MSc Applied Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise. With her own experience and understanding how important it is to maximise power output on a bike, her dissertation project was titled, “Are standard crank lengths too long for cyclists of average female height?”

At the moment, Emily is treating many types of people with sports massage therapy - from desk workers with neck and shoulder pain, to athletes competing in Autumn triathlons.

"Recovering from an injury starts with soft tissue release, mobilisation then strengthening and biomechanics correction," says Emily.

You know that feeling when a big race is coming up and you haven’t managed much training because life (or injury) got in the way? Just remember other things can get you through: teammates, support crew, pacing strategy, nutrition (minimal solids for me), hydration (and electrolytes), pre-empt niggles and blisters, S&C, psychology (having a strategy to get you out of a dark place). Managed 12 hourly laps (78km) of before getting cut off at 1am. All with a longest recent training run of 15km 😅 It was a nice camping weekend away with friends!

Cross over arm pull makes you swim zig zag and you won’t know until someone looks at you from the front!
It feels like you’re doing “streamline” but in the water, you have to compensate body rotation by putting your hands in 10 / 2 o’clock position. Yes, it will feel weird to begin with, but the barrel hugging position will help you engage the lats and swim in a straight line.
