Tonight we welcomed AFC Grove to the rec for our final game of the season.

Took us about 15 minutes to get going against a team that were clearly celebrating the end of the season.

Yan opened the scoring when he capitalised on a deflection from Ellis’ effort on goal. We began dominating possession with Cam 2, Ben and Ellis playing quick flowing football. The back 4 of Sam, Will, Charlie and George protected young Ben in goal and limited them to a few half chances. Speckles put us 2-0 up with a neat finish inside the box which found the far corner. Soon after Alfie made it 3 when he beat his player for pace and confidently found the net. Keeper Ben made a smart save low down, but was forced off with an injured thumb. Ethan put on the gloves and did well to keep a clean sheet to half time by tipping 1 effort onto the crossbar.

Lots of changes at half time to give game time. Zach, Jason, Anthony and Dylan all came on and did very well. We got the 4th when Alfie turned provider for Ethan to slot past the keeper. The same 2 linked up again with the same outcome, Ethan’s pace and cool finish made it 5. Another change of keeper as Ben who had bravely come back on at half time, with his hand strapped couldn’t continue. Cam 2 took over the duties but soon conceded from the spot after a collision to make it 5-1.

Then we were awarded our own spot kick as new left winger Charlie was fouled in the box. Up stepped Cam 2 to calmly slot it to the keepers right to make it 6-1. We conceded another late on but kept going. The move of the match as George picked up the ball in his preferred position of centre back 🤣 evaded numerous challenges and drove a full 40/50 yards before releasing the ball to Charlie, who controlled the ball and swept it into the far corner to seal the 3 points with a 7-2 win.

1st season for the Devs done, and it’s been a total success. 2 cup semi finals, 26 games played, only 1 cancelled due to availability is a credit to the lads that have contributed this season. Lots of youngsters that have taken to men’s football and held their own, along with some older lads that have returned after not playing for a while, or back for only the second season. Brilliant mixture of youth and experience shows the club is moving in the right direction.
MOTM today was Ethan. Went in goal when Ben got injured, then scored 2 great goals to finish the season as top scorer. Worked hard all night, and was a constant threat going forward 🏅💙⚽️
