Well, what a glorious day at the lake — so peaceful you could almost hear the fish laughing at us from underneath the surface. When I wandered round later this afternoon there were just two fishermen there, which is very typical: either the lake is so quiet you start wondering if everyone has been abducted, or there are six of you appearing at once like a fishing flash mob. No in-between, obviously.

Fish were active at the weekend, but seemed quieter during the week, but that is part of the strange magic of the place. One minute it looks like a nature documentary called The Silent Lake, and the next minute someone is pulling something out and everyone suddenly remembers why they came.

I just wanted to say a really big thank you to you all. I genuinely enjoy walking round the lake again, catching up with everyone, and pretending I know exactly what I am doing at all times. It is lovely to see the place being used and looked after, and I really appreciate the friendly chats, the patience, and the general good humour.

If there are any problems, please just let me know. I will be doing the usual toilet cleaning, bin emptying, and grass cutting over the weekend — basically the glamorous celebrity lifestyle I was always destined for.

And to those of you with fishing equipment near the grass: you know who you are. I will do my very best not to attack it with the mower this time. Still very sorry about that — no rods, reels, buckets, chairs, nets, or sandwiches will be harmed intentionally in the maintenance of this lake.

Anyway, thank you again for being such a great bunch. Wishing you all the very best — look after yourselves, enjoy the lake, and may your next catch be large enough to brag about but not so large that nobody believes you.

All quiet at the lake this morning – six anglers enjoying themselves, just how it should be.

A lovely, peaceful start to what promises to be a great day. Thank you all for helping to keep it such a welcoming place.

Subject: Important Reminder – Conduct and Expectations at the Lake

I am genuinely disappointed to have to write this message, as it indicates that something has not gone as it should.

The fishing season at Longwater officially begins on 16th June, although, as is tradition, I open the lake on the Friday beforehand. This means we have only been open for three days, and already today the most important rule of the lake has been broken.

The cardinal rule is simple: anglers must respect one another at all times.

I make every effort to set clear expectations, and I expect all members to follow the rules. This lake is my hobby – something I take great pride in and enjoyment from – and I hope that all members feel the same. It is important to me that we all enjoy the environment together.

I do not want to be placed in a position where I have to act as judge between members or determine who is right or wrong. The rules are there to be followed, and that is what I expect from everyone.

At this early stage of the season, I do not want to be faced with asking individuals to leave or reconsider their membership. However, I must be clear:
• If there is a problem, please contact me directly.
• If I can not resolve it immediately, it may need to wait until I am available.
• Under no circumstances should disagreements escalate into arguments at the lake.

From today onwards, I will be operating a zero-tolerance approach to disputes between members. The expectation is clear – there should be no arguments.

No one is required to be part of the lake, and it is important that everyone present contributes to a positive, respectful atmosphere.

To be absolutely clear:
• The written rules are in place and must be followed.
• Mutual respect between anglers is non-negotiable.

If respectful behaviour and cooperation cannot be maintained, I will have no choice but to ask those involved to leave, in fairness to everyone else.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. I want this to remain an environment where everyone can relax, fish, and enjoy themselves.

Urgent Lake Update

Please be aware that some of the fish on the lake are currently spawning in isolated areas.

The lake remains open at this time, as spawning is not taking place across the whole lake. However, fishing is strictly at anglers’ discretion, and we ask everyone to take fish welfare into consideration before visiting and while fishing.

This appears to be a short-lived spawning event, likely brought on by the recent cold spell followed by the first warm, sunny days.

With the usual English weather forecast to return next week, we expect conditions to settle again soon.

For now, please take this as a heads-up. If you do visit, please avoid any areas where fish are actively spawning and always put fish safety first when angling.

Well, we had the quietest opening day for fishing that I’ve ever known in all the decades I’ve been running it — a massive three members turned up on the first day! Unheard of.

I am wondering whether my increased communications this year may have worked a little too well, especially the reminders that the first day of the fishing season is usually the busiest day and one to avoid if you prefer it quieter. It seems everyone took that advice — apart from the three!

So, just to update everyone: yes, only three members came down on opening day. Thank you to those members who made it along. I’m really sorry if I scared anyone off from coming down on the first day.

Of course, what will probably happen now is that everyone will choose a different day and we’ll end up being busy then — so apologies in advance if that happens!

Just to confirm, we are open, there are fishermen on the lake, and everything is all good. The number of members is exactly the same as it has always been — it was simply a very quiet first day of the season.

It’s always good to set records, although maybe not quite that kind of record!

Thank you everyone, and I look forward to seeing you down at the lake. Look after yourselves.

🎣 Just Two Days to Go! 🎣

The countdown is on—just two days until the start of the new fishing season on the 12th!

There’s plenty of excitement building here on the farm as we put the finishing touches in place. Everything is nearly ready, with just a few final bits of paperwork and work being wrapped up ahead of the big day.

From Friday, we’ll be delighted to welcome all our fishing members back. With your return, the farm and office will quickly come back to life—so please bear with us as things become a little busier than usual.

We’re looking forward to seeing you all back and wish everyone a fantastic start to the season.

Tight lines and see you soon! 🎣
