Lots happening at the club at the moment. The Monday session, which is for the 10 years to senior age bracket, was as busy as ever with a mixture of technical work and randori that took no prisoners - nobody left the mat at the end without a sweaty face (and a few aches). The early Friday sessions are still very busy with 25 to 30 children (5 to 10 year old) on the mat. The second session is seeing a slight decrease as children are revising for important exams but that's to be expected.

Dates for your diary:
In a couple of weeks we have the twinning event where JudoClub Mayennais will be coming to us this year (see previous post). These events are always great fun.

On Saturday 25th July, Will Hickman's "Wiltshire Judo" will be holding a summer training camp. The last training camp, held over the Easter holiday for 40 judoka was sold out, so when this event is officially listed (in a week or so) please don't delay in getting your entries in otherwise you may be disappointed.

We will be at Seend Fete on 8th August 2026, possibly the biggest fete in Wiltshire, doing demonstrations during the day and then a session in the main arena. There's normally 1000+ people at this fete so why not come along and join us? More on this nearer the time.

In September we are planning to enter Devizes Carnival for the first time this decade. Some of you will remember the last time we did it we had the Flintsones theme with lots of fancy dress.

On Sunday 18th October we will be holding our 6th Mini-Mon competition for young judoka aged 8 to 16 years old. This event is entered by a dozen or so clubs from all over the Western Area and elsewhere and is a great entry level competition for all aspiring young judoka.

Fancy getting on the mat with us? Want to try the Olympic combat sport of Judo? Lots of seniors and children to train with. First session is always free and after that we charge just £25 which entitles you to four sessions per month. Train twice a week with us and it's just £30 (8 sessions per month). No contracts, no gimmicks, just the promise that you may ache after a session now and again. Have a look at our website which details everything about the club, who is coaching you or your children, our pricing structure, our history and some of our achievements. PM this page or drop us an email to [email protected] for further details or questions.

Our Judoka friends from JudoClub Mayennais will be joining us on Friday 19th June as we host 10 of them at our homes. On Saturday 20th June (10.30am to 12.30pm) we will have a two hour technical & randori session at the club. We will go through various techniques not only in Judo but also in Aikido. Every club member aged 5 to senior is welcome and encouraged to join in on this session. We will have the full 144m2 mat area out so there will be plenty of space. If anyone from another club would like to get on the mat with us during this free session please drop us a PM or email to [email protected] beforehand just so we can gauge numbers. You are most welcome.

🥋 Peter Murphy 2026 🥋

For the first time since 2018, the Peter Murphy Western Area Closed Competition made its return.

In this event, each competitor represented both their club and their county, with points earned through medals contributing towards the overall county title.

Devizes sent 5 judoka: Stanley, Finn, Dexter, Noah, and Katie. Every judoka fought with grit, determination, and resilience throughout the day.

🏅 Results:

🥉 Finn – Finn earned himself a well-deserved 3rd place, winning his second fight with a huge O-Goshi. On another day, Finn could easily have taken gold in this group, but he was unlucky in both his first and last fights.

🥉 Stanley – Stanley also came home with a 3rd place finish. He showed some fantastic ne-waza, including great escapes and an excellent hold-down in his second fight.

🥉 Dexter – This was Dexter’s first judo event, so it was always going to be an uphill battle. In a group of 7, he had 6 tough fights. Despite being the youngest in the group by quite some way, Dexter showed a fantastic attitude throughout, never giving up and making every contest competitive.

🥈 Katie – Katie had to fight up an age band today as there was nobody available in her own category. She came up against a skilled and experienced competitor but still managed to score in 2 out of her 3 contests.

🥉 Noah – Similar to Katie, Noah was also moved up an age band, where he found himself facing blue and green belts. In his first fight, Noah defeated an experienced competitor, securing the win during golden score. He received several compliments from referees and coaches on how well he handled himself against older, higher-graded, and more experienced opponents.

Overall, it was a fantastic event and a brilliant experience for all our judoka.

A huge thank you to Simon Ward and his team for organising such a great competition.

Just a quick reminder that we are deep cleaning our whole mat area this afternoon which will impact the start of the first session. With this in mind the change in session times is:

1st session - 5 to 10 yr old 6.30pm to 7.30pm

2nd session - 10 to 16 yr old 7.40pm to 9pm

Because there are a lot of bugs and illness around at the moment, if you feel unwell or have a runny nose, please have a night off judo.

Any issues, please PM the page or drop an email to [email protected]

Judoka of the week time! 🏆🏆

In the always busy first session for the 5 to 10 year olds it went to Maddie for putting in 100% effort. Maddie loves her judo and always puts a good shift in, demonstrates some lovely techniques and always listens to her coaches on the mat. Well done, Maddie.

In the equally busy second session for the 10 to 16 year old, we decided to award trophies to two players because they put so much effort in. The trophies went to brothers, Fion and Oran for putting in a huge amount of effort into their techniques and randori. Well done to Fion and Orin.

Monday night saw 24 seniors and juniors on the mat going through some ashi-waza techniques and loads of randori during the two hour long session. Lots of red faces and sweaty foreheads at the end but big smiles, exactly how it should be.
